Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller “We all want to raise children with good values—children who are the opposite of spoiled—yet we often neglect to talk to our children about money. . . . From handling the tooth fairy, to tips on allowance, chores, charity, checking accounts, and part-time jobs, this engaging and important book is a must-read for parents.” — Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project In the spirit of Wendy Mogel’s The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman’s Nurture Shock, New York Times “Your Money” columnist Ron Lieber delivers a taboo-shattering manifesto that explains how talking openly to children about money can help parents raise modest, patient, grounded young adults who are financially wise beyond their years For Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids. Children are hyper-aware of money, and they have scores of questions about its nuances. But when parents shy away from the topic, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model the basic financial behaviors that are increasingly important for young adults but also to imprint lessons about what the family truly values. Written in a warm, accessible voice, grounded in real-world experience and stories from families with a range of incomes, The Opposite of Spoiled is both a practical guidebook and a values-based philosophy. The foundation of the book is a detailed blueprint for the best ways to handle the basics: the tooth fairy, allowance, chores, charity, saving, birthdays, holidays, cell phones, checking accounts, clothing, cars, part-time jobs, and college tuition. It identifies a set of traits and virtues that embody the opposite of spoiled, and shares how to embrace the topic of money to help parents raise kids who are more generous and less materialistic. But The Opposite of Spoiled is also a promise to our kids that we will make them better with money than we are. It is for all of the parents who know that honest conversations about money with their curious children can help them become more patient and prudent, but who don’t know how and when to start.

Book excerpt: December 1941. A Pan American Flying Boat takes off from San Francisco bound for Honolulu. As it approaches Hawaii, it suddenly must divert to an alternate site due to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It eventually reaches New Zealand, but finds itself unable to return the United States mainland due to the presence of the hostile Japanese fleet. To safely return home, it must circumnavigate the globe westward, "The Opposite Way." Thus begins the epic journey for the passengers and crew of the 'Caledonia Clipper' as she travels uncharted waters and visits unfamiliar destinations under the cover of radio silence in an effort to escape the Japanese war machine at the onset of World War II. At home on the mainland, the families and friends must deal with the mysterious disappearance of the ship and the unknown whereabouts of their loved ones as America braces for war. The responsibility of bringing the 'Caledonia' home safely with its human cargo falls on the shoulders of the young and dashing commander of the ship, Captain Eldon Rule. He must act as both supervisor and sparkplug to his travel weary crew of 11. Also on board the luxurious yet claustrophobic confines of the 'Caledonia' are a unique array of passengers. There is an aristocratic steel mill owner with ambitions of joining the Roosevelt Cabinet, traveling with his wife; a reporter on his way to Honolulu to cover the readiness of the U.S. Naval fleet; two USO showgirls with ambitions that also include the crew; a Japanese-American businessman whom the passengers are wary of; an ill-fated War Department attache'; two United States Senators, one a southern bigot and the other the estranged father of Captain Rule; and a strapping New Zealander who may be the guiding light for the ship. Rob Carpentier It was on a trip to the National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC where I discovered my hidden fascination with air travel in the 1930's and 40's. Walking through a mock-up of an antiquated DC-4 inspired me to write about it. The opulent world of a Pan American Flying Boat was the perfect scenario. When I saw a cutaway drawing of the ship from a coffee table book, I could see the characters mingling inside and I had the setting. As an enthusiast and student of World War II, it seemed natural to interweave the ship and its complement against the backdrop of the war. Add the situations that were occurring on the mainland home front, and I had a story of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. Rob Carpentier works for a prominent northern New Jersey newspaper and lives in Clifton, N.J. with his family. His interests include history, reading, and comedy. He wants his next book to be an auto-biographical comedy, and also hopes to audition for "The Last Comic Standing" next year.

The traces from her body were gone, the ones that said his name, but she had an extra skin of ice that protected her and she looked perfect, like Snow White.' Ruby and her older sister, Jinn, are on their own, just about making ends meet. Jinn is beautiful, with glittering blonde hair, and makes it her business to look after Ruby. They are horrified by, but try to ignore, the local newspaper stories of prostitutes who are murdered, their bodies eventually discovered underwater. Then the no-good Nathan Baird turns up on the scene - again - and Jinn starts to change and no longer has time to look after Ruby. And it seems to Ruby that Jinn herself needs looking after. Her beautiful glittering hair starts to lose its shine. And then Jinn disappears. A deeply moving, chilling, and incredibly powerful thriller that celebrates the love two sisters have for each other and mourns the events beyond their control that will conspire to drive them apart.

McManus, New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying There's no hiding on a cruise ship--not even from yourself. Natalie's parents are taking her and her three best friends on a cruise for her seventeenth birthday. A sail-a-bration, they call it. But it's only been a few short months since Natalie's boyfriend died in a tragic accident, and she wants to be anywhere but here. Then she meets a guy on the first night and sparks fly. After a moonlit conversation on a secluded deck of the ship, Natalie pops down to her cabin to get her swimsuit so they can go for a dip. But when she returns, he's gone. Something he said makes her think he might have . . . jumped? No, he couldn't have. But why do her friends think she's crazy for wanting to make sure he's okay? Also, why do they seem to be hiding something from her? And how can she find him when she doesn't even know his name? Most importantly, why is the captain on the intercom announcing the urgent need for a headcount? With her signature thrilling storytelling, the author of The Leaving and The Possible explores our vulnerability to the power of suggestion--and the lies we tell others and ourselves--in a twisting, Hitchcock-inspired mystery with high stakes and dark secrets.

Book excerpt: Lissa Wilson has seen more than enough death in her family, so when people start being savagely killed whenever she has a night out in Melbourne, she's determined to investigate and to make the killing stop. Even when she realises the murders must be the work of a vampire. She reluctantly teams up with the painfully-awkward suburban vampire, Gary, who has been instructed by Melbourne's vampires to find out who's making existence so difficult for the undead community. But in getting to the undead heart of the matter, Lissa and Gary face more challenges than Gary's appalling fashion sense. Particularly when the idea of living forever can be a big temptation for someone who has lost so much. 'A well-made plot with a killer (literally) ending.' - Kerry Greenwood 'It's certainly a most unusual vampire novel. Lissa Wilson is a wonderful character; not because she's an heroic supergirl, but because she rings true. If you can get this book, do.' - Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood novels.

Unleash the wild woman…? Ex-cop Ryan O'Hare takes one look at buttoned-up control freak Liz Garner and just itches to loosen the woman up. Not that he’s into her. Because a woman like that comes with way too many expectations. Not to mention, she practically works for him, and he didn’t hire Liz to watch after his beloved Harley-stealing Gran so he could turn Liz loose in his bed. Still, there’s something about her, a hidden wild side, that makes him wonder what it would take. Liz must be crazy to work for the insensitive, arrogant, horribly…hot man she's avoided for years. Unfortunately, she needs the money and Ryan's grandmother needs a keeper. (Midnight tango lessons and ziplines with Gran, anyone?) Ryan's rare smile and swaggering confidence have Liz torn between throwing her favorite pinot grigio at his head or throwing herself at him. Can this control freak find a way to let loose with the tough, no-strings guy who once broke her heart? This feel-good romance stands alone with a swoonworthy happy-ever-after! No cliffhangers.
