Download or read book With Fresh Eyes written by Karen Wingate and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What miracles do we miss when we close our eyes to the wonder of everyday moments? In this busy, jaded world of ours, we often take for granted what we see every day. We may set aside time to spend with God in a quiet room, but we struggle to see his hand in a traffic jam or while walking the dog. But for Karen Wingate, sight itself is something extraordinary, and what our eyes can reveal is even more astounding. Karen lived most of her life with severely limited sight due to a cluster of disorders stemming from a genetic defect. But through the chance outcome of a surgery, she regained sight in one eye that doubled her visual acuity--and allowed her to see things she had never seen before. And as she discovered a more detailed world for the first time, she also began to see God in every new discovery--from the prosaic numbers of a bathroom scale to the glory of sunsets. With Fresh Eyes invites readers to not only celebrate the gift of their own sight but also reawaken the wonder of what they observe in creation--great and small--and how God is working in everyday moments. In each of her sixty meditations, Karen's humor and whimsy draw a connection between physical sight and spiritual understanding that will leave readers with a renewed joy and delight in what is good and beautiful, and will reassure them that God still works in the lives of his people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Illumination Book Awards, Silver Medal: Theology God’s presence is not “out there” but right here. We tend to look for God in dramatic or miraculous moments, but such expectations can blind us to God’s ongoing presence. What if God is already with us, in the life we have this moment? When we experience ordinary but meaningful events, such as our first love or a favorite novel, we are in fact encountering God’s presence. As we learn to notice spiritual movement within and around us, we can recognize the many facets of God’s love that touch us daily. “As a priest and spiritual director of many decades, my driving desire is for people to experience God’s limitless love for them and to recognize it when it emerges in what they consider just ordinary life happenings and conversations.” —William A. Barry, SJ Whether we are in pain or crisis, questioning if we are really worthy of God’s attention, or are simply wondering why God would be in the mundane details of our lives, Experiencing God in the Ordinary can nurture our hope—that God is always present and can be found in an ordinary day. Complete with personal stories and various suggestions for prayer and meditation, this book is perfect for devotional reading, retreat, or small-group discussion.
Book Synopsis How God Becomes Real by : T.M. Luhrmann
Download or read book How God Becomes Real written by T.M. Luhrmann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard work required to make God real, how it changes the people who do it, and why it helps explain the enduring power of faith How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people—as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort—by changing the people who do it and giving them the benefits they seek from invisible others—helps to explain the enduring power of faith. Drawing on ethnographic studies of evangelical Christians, pagans, magicians, Zoroastrians, Black Catholics, Santeria initiates, and newly orthodox Jews, Luhrmann notes that none of these people behave as if gods and spirits are simply there. Rather, these worshippers make strenuous efforts to create a world in which invisible others matter and can become intensely present and real. The faithful accomplish this through detailed stories, absorption, the cultivation of inner senses, belief in a porous mind, strong sensory experiences, prayer, and other practices. Along the way, Luhrmann shows why faith is harder than belief, why prayer is a metacognitive activity like therapy, why becoming religious is like getting engrossed in a book, and much more. A fascinating account of why religious practices are more powerful than religious beliefs, How God Becomes Real suggests that faith is resilient not because it provides intuitions about gods and spirits—but because it changes the faithful in profound ways.
Download or read book See With New Eyes written by Ty Gibson and published by Pacific PressPub Assn. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To see most things, one's eyes need to be open. But not so with God. If you open your eyes too wide or look too closely you're likely to miss Him while thinking you have seen Him. Most of us make this very mistake. We look at people expecting to see God. We look at religions. We even look in the mirror. Inevitably we are disappointed, because we had hoped for a nicer picture of the Divine One. Countless people have turned away from God because they thought they saw Him in a person or in a church ... and, quite frankly, they didn't like what they saw.

Book Synopsis The Beauty of the Lord by : Jonathan King
Download or read book The Beauty of the Lord written by Jonathan King and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is God's beauty often absent from our theology? Rarely do theologians take up the theme of God's beauty—even more rarely do they consider how God's beauty should shape the task of theology itself. But the psalmist says that the heart of the believer's desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord. In The Beauty of the Lord, Jonathan King restores aesthetics as not merely a valid lens for theological reflection, but an essential one. Jesus, our incarnate Redeemer, displays the Triune God's beauty in his actions and person, from creation to final consummation. How can and should theology better reflect this unveiled beauty? The Beauty of the Lord is a renewal of a truly aesthetic theology and a properly theological aesthetics.

Book Synopsis Miracles All Around Us by : Rev. Curtis Shipman
Download or read book Miracles All Around Us written by Rev. Curtis Shipman and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains some of the experiences and lessons I have had over the last 25 years. I have found, as a Christian, I am always learning and the more I learn the more there is to learn. God gave me a gift of not just believing in him, but making sure I know in him. There is neither man nor government that can change my mind about the lord my God. I hope this book will inspire its readers to find their place in God's house, the house not made with man's hands, but the house in heaven. The place prepared for us by Jesus Christ. I also hope that this book will inspire the readers to stand for what is right in God's eyes. Teach others about God's kingdom before it is too late. Find love and forgiveness for all our neighbors, friends and persons that have trespassed against us. For if we do not forgive others there will not be forgiveness for us.
