Book excerpt: Jonathan TomesaEUR(tm) imaginatively created tale of the lives of Joseph and Mary from the biblical account in the gospels is very insightful. The narrative holds the reader in suspense from the first chapter to the end of the book. The intellectual structure is also a unique takeaway of the story of Joseph and Mary. aEUR"Jack Walter Pastor of Connections and Family Care, World Revival Church, Kansas City, MO A papyrus begins with YosefaEUR(tm)s early life. Yosef tells what it was like to be notified that, as an elderly widower, he must go to Jerusalem where he may be selected to marry a young temple virgin. Not thrilled when chosen, but being unwilling to gainsay YahwehaEUR(tm)s will, he takes her home. He recounts how he felt when he discovered her pregnancy, his disbelief of how she became pregnant, his fear that if he divorces her, she may be stoned, and his acceptance of the LordaEUR(tm)s will. They travel to Bethlehem. Yosef recounts the birth, the appearance of the shepherds, the Magi, and his reaction to learning that they must flee HerodaEUR(tm)s murder of the firstborn males. He recounts the trip to Egypt, their stay there, and the return home. He recounts his JesusaEUR(tm)s youth from the circumcision, through the presentation in the temple, to Jesus being missing and the desperate search for him before finding him teaching the temple priests, to his leaving for the wilderness. He accompanies Jesus on his ministries and learns of his miracles. Too old and infirm to travel, Jesus comforts Yosef on his deathbed. The holy family celebrates seder before YosefaEUR(tm)s peaceful death. Jonathan P. Book excerpt: Based on diligent research, the seven scenes of this nativity play present a realistic, biblically evidenced and coherent but persistently denied reading of Jesus' coming into this world. His end as a victim of Roman soldiers in touching psycho-logics corresponds with his start in the womb of a young rural worker victimized by Roman soldiers. Far from blasphemy but full of sympathy with both victims, these scenes show that, in the wording of Brazilian Rabbi Nilton Bonder, "not force and virility but ... the woman builds the path of humanity" and that, in the words of Catholic US-theologist Jane Schaberg, the repressed tradition of Jesus' illegitimous birth "unmasked ... presents us with fuller human realities and therefore with deeper theological potential."

But many Catholics don't realize that married couples are called to holiness as well. Fr. Holböck's tells the inspiring stories of over 200 married saints and blesseds from the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph to Margaret of Scotland, King Louis of France, Thomas More, and modern examples like Gianna Molla and Louis and Zélie Martin, parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The example of these holy men and women is essential to living a truly Catholic married life. Important Church documents and scripture passages are also included to further guide and enlighten the reader. Many illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roman times, the historic records say the world's most beautiful city was Jerusalem. Amid the city, the Temple shone out in gold and white stone. About a million man-years were involved in its ingenious structure. It astounded the world. To the north lay the fortress city of Antonia, connected by a causeway. Another causeway crossed the ravine of the Kidron to the Mount of Olives. Worldwide the exiled tribes of Israel supplied vast quantities of gold and treasures. Millions came to worship. James the brother of Jesus had a throne inside the Temple. He prayed in the Holy Place. He followed in the steps of his father Joseph. Jesus had a far higher office than either. It is described both in the New Testament and early writers of the first centuries. The facts of the resurrection were so clear that Roman emperor Tiberius immediately proclaimed Jesus a God. Others like Caligula tried to destroy the Temple and Jerusalem. Rome also tried to destroy the real facts about Jesus, James and Joseph in the Temple.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A lucid, intelligent page-turner” (Los Angeles Times) that challenges long-held assumptions about Jesus, from the host of Believer Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the “Kingdom of God.” The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his death, his followers would call him God. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most enigmatic figures by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived. Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction. He explores the reasons the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus’ life and mission. Praise for Zealot “Riveting . . . Aslan synthesizes Scripture and scholarship to create an original account.”—The New Yorker “Fascinatingly and convincingly drawn . . . Aslan may come as close as one can to respecting those who revere Jesus as the peace-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, true son of God depicted in modern Christianity, even as he knocks down that image.”—The Seattle Times “[Aslan’s] literary talent is as essential to the effect of Zealot as are his scholarly and journalistic chops. . . . A vivid, persuasive portrait.”—Salon “This tough-minded, deeply political book does full justice to the real Jesus, and honors him in the process.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A special and revealing work, one that believer and skeptic alike will find surprising, engaging, and original.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power “Compulsively readable . . . This superb work is highly recommended.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Book excerpt: "In the coming Crisis, that should begin sometime between now and the end of 2017, most people will be stunned by their losses; many will be utterly destroyed; but a few, a fortunate few, will pay attention to what "The Prosperity Clock" is now indicating and will join with me to not only survive in the difficult days ahead...but PROSPER!" Those are the words of Joseph S. Holleman, author of "The Prosperity Clock" book series. He goes on to say that: "The storm clouds gathering overhead now are unmistakable. There is no doubt in my mind, particularly after witnessing in real time how the Prosperity Clock model perfectly timed the 2007 market panic and recession, that the gale force winds of this next major Crisis period are about to hit us. In the "Prosperity Clock" book series, and the bonus materials that I make available to you, I put everything on the table...all my knowledge gathered over the last 30 plus years, to help you get through the difficult days ahead." Of course you COULD be one of those "fortunate few" IF you know what to expect and take the necessary steps to prepare now. If you do you could potentially save the life and livelihood of both yourself and anyone else that you care about. For that matter, you might even save their lives. It really depends on YOU and the choices YOU make after reading this book.

Book excerpt: The Bible in History. A study of the history, folklore, and occasionally even the mathematics underlying the Bible. A sort of dictionary of scholarly material you likely won’t find elsewhere. Dedicated to Elizabeth Rosenberg, Patricia Rosenberg, and Catie Jo Pidel. Please understand that this is not a Biblical commentary. Also, while I try very hard to avoid actual theological discussions, the work is very much based on "external evidence" -- the manuscripts of the Bible, the evidence of other historical records, the findings of science, the folklore about the Bible. Some of this can be offensive to some, particularly those who try to find exact literal truth in the Bible. I hope you will accept it (or else not read it :-) in that light. If you are still interested, there is a lot of historical background about the Bible here -- not always direct links to the Bible, but the context of the nations among whom the Israelites lived. There is no Biblical mention of (say) Nabopolassar of Babylon, but his actions would deeply influence Judean history. Knowing even a little of that history can help understand the Bible. Also, where there are variant readings in the manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, I note it. This may mean that we are uncertain what the Bible says -- and hence what it means. I try either to recover the original meaning or, in some cases, to assess the meanings of both readings. And then there are the tidbits of science and folklore and anything else I can think of.... The result is a grab bag. Some parts may be useful, some may not. The idea is to browse and see what strikes your fancy. With luck, you'll understand more about the Bible after doing so.

Book excerpt: Against a background of continuing erosion of Jewish numbers, the book investigates the many facets of Jewish identity by throwing the spotlight on people of part-Jewish descent, on born Jews on the fringes of Jewish life and those who have sought alternative affiliations. Emma Klein also calls for a response from religious and lay leaders to parochial communal attitudes and the anomaly of the definition of Jewish status in Jewish law which may be seen to contribute to the erosion.
