Book Synopsis I Am Because We Are by : Chidiogo Akunyili-Parr
Download or read book I Am Because We Are written by Chidiogo Akunyili-Parr and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative and intimate memoir, a daughter tells the story of her mother, a pan-African hero who faced down misogyny and battled corruption in Nigeria. Inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu — the importance of community over the individual — and outraged by injustice, Dora Akunyili took on fraudulent drug manufacturers whose products killed millions, including her sister. A woman in a man’s world, she was elected and became a cabinet minister, but she had to deal with political manoeuvrings, death threats, and an assassination attempt for defending the voiceless. She suffered for it, as did her marriage and six children. I Am Because We Are illuminates the role of kinship, family, and the individual’s place in society, while revealing a life of courage, how community shaped it, and the web of humanity that binds us all.

Book excerpt: “One of the best books for brides . . . Her satirical, tongue-in-cheek take on making your wedding all about yourself will offer some much-needed laughs.” —Real Simple In this bridal gag gift, Upright Citizens Brigade comedian Laura Willcox writes in the voice of an overbearing, outrageous wedding planner, covering all aspects of a wedding—from the moment of engagement (hopefully with the ring you’ve been not so subtly emailing him about for months), all the way through the final minutes of the big day. Accompanied by Jason O’Malley’s humorous illustrations, Willcox offers tongue-in-cheek advice for every wedding-planning moment, whether it’s dreaming up the perfect wedding-weekend hashtag, planning a gift registry to make everyone jealous of your fabulous lifestyle, or figuring out how to distance yourself from the poor, unfortunate souls who didn’t make the cut for your guest list. Laura Willcox’s refreshing take on all things bride will turn tradition on its head, and have you rolling your eyes and reading passages out loud to your engaged (and married) friends. This funny book is a perfect gift for the friend who can’t stop pinning to her dream wedding board, bridezilla-to-be, or any bride who would benefit from a much-needed break from the stress and madness of wedding planning. “Perfectly mocks the absurd wedding-planning industry. Whether you’re having a big wedding to prove something to your ex, or a small wedding to make your loved ones feel excluded, this book will make you laugh through the overwhelming planning process.” —Lauren Lapkus, actor and comedian

Book Synopsis I Am Because We Are by : Betty Press
Download or read book I Am Because We Are written by Betty Press and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am Because We Are features 125 black-and-white photographs by Betty Press taken all over East and West Africa since 1987, combined with related African proverbs compiled by Annetta Miller, an American born in Tanzania. The book highlights the importance of proverbs in educating members of African societies on how to think, how to behave, and how to have a better life. Press took these photographs with the goal of making a significant educational and artistic contribution to the appreciation and understanding of African culture and society as well as our own. The photographs of daily life deal with knowledge, cooperation, love, beauty, friendship, hope, humor, sorrow, happiness, gratitude, dance, tradition, faith, peace, war, death, and human relationships. These are the same themes found in African proverbial language. Thus came the natural idea of coupling images with proverbs. Together they offer a powerful expression of African life and the universality of human emotions, ideas, and knowledge.

Download or read book I Am We written by Dave Ursillo and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am We is a soulful collection of poems from author and yogi Dave Ursillo that invites you deeper into your journey of yoga, or yoking, in your everyday life. The yoga of life is a personal voyage beyond ordinary well-being-a liberating expedition into total, unapologetic union between body, mind and spirit. Cultivating this soul-deep harmony is a lifelong practice that compels you to make peace between your warring facets, stitch wounds so you can heal, discover connection and love in the world around you, and illuminate the divine spirit that resides within. I Am We invites you to unearth the many faces that make up the unique soul called You, and bring them into harmony. These scalpel-sized poems skewer self-doubt, dismiss fear at its source, and excavate the true self from bondage as you live your life to the fullest, every day. Explore your playful side ("A HAND STRETCHED OUT") and the undeniably powerful essence of your divinity ("I AM THE STARS"). Drink in devotion in your daily life ("TALKING WITH GOD") before dipping into a little foul-mouthed defiance ("SOME KIND OF SELF-LOVE"). Swirl in vivid ideals ("HURLING PRAYERS") and stand up for yourself, without apology ("THOUGH STONES SHALL CRUMBLE"). I Am We is a companion, a guide, and the diary you never kept. Surrender into a state of blissful vulnerability or being broken open ("THE SHELL OF ME"). Swim through feeling just-fallen-in-love ("LOVE-DRUNK"). Knock on death's door, and live ("THE FLOW HAS FOUND ME"). With the same artful emotion and engaging depth that inspired readers in his poetic debut (God Whispers on the Wind, 2012), Ursillo's second collection of poems exists to empower your journey of yoking yourself into peace, fullness and truth. "Poems may be written with less ink than could cover a scalpel," Ursillo writes in the introduction, "but can entirely skewer a galactic conundrum down to a morsel for our noshing. A twisted, thorny dilemma loses some of its prickly might when a poem can cut free the rose atop it." I Am We invites union of mind, body and spirit with poems that knit the many faces of You under the banner of One Soul. Explore this collection today and discover meaningful morsels that will speak to you and through you on your journey to wholeness.

Book Synopsis Who Am I? by : Christine L. B. Selby
Download or read book Who Am I? written by Christine L. B. Selby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what identity is, what factors contribute to it, how it develops, and the impacts that a strong or weak sense of self can have on a person's health, happiness, and future. Many teens grapple with the seemingly simple question, "Who am I?" and struggle to integrate their experiences at school, at home, and with friends into their burgeoning sense of identity. How teens see themselves can influence the friends they choose, the decisions they make, and their mental and physical well-being. Having a strong sense of self can help them resist peer pressure, avoid risky behaviors, and make choices and plans that align with their values and interests. Yet research shows that such factors as heavy social media use can have a strongly negative effect on healthy identity formation for today's teens. Who Am I? Understanding Identity and the Many Ways We Define Ourselves examines the subjects of identity and identity formation across the lifespan, with special emphasis on the teenage years. Beyond simply discussing relevant psychological theories, the book focuses on how identity formation happens in the real world and how it affects the daily lives of teens. It also includes a collection of fictional case studies that provide concrete, relatable illustrations of concepts discussed in the book.
Book Synopsis I Am the People by : Partha Chatterjee
Download or read book I Am the People written by Partha Chatterjee and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forms of liberal government that emerged after World War II are in the midst of a profound crisis. In I Am the People, Partha Chatterjee reconsiders the concept of popular sovereignty in order to explain today’s dramatic outburst of movements claiming to speak for “the people.” To uncover the roots of populism, Chatterjee traces the twentieth-century trajectory of the welfare state and neoliberal reforms. Mobilizing ideals of popular sovereignty and the emotional appeal of nationalism, anticolonial movements ushered in a world of nation-states while liberal democracies in Europe guaranteed social rights to their citizens. But as neoliberal techniques shrank the scope of government, politics gave way to technical administration by experts. Once the state could no longer claim an emotional bond with the people, the ruling bloc lost the consent of the governed. To fill the void, a proliferation of populist leaders have mobilized disaffected groups into a battle that they define as the authentic people against entrenched oligarchy. Once politics enters a spiral of competitive populism, Chatterjee cautions, there is no easy return to pristine liberalism. Only a counter-hegemonic social force that challenges global capital and facilitates the equal participation of all peoples in democratic governance can achieve significant transformation. Drawing on thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Ernesto Laclau and with a particular focus on the history of populism in India, I Am the People is a sweeping, theoretically rich account of the origins of today’s tempests.

Book excerpt: Have you been seeking answers but not really finding them? Have your dreams started to feel like just that-dreams? Has the fear of what other people will think stopped you from being who you want to be and doing what you want to do? Does a fulfilled life feel like something meant for others, not for you?Erin Werley used to feel that way, too. Then, one day, she started to receive "deposits" from her inner voice, which calls itself "I Am." And everything in her life began to change. Most people would call One Truth, One Law: I Am, I Create a "channeled" book, but I Am is adamant that it isn't. As I Am puts it, "Every human is me. Every human can access me. When somebody says they're 'channeling' something outside of themselves, it's because they don't understand that they are God and that we are all one."Written as a series of conversations between I Am and Werley's husband, Phil, the message of One Truth, One Law is simple: Every single one of us is God. We just have a confused filter that thinks we're not God.I Am's intention with this book is not to offer you information that can only come through Werley. It's to teach you how to access your own inner voice so that you'll finally get answers to your questions. So that you'll be able to make your dreams a reality. So that you'll tap into your own God wisdom that no longer worries about what others think. So that you'll know a fulfilled life is something for you and not just other people.Once you really let it soak in that you are God, and you're here to further expand the universe through this physical experience, the limits on your dreams start to fall away.
