Book Synopsis Migration and Domestic Work by : Helma Lutz
Download or read book Migration and Domestic Work written by Helma Lutz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic work has become highly relevant on a local and global scale. Until a decade ago, domestic workers were rare in European households; today they can be found working for middle-class families and single people, for double or single parents as well as for the elderly. Performing the three C's - cleaning, caring and cooking - domestic workers offer their woman power on a global market which Europe has become part of. This global market is now considered the largest labour market for women world wide and it has triggered the feminization of migration. This volume brings together contributions by European and US based researchers to look at the connection between migration and domestic work on an empirical and theoretical level. The contributors elaborate on the phenomenon of 'domestic work' in late modern societies by discussing different methodological and theoretical approaches in an interdisciplinary setting. The volume also looks at the gendered aspects of domestic work; it asks why the re-introduction of domestic workers in European households has become so popular and will argue that this phenomenon is challenging gender theories. This is a timely book and will be of interest to academics and students in the fields of migration, gender and European studies.

Book excerpt: Organizadores: Daniel de Mello Ferraz, Ana Paula Martinez Duboc We don’t know what the future holds among so much polarization, hybrid wars, movements to disassemble public education, but the role of a teacher educator who is engaged and aware of its representation in the society cannot be denied and vanished. On the contrary, a teacher educator in the complexity of his/her role will inevitably be reference of resistance: creating discursive and theoretical opportunities, legitimizing knowledge other than those which comes top down. Certainly, this book will trigger other similar projects and contribute meaningfully to critical teacher education (Fabrício Ono). Download or read book Any Way You Slice It written by Stan Cox and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rationing: it’s a word—and idea—that people often loathe and fear. Health care expert Henry Aaron has compared mentioning the possibility of rationing to “shouting an obscenity in church.” Yet societies in fact ration food, water, medical care, and fuel all the time, with those who can pay the most getting the most. As Nobel Prize–winning economist Amartya Sen has said, the results can be “thoroughly unequal and nasty.” In Any Way You Slice It, Stan Cox shows that rationing is not just a quaint practice restricted to World War II memoirs and 1970s gas station lines. Instead, he persuasively argues that rationing is a vital concept for our fragile present, an era of dwindling resources and environmental crises. Any Way You Slice It takes us on a fascinating search for alternative ways of apportioning life’s necessities, from the goal of “fair shares for all” during wartime in the 1940s to present-day water rationing in a Mumbai slum, from the bread shops of Cairo to the struggle for fairness in American medicine and carbon rationing on Norfolk Island in the Pacific. Cox’s question: can we limit consumption while assuring everyone a fair share? The author of Losing Our Cool, the much debated and widely acclaimed examination of air-conditioning’s many impacts, here turns his attention to the politically explosive topic of how we share our planet’s resources.

Download or read book The Servant Problem written by Rosie Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are now more servants in Britain than in Victorian times. This explosion in paid domestic employment is part of a global trend. Women from countries such as the Philippines take on domestic jobs in order to support families at home, whilst students from Eastern Europe, the EU and Brazil work as au pairs in order to study English and improve their employment prospects. Rosie Cox's timely new work examines the reality of paid domestic labour in Britain today and explores the global trends that sustain this growth of domestic employment. She shows how the economy depends on women working outside the home, how it is the employment of domestic workers that helps make this possible and examines the experiences of both employers and employees who have joined this new global labour market.
Book Synopsis Migration, Domestic Work and Affect by : Encarnación Gutiérrez-Rodríguez
Download or read book Migration, Domestic Work and Affect written by Encarnación Gutiérrez-Rodríguez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic and care work in private households is now the largest employment sector for migrant women. This book sheds light on these households through its focus on the interpersonal relationships between Latin American “undocumented migrant” domestic workers and employers in Austria, Germany, Spain and the UK. The personal experiences of these women form the basis for Gutiérrez-Rodríguez’s decolonial analysis of the feminization of labor in private households and cultural analysis of domestic work as affective labor. This book will be a necessary voice in the debates on citizenship, cosmopolitanism, and migrant workers’ rights.
Book Synopsis Masculinities under Neoliberalism by : Andrea Cornwall
Download or read book Masculinities under Neoliberalism written by Andrea Cornwall and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism has had a radical impact on the lived, gendered experiences of people around the world. But while the gendered dimensions of neoliberalism have already received significant scholarly attention, the existing literature has given little consideration to men’s identities and experiences. Building on the work of Cornwall and Lindisfarne’s landmark text Dislocating Masculinity, this collection provides a fresh perspective on gender dynamics under neoliberalism. Bringing together a series of short, readable case studies drawn from new ethnographic fieldwork, its subjects range from the experiences of working-class men in Putin’s Russia to colonial masculinities in Southern Rhodesia, and from young British Muslim men to amateur footballers in Jamaica.
