Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, In Search of the Irish Wolfhound, takes a real in-depth look into the history and origins of the Irish wolfhound. Owen Dickey details his research into the origins of one of his favourite dog breeds and recounts stories of its loyalty, courage, and devotion. He answers the common questions and misconceptions related to the breed and whether the modern dog is the original breed revived or a more modern creation. The book features chapters which focus on the myths and legends and a description of the most important personages associated with the wolfdog from the third century to the nineteenth. Owen furthers his research, using only contemporary sources, both literary and artistic, to answer what the Irish wolfdog looked like in the past. Dickey leaves no stone unturned in In Search of the Irish Wolfhound. He takes a closer look into the legendary ancestors of the Irish wolfhound, one of the most famous dog breeds of the Middle Ages, and their equally legendary reputation as guard and hunting dogs.

Book excerpt: In a volume that has become a standard text in Irish studies and serves as a course-friendly alternative to the Field Day anthology, editors Maureen O’Rourke Murphy and James MacKillop survey thirteen centuries of Irish literature, including Old Irish epic and lyric poetry, Irish folksongs, and drama. For each author the editors provide a biographical sketch, a brief discussion of how his or her selections relate to a larger body of work, and a selected bibliography. In addition, this new volume includes a larger sampling of women writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of the ascendancy novel from Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent (I800) through contemporary reinventions of the form. Kreilkamp argues that Irish fiction needs to be rescued from the critical assumptions underlying attacks on the historical mythologies of Yeats and the Literary Revival. Exploring the uniquely Irish dimensions of colonial and post-colonial societies, Kreilkamp charts the self-critical formulations of a gentry culture facing its extinction—more often and more successfully with comic irony than nostalgia. Kreilkamp positions the Big House novels within current debates in postcolonial criticism and theory. She argues that these fictional representations of a beleaguered society provide a complex, nuanced gaze into a hybrid colonial group that distanced itself from the self-aggrandizements of the revivalists. As she examines the gothic, revisionist, and postmodern permutations of an enduring national form, she illustrates the ways ascendancy women transformed conventions of an English domestic genre into political fiction. Her attention to Edgeworth's Irish works, the fiction of the neglected Victorian novelist Charles Lever, and the gothic forms of the Big House by Sheridan Le Fanu and Charles Maturin provide a historical context for later reformulations of the genre by Somerville and Ross, Elizabeth Bowen, Molly Keane, William Trevor, Jennifer Johnston, Aidan Higgins, and John Banville.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DISCOVER THE TRUTH BEHIND THE HEADLINES, THE REVELATORY ROYAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR From the Sunday Times bestselling author and Royal correspondent, Robert Jobson - with his extensive connections within the royal household - this revelatory new biography tells the full story of how Catherine, the Princess of Wales, became the woman she is today. Kate Middleton's life's story seems like a modern-day fairy-tale. An attractive, clever, and ambitious girl from unexceptional beginnings meets and falls in love with a wealthy prince destined to be King when they are both university undergraduates. Now, with the British monarchy in transition, Catherine is Princess of Wales and is set to become Queen. Since her wedding on 29 April 2011, Catherine has endeared herself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth and worldwide on her extensive travels, with her infectious smile, sense of style and down-to-earth nature. Her self-deprecation, willingness to laugh at herself, solid work-ethic - along with her husband, William, warmth, and accessibility - this royal family's dynamic duo have become the most popular members of the Royal Family. But it's not come without its fair share of commentary and scandal, particularly with recent revelations on the relationship of the 'Fab Four' with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as her own health scares. As interest in the royals continues to gain legions of new, younger fans, there is increasing interest in their histories and back stories of the principal players in this story. This book aims to discover, through talking to close sources both on and off the record within the royal household, what has made Catherine the woman she is today.

Book excerpt: The extraordinary life of Australia's first international racehorse, from creating new records in Australia to his life in California, where he won the Hollywood Gold Cup In wartime Sydney, a small and weedy racehorse kicked his way through the top tier of Australian racing. He was Shannon, one of the fastest horses the nation had ever seen. Between 1943 and 1947, Shannon broke record after record with his garrulous jockey Darby Munro. When they sensationally lost the Epsom Handicap by six inches, they forever were stamped by the race they didn't win. Sold in August 1947 for the highest price ever paid at auction for an Australian thoroughbred, Shannon ended up in America. Through headline-snatching pedigree flaws, acclimatization, and countless hardships, he blitzed across the ritzy, glitzy racetracks of 1948 California. Smashing track records, world records, and records set by Seabiscuit, the Australian bolted into world fame with speed and courage that defied all odds. Long before Black Caviar, So You Think, and Takeover Target, Shannon was Australia's first international racehorse. Starring Hall of Fame trainers and jockeys, Hollywood lawyers, and legends Bernborough and Citation, this is his tremendous story.
