Book Synopsis Out There Somewhere by : Simon J. Ortiz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He has been out there somewhere for a while now, a poet at large in America. Simon Ortiz, one of our finest living poets, has been a witness, participant, and observer of interactions between the Euro-American cultural world and that of his Native American people for many years. In this collection of haunting new work, he confronts moments and instances of his personal past—and finds redemption in the wellspring of his culture. A writer known for deeply personal poetry, Ortiz has produced perhaps his most personal work to date. In a collage of journal entries, free-verse poems, and renderings of poems in the Acoma language, he draws on life experiences over the past ten years—recalling time spent in academic conferences and writers' colonies, jails and detox centers—to convey something of the personal and cultural history of dislocation. As an American Indian artist living at times on the margins of mainstream culture, Ortiz has much to tell about the trials of alcoholism, poverty, displacement. But in the telling he affirms the strength of Native culture even under the most adverse conditions and confirms the sustaining power of Native beliefs and connections: "With our hands, we know the sacred earth. / With our spirits, we know the sacred sky." Like many of his fellow Native Americans, Ortiz has been "out there somewhere"—Portland and San Francisco, Freiburg, Germany, and Martinique—away from his original homeland, culture, and community. Yet, as these works show, he continues to be absolutely connected socially and culturally to Native identity: "We insist that we as human cultural beings must always have this connection," he writes, "because it is the way we maintain a Native sense of existence." Drawing on this storehouse of places, times, and events, Out There Somewhere is a rich fusion taking readers into the heart and soul of one of today's most exciting and original American poets.

Book excerpt: Amanda is a free spirit who somehow manages to get herself stuck in the energy vibration of a physical body. Of course she did it on purpose; nothing happens by accident. She's a little embarrassed to find herself on earth again and wonders how she ended up here when she vowed she'd never reincarnate again. Her most down-to-earth task is to see through the misty illusions of things for herself and to remember her spiritual nature. In the course of events, she gets sidetracked by what everyone says is real life. But she's not sure what's real anymore. She's been dreaming about rainbows lately, and now she's beginning to wonder if her life is really a dream she's having. Lavender is trying to remember something she's forgotten about her spiritual nature so she registers for school in the universe and begins classes in Time and Space, Energy and Matter, and Reality Awareness. She's a little concerned about the whole idea of synchronicity and the simultaneous time-space concept; she's not sure if she can handle everything at once. Her destiny is to unearth the mysteries of the universe and to rediscover the Scroll of Knowledge she wrote in Egypt. But she's reluctant to remember her experiences as a philosopher and has turned off her spiritual awareness. Rainbow is Amanda's higher self and Lavender's teacher who tries to help them see the light within themselves. But Rainbow is really more than she appears to be at first, or even second, glance.

Download or read book Voices of the Heart written by I. Bernard Brown and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of the heart is a collection of poems and lyrical bits of real life emotions, pains, joys, moments and dreams captured in words. This collection of poetry spans over 45 years. I wrote my first poem as I can recall when I was but a teenager. I, remember seeing some beautiful red birds in the trees, it was a thing of beauty and in those day, I did not have a camera. Through the years as things touched my heart are bothered me I wrote about them. At that time, I only wrote about it so I can remember it and had no inkling of composing a book poetry, but after writing so many poems through the years of my good and bad experiences and now that Im retired and live in the woods by the lake and sits on my porch much of the time it came into my spirit and I decided to clean some of my bits up and put them together for everyone who wish to share them. I call my collection Voices of the Heart. This collection of poems concerns mostly my life for the last 45 years through the joys, pains and strife two marriages, six meaningful relationships, six children, four different women, undergraduate and graduate degrees from two colleges one is south and one in the Midwests and having reside in three states. My life has always been a journey never a destination. I am about 60 now, my thoughts are still beyond the familiar. I often think about getting my doctorate degrees, build a house in the mountains and making more memories. I cherish every fleeting moment and appreciate life like its no tomorrow, every day.
