Book excerpt: Who would want to kill a beautiful young German model? When her body is found washed up in a harbour near Eastbourne, England, two characters tasked with solving the murder clash as they work together. One is Inspector Carpenter, an Englishman who is outwardly cool but full of self-doubt. The second is straight off the weekly extradition plane from Poland Lieutenant (soon to become DS) Kaminska, a very religious but efficient policewoman. Carpenter cant even guess the right drinks to order in social situations, but he can listen, tell a lie from the truth, and plod through the leads until he hits the right one. Kaminska is fluent in several languages, but her English isnt that good. Like most continental police, she can use a gun. It is a clash of cultures and personalities. By chance, Carpenters laptop is stolen, but in an odd way this helps with solving the murder. Carpenter and Kaminska crash through the Kent countryside and London, trying to get a working relationship together. They follow leads that take them to the island of Sark. They concentrate on the forensic information given by a flash mobile phone. The story climaxes at Eastbourne, where Serena Williams is making her comeback. Carpenter and Kaminska corner the hit man but will they be able to catch them alive? www.rialtotriology.com

Book excerpt: "From one of Fine Homebuilding's best-loved authors, Larry Haun, comes a unique story that looks at American home building from the perspective of twelve houses he has known intimately. Part memoir, part cultural history, A Carpenter's Life as Told by Houses takes the reader house by house over an arc of 100 years. Along with period photos, the author shows us the sod house in Nebraska where his mother was born, the frame house of his childhood, the production houses he built in the San Fernando Valley, and the Habitat for Humanity homes he devotes his time to now. It's an engaging read written by a veteran builder with a thoughtful awareness of what was intrinsic to home building in the past and the many ways it has evolved. Builders and history lovers will appreciate his deep connection to the natural world, yearning for simplicity, respect for humanity, and evocative notion of what we mean by "home.""--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He thought Christianity was a sham. Then it changed his life. Skeptic Josh McDowell thought Christians were out of their minds. He ridiculed and insulted them, then decided to combat them with his own thorough research to disprove the claims of Jesus Christ. To his surprise, he discovered that the evidence suggested exactly the opposite--that Jesus, instead of being simply a first-century Hebrew carpenter, truly was the God he claimed to be. Josh went on to write the inspirational work on Christian apologetics, More Than a Carpenter, which has sold over 15 million copies. In this revised and updated edition, with over 15 million copies in print since its original publication, More Than a Carpenter has changed countless lives. Now, in this revised and updated edition, Josh is joined by his son, Sean, as they tackle the questions that today's generation continues to ask: "Can I be spiritual without believing in God?" "How can I make sure that my life counts for something?" "Is it really possible to know anything for sure about God or Jesus?" This edition is an accessible read for seekers and a great evangelism tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vengeful scientist uses his brilliant discovery to unleash terror on the world in this timeless science fiction classic from an early-twentieth-century master The scientific community has always shunned William Carpenter. A strange, hulking giant, a talented biochemical investigator, and the self-styled “greatest mind in the western world,” he has locked himself inside a house with no windows, in the most desolate reaches of New Jersey, where he can conduct his experiments in peace and isolation. Here in his personal sanctuary, Carpenter has found something astonishing that could alter life on Earth as we know it: a chemical compound that can render all matter invisible, from rocks to plants to people. But the twisted genius has no intention of using this breakthrough to benefit the planet. Instead, he is about to declare war on all humankind by launching an unseen campaign of terror and destruction. For years the world has ignored William Carpenter, labeling him insane, sociopathic, or worst of all, insignificant. And now the world will have to pay. The early works of novelist, editor, short story writer, essayist, and screenwriter Philip Wylie were primary influences on the creation of characters like Flash Gordon, Superman, and Travis McGee. First published in 1931, The Murderer Invisible takes H. G. Wells’s classic Invisible Man several giant leaps further, resulting in a chilling tale of madness and science run amok that is at once a gripping adventure and a prescient commentary on man and society.

Download or read book Caffeinated written by Murray Carpenter and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You’ll never think the same way about your morning cup of coffee.”—Mark McClusky, editor in chief of Wired.com and author of Faster, Higher, Stronger Journalist Murray Carpenter has been under the influence of a drug for nearly three decades. And he’s in good company, because chances are you’re hooked, too. Humans have used caffeine for thousands of years. A bitter white powder in its most essential form, a tablespoon of it would kill even the most habituated user. This addictive, largely unregulated substance is everywhere—in places you’d expect (like coffee and chocolate) and places you wouldn’t (like chewing gum and fruit juice), and Carpenter reveals its impact on soldiers, athletes, and even children. It can make you stronger, faster, and more alert, but it’s not perfect, and its role in health concerns like obesity and anxiety will surprise you. Making stops at the coffee farms of central Guatemala, a synthetic caffeine factory in China, and an energy shot bottler in New Jersey, among numerous other locales around the globe, Caffeinated exposes the high-stakes but murky world of caffeine, drawing on cutting-edge science and larger-than-life characters to offer an unprecedented understanding of America’s favorite drug.
