Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1983, arguably the coldest year of the decades-long Cold War, the world's greatest superpower invaded Grenada, a Marxist-led Caribbean nation the size of Atlanta. Why and how this unlikely one-week war was waged was shrouded in secrecy at the time--and has remained so ever since. This book is an overdue reconsideration of Operation Urgent Fury, based on historical evidence that only recently has been revealed in declassified documents, oral history interviews and memoir accounts. This chronological narrative emphasizes the human dimension of a sudden crisis now regarded as the greatest foreign policy challenge of President Ronald Reagan's first term. Because the American intervention was hastily drafted, many snafus and accidents marked the chaotic initial days of the operation. Inevitably it fell to individual soldiers, aviators and sailors to perform heroic acts to make up for faulty intelligence, inadequate communication or poor coordination. This work recounts their inspiring, underreported stories in filling out a more complete portrait of Operation Urgent Fury. The final chapter recounts the invasion's aftereffects, especially the unexpected role it played in Congressional reform of the military for future combat in the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role did drug abuse play in John F. Kennedy's White House, and how was it kept from the public? How did general anesthetics and aging affect the presidency of Ronald Reagan? Why did Winston Churchill become more egocentric, Woodrow Wilson more self- righteous, and Josef Stalin more paranoid as they aged -- and how did those qualities alter the course of history? Was Napoleon poisoned with arsenic or did underlying disease account for his decline at the peak of his power? Does syphilis really explain Henry VIII's midlife transformation? Was there more than messianism brewing in the brains of some zealots of the past, among them Adolf Hitler, Joan of Arc, and John Brown? Most important of all, when does one man's illness cause millions to suffer, and when is it merely a footnote to history? To answer such questions requires the clinical intuition of a practicing physician and the scholarly perspective of a trained historian. Bert Park, who qualifies on both counts, offers here fascinating second opinions, basing his retrospective diagnoses on a wide range of sources from medicine and history. Few books so graphically portray the impact on history of physiologically compromised leadership, misdiagnosis, and inappropriate medical treatment. Park not only untangles medical mysteries from the past but also offers timely suggestions for dealing with such problems in the future. As a welcome sequel to his first work, The Impact of Illness on World Leaders, this book offers scholars, physicians, and general readers an entertaining, albeit sobering, analysis.

Book excerpt: This is an extraordinary work which covers both the author's life and the political history of the tiny island of Grenada in the Eastern Caribbean, from the 1951 uprising to the March 13, 1979 triumph of the Grenada Revolution. Starting at the age of six-and-a-half, the author witnesses a number of life-forming events, beginning with Grenada's violent revolutionary upheaval in 1951. This book brings to life the battles between Grenada's agricultural workers and very small farmers on one side, and the planter class and British colonial authorities on the other. The author describes, from personal observation as a young child, the many mass demonstrations and candle light processions of the workers while on general strike; each event unfolding in the tense atmosphere of the presence of hundreds of heavily armed British troops, and police from neighbouring islands brought in by the colonial authorities. The declared decision of the mass-uprising's leader to walk on sea water to attend a huge mass meeting on Grenada's Carenage at the height of the uprising is graphically described, as are the reactions of his supporters and detractors. This book also traces the evolution of the close personal and political friendship, begun at age 12, between Maurice Bishop (Grenada's Prime Minister 1979-'83) and the author, Bernard Coard (Grenada's Deputy Prime Minister during that same period). Their friendship deepens during their university years in the USA and Britain in the 1960s. Their experience of racism, exposure to the US civil rights struggles, the Vietnam War protests, the emergence of "Black Power," and the African decolonization struggle, help shape their ideological outlook, and the methods of political struggle that they and the other future leaders of Grenada would employ on returning to Grenada.Skyred describes the excitement, difficulties, and danger as the newly returned political leaders challenge the brutality and corruption set in motion by the very one who had led the 1951 workers' uprising. Maurice and Bernard's partnership of two decades would be a decisive element in the 1979 armed, mass-participatory overthrow of the Eric Gairy regime, and the establishment of the People's Revolutionary Government of Grenada. The day of the overthrow of the Eric Gairy government, March 13, 1979, is captured in vivid detail, as are the seeds of the political mistakes which would, less than five years later, lead to tragedy and disaster on an unprecedented scale.

Book excerpt: St. Clair lies in a narrow valley rich with anthracite resources. The town was born around 1831, during the great hard coal boom in northeast Pennsylvania. Over the years the town expanded to surrounding areas or patches known as Arnouts Addition, Wadesville, Dark Water, New Castle, Mount Laffee, Crow Hollow, Ravensdale, Lorraine, Diener's Hill, East Mines, and Mill Creek. People came from these areas to work in the mines, railroads, and supporting industries. As the demand for coal increased, the town grew to a high point of 7,000 residents. The decline of the coal industry also brought the decline of the railroads, and the population of St. Clair fell. The photographs in Around St. Clair show the fortitude of its people; the notable residents who have gained national acclaim for their achievements in the labor movement, medical field, and professional sports; and the diverse cultures that make up the town.

Many proposed applications of gene drive research aim to solve environmental and public health challenges, including the reduction of poverty and the burden of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue, which disproportionately impact low and middle income countries. However, due to their intrinsic qualities of rapid spread and irreversibility, gene drive systems raise many questions with respect to their safety relative to public and environmental health. Because gene drive systems are designed to alter the environments we share in ways that will be hard to anticipate and impossible to completely roll back, questions about the ethics surrounding use of this research are complex and will require very careful exploration. Gene Drives on the Horizon outlines the state of knowledge relative to the science, ethics, public engagement, and risk assessment as they pertain to research directions of gene drive systems and governance of the research process. This report offers principles for responsible practices of gene drive research and related applications for use by investigators, their institutions, the research funders, and regulators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever looked up at the sky and seen a huge object coming towards you which you could not identify? Have you ever wondered what would happen if your country could import or export nothing at all? Have you experienced what it is like to have a loved one leave home and never come back? Have you ever waited months on end for a boat arrive that never does? For 60 years to pass and so many questions still left unanswered? Located in the Caribbean, one would think that Grenada was geographically distant from the chaos that was World War II. But the war not only significantly altered the daily lives of hundreds of Grenadians, but also influenced the culture of the Spice Isle as we know it today. With Grenada being a British colony at the time, many Grenadians went off to fight in the war, with relatives never knowing if they would ever see them again. The greatest tragedies during the war, however, happened close to home. On what turned out to be a baneful day - August 5th, 1944 - two boats left on an excursion from Grenada to St. Vincent. Only one, the Providence Mark arrived at its destination. The Island Queen disappeared with 67 passengers and crew and over 60 years later, there are still no answers to comfort those who lost relatives on that unlucky boat. The tragedy is still remembered although with the passage of time it is almost a completely new generation who recall this event, and who are morn. In 'Grenada in Wartime', each page is a learning experience, and as a reader you will get the chance to witness the reality of the island during the war, as well as how its people dealt, and continue to deal, with the ominous disappearance of the Island Queen. Steele's readers are given the opportunity to take a step through Grenada in the mid-1940s. Look into the minds of a child terrified by the sounds of war planes overhead, mothers and fathers doing their best to protect their families from the privations and horrors of the war, or the fathers and mothers who lost each other or vibrant youngsters with the mysterious disappearance of the Island Queen. Beverley A. Steele's Grenada in Wartime tells the collective story of what happened to the people of Grenada during World War II- their tragedies and remarkably resilient nature - in one steady breath. Steele acts as the voice of Grenada's population as she records the experiences of Grenada during World War II - the sacrifices, the hardships, the strength, the compassion, the innovations, and the Grenadian strength of will to keep on going. Grenada in Wartime also documents an admirable response to national tragedy. No one can ignore the disasters and hard times in their history, but they can keep them close to their hearts while they continue to do what they have to do to keep the society moving forward.

Book excerpt: Depicting the full spectrum of adolescent alienation, this engaging, coming-of-age narrative is a humorous blend of novel and memoir. A sensitive, quick-witted boy from a small town, Jack Muir adores his mother, yearns for affection from his father, and lives in the shadow of his accomplished brother. Sent to a boarding school at a young age, Jack must quickly decide what sort of person he will be—the type that succumbs to the pressure of bullies and the school system or the type that fights back, using clever banter and intellect to get by. With a unique and authentic voice, this darkly humorous tale portrays the road to depression as seen through the naiveté of youth.

What this volume reminds us, however, is that those laws are only as good as the personal "sea of ethics" in which each of us operates. THE ETHICS OF PROPERTY INVOLVEMENTS Stephen E. Roulac The Roulac Group San Rafael, California and Visiting Professor University of Ulster Ethical considerations are a dominant theme in the management literature. As "Ethics and ethical issues surround our liver, ... ethics has become one of the most rapidly growing areas of management research, with over 800 articles and 1,400 books appearing since 1990" (Schminke, Ambrose, and Miles, 1998). Compared to business and business management, however, the research and writing on real estate in an ethics context is in the very early stages of development. The lack of a developed literature on ethics in real estate is reflected in the response by one highly placed executive to my solicitation for funding to support the publication of this volume: "I didn't know there were any ethics in real estate!" Fortunately, the Summa Corporation and the Amer ican Real Estate Society believe in the importance of ethics in real estate, for their cosponsorship has made possible this special monograph on the subject of Ethics in Real Estate. The support of the Summa Corporation and the American Real Estate Society of this pioneering volume is warmly and appreciatively acknowledged.

Book excerpt: It's 1972. When hot-headed, impetuous Jack Muir gets off the ship in Durban, he fails to get back on. Instead, he sails into misadventure, fleeing the stifling town of Genoralup to try to lose himself in South Africa at the height of apartheid. But the past has a way of catching up with you, and soon Jack is running again, this time to a kibbutz in Israel. In the course of a lifetime, Jack will travel far, always caught between fleeing from and seeking those things he needs: a mother's precious gift, a lover in a time of war, the loss of a child, a kind and steady woman. And, across time and across continents, old Jack Muir will remember those who helped him become a decent man, a better father and a friend.
