Book Synopsis The Other End of the Leash by : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer for Hire Veronica Blackstone's latest client is writing a memoir with a shocking twist ending, until she's found dead before finishing it. Can Veronica unravel the clues within the memoir to discover the killer? As a writer for hire, Veronica Blackstone puts her keyboard to use to help others. That includes writing advertising copy for local businesses or love letters for those with romantic troubles, or helping people publish their memoirs. Maeve Winslow needs the latter. Maeve is the wife of a famous artist nominated for a prestigious award, and the memoir is to be released ahead of the ceremony. All of Maeve's notes are given to Veronica but for the final few pages. There's a huge surprise within those last pages, but Maeve won't reveal it yet. When Maeve is found dead at the foot of her stairs it looks like an accident, but Veronica isn't convinced. Was the scene staged? Was Maeve murdered to keep her silent? Could clues to the surprise, and the identity of the murderer, be hidden within the notes? It's up to Veronica to figure it out and write the real story.
Book Synopsis In the Light of Darkness by : Butchie
Download or read book In the Light of Darkness written by Butchie and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book/journal, which is entitled In the Light of Darkness, is based on the author’s personal journey through deep depression, darkness, despair, hopelessness, suicide and back because of a lifetime of bipolar depression and eighteen years of sibling violence (domestic violence) in his home. Along with the bipolar depression, because of the abuse, he was also diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Oftentimes, there is a direct correlation between the two, mirror images of each other. Both of these social stigmas are largely overlooked—and this book was written to bring about and raise awareness concerning these toxic taboos, which have been hush-hush and swept under the rug of our social consciousness for far too long. You may not always see the bruises or signs of deep, dark depression, but look closer, listen, and talk to people who are suffering. Show them you truly care and love them and that you are there for them no matter what they are going through because they matter. Let’s stop the madness. Tell someone and/or seek professional help. This book is Wade Robinson’s story and is an intriguing, in-depth, dark journey through life and death.

Book Synopsis Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape by : Peter Jackson
Download or read book Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape written by Peter Jackson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-01-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape is an exceptional story. Peter Jackson was young and recently married when he was drafted into the army at the start of World War II. He had no wish to be there but like most of his generation he was given no choice. Peter arrived in Singapore just as the city was being evacuated and within days he was a prisoner of the Imperial Japanese Army. Peter was one of the very few to survive the hardship, illnesses and brutality that followed. Like so many he was forced to work for the Japanese, first in Singapore and then on the infamous Thai-Burma railway. While there, remarkably, he escaped with seven other soldiers and, when recaptured, he was treated harshly. His memoir brings alive the characters of his comrades and also of the Japanese who he encountered. Some of the Japanese treated their prisoners humanely and Peter was able to form a relationship with them but others were sadistic psychopaths. But throughout his memoir there is a sense of hopefulness that, as young men, they would survive and get back to their homes; this was despite the despair many of them felt at losing four years of their lives as prisoners.

Using writing that ensnares one with its lively candor and its unrestrained intimacy, veteran writer and broadcast journalist Pat Krause draws her readers into a journey that few would choose but even fewer will escape - the experience of living through the illness and eventual death of her lifelong partner. Around the details of their common front in the daily battle with disease, Pat arranges her recollections of their life together - their family, their travels, their many friends, and the love that endured through it all. One such memory is of the life and death of her famous father, Dr. Allan Blair, a pioneer in cancer research. The result of it all is a powerful love story which reveals a great sense of loss for which readers will feel empathy. The manuscript of Acts of Love was the winner of the John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Award, while several of its individual pieces were also award winners

Book excerpt: Brenna There are some people in life who know exactly how to push your buttons. For me, it’s Rye Peterson. We can’t spend more than ten minutes together before we’re at each other’s throats, which makes working together that much harder. Rye is the bassist for Kill John, the biggest rock band in the world, and I am his publicist. It doesn’t help that the man is gorgeous, funny, talented, and…never takes anything seriously. Avoidance is key. But everything changes when he overhears something he shouldn’t: a confession made in a moment of weakness. Now the man I’ve tried so hard to ignore is offering me the greatest temptation of all—him. Rye Brenna James is the one. The one I can’t have. The one I can’t get out of my mind. Believe me, I’ve tried; the woman loathes me. I managed well enough—until I heard her say she’s as lonely as I am. That she needed to be touched, held, satisfied. And I could no longer deny the truth: I wanted to be the one to give her what she craved. I convinced her that it would just be sex, mutual satisfaction with nothing deeper. But the moment I have her, she becomes my world. I’ve never given her a good reason to trust me before. Now, I’ve got to show Brenna that we’re so much better together than we ever were apart. Things are going to get messy. But getting messy with Brenna is what I do best.
