Book excerpt: Set Me as a Seal Upon Thy Heart: Constructions of Female Sanctity in Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Early Modern Period is a collection of essays focusing on saintly women's representations both in Eastern and Western Christianity starting from Late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages and Early Modernity. The volume discusses two different categories in relation to the conceptualization of female sanctity: the context of their construction in hagiographic sources and the emergent power rendered by their martyrdoms. It offers a transdisciplinary perspective on the present research carried out in the fields of hagiography, history, and art history.

Download or read book I Santi delle Chiese medievali di Roma (IV-XIV secolo) written by Massimo Pautrier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis I quaranta martiri di Sebaste by : San Basilio Magno
Download or read book I quaranta martiri di Sebaste written by San Basilio Magno and published by Le vie della Cristianità. This book was released on 2020-08-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Rome in the Eighth Century by : John Osborne
Download or read book Rome in the Eighth Century written by John Osborne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a critical era in the history of the city of Rome, the eighth century CE. This was the moment when the bishops of Rome assumed political and administrative responsibility for the city's infrastructure and the physical welfare of its inhabitants, in the process creating the papal state that still survives today. John Osborne approaches this using the primary lens of 'material culture' (buildings and their decorations, both surviving and known from documents and/or archaeology), while at the same time incorporating extensive information drawn from written sources. Whereas written texts are comparatively few in number, recent decades have witnessed an explosion in new archaeological discoveries and excavations, and these provide a much fuller picture of cultural life in the city. This methodological approach of using buildings and objects as historical documents is embodied in the phrase 'history in art'.

Book Synopsis Byzantium, Italy and the North by : Anthony Cutler
Download or read book Byzantium, Italy and the North written by Anthony Cutler and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of seventeen papers by Professor Anthony Cutler falls into three broad groups, all including topics with which the author has been concerned for many years. Chapters III-VIII are concerned primarily with Byzantine subjects, and with their historiography. The last of this group also probes Italian relations with Byzantium which, in one manner or another, is also the theme of the next four papers. Chapters XIII-XVI are devoted to Scandinavia without, however, abandoning the focus on interconnections between 'works of art' and the societies that they represented. Over the course of thirty years, the author has reverted frequently to the broad theme of the relation between artefacts and the cultures from which they emerged, prompted to respond to the art historian's characteristic lack of concern with the reasons for (as against the 'sources' of) the objects that he or she studies. These papers are linked by Professor "Cutler's general impatience with an attitude set out long ago by Henry Adams: 'We can admire a cathedral without comprehending the force of the Cross that produced it'.
