This is the beginning of the introduction: The old man and green lady pulled themselves forward like they'd been shrunk by a magician and forced to sit guests at a slug banquet. Come on, the green lady said and patted the old man's hand. He groaned when they turned. The lady smiled for him. He stared down the same hallway they'd paced for hours. One last time, she thought. The old man stopped at a counter behind the lady where her menthol cigarettes were kept. She couldn't have them, someone had said. Not one? she said. The green lady told herself she wouldn't count her steps anymore. She took the medicine that would keep her awake and started to walk away. You know what, she told the people who gave her the medicine, I'd rather not have anything at all. You can do that, the people said. We can't make you take it. They turned away from her. No, the woman said, I am going to take it. Don't you know that I'm the one who's paying for this? That's right, I thought as I watched. They're all sins....
