Dionne and MSNBC host Joy-Ann Reid. "It is a political partisan's dream to see them [Obama's words] so finely gathered here." - Washington Post We Are the Change We Seek is a collection of Barack Obama's 27 greatest addresses: beginning with his 2002 speech opposing the Iraq War and closing with his emotional farewell address in Chicago in January 2017. As president, Obama's words had the power to move the country, and often the world, as few presidents before him. Whether acting as Commander in Chief or Consoler in Chief, Obama adopted a unique rhetorical style that could simultaneously speak to the national mood and change the course of public events. Obama's eloquence, both written and spoken, propelled him to national prominence and ultimately made it possible for the son of a Kenyan man and a white woman from Kansas to become the first black president of the United States. These speeches span Obama's career--from his time in state government through to the end of his tenure as president--and the issues most important to our time: war, inequality, race relations, gun violence and human rights. The book opens with an essay placing Obama's oratorical contributions within the flow of American history by E.J. Dionne Jr., columnist and author of Why The Right Went Wrong, and Joy Reid, the host of AM Joy on MSNBC and author of Fracture.

Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

A cannon. A strap. A piece. A biscuit. A burner. A heater. A chopper. A gat. A hammer A tool for RULE Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator? Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES. And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if Will gets off that elevator. Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Octavia Butler, here is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. Change is constant. The world, our bodies, and our minds are in a constant state of flux. They are a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, Emergent Strategy teaches us to map and assess the swirling structures and to read them as they happen, all the better to shape that which ultimately shapes us, personally and politically. A resolutely materialist spirituality based equally on science and science fiction: a wild feminist and afro-futurist ride! adrienne maree brown, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements, is a social justice facilitator, healer, and doula living in Detroit.

For the first time, her writings are published in one collection. Through essays, letters, and journal entries, Andaiye’s thinking on the intersections of gender, race, class, and power are powerfully articulated, Caribbean histories emerge, and stories from a life lived at the barricades are revealed. We learn about the early years of the Working Peopl’s Alliance, the meaning asnd impact of the murder of Walter Rodney and the fall of the Grenada Revolution. Throughout, we bear witness to Andaiye’s acute understanding of politics rooted in communities and the daily lives of so-called ordinary people. Featuring forewords by Clem Seecharan and Robin DG Kelley, these texts will become vital tools in our own struggles to “overcome the power relations that are embedded in every unequal facet of our lives.”

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Imagine Wanting Only This—a timely and moving meditation on isolation and longing, both as individuals and as a society. There is a silent epidemic in America: loneliness. Shameful to talk about and often misunderstood, loneliness is everywhere, from the most major of metropolises to the smallest of towns. In Seek You, Kristen Radtke's wide-ranging exploration of our inner lives and public selves, Radtke digs into the ways in which we attempt to feel closer to one another, and the distance that remains. Through the lenses of gender and violence, technology and art, Radtke ushers us through a history of loneliness and longing, and shares what feels impossible to share. Ranging from the invention of the laugh-track to the rise of Instagram, the bootstrap-pulling cowboy to the brutal experiments of Harry Harlow, Radtke investigates why we engage with each other, and what we risk when we turn away. With her distinctive, emotionally-charged drawings and deeply empathetic prose, Kristen Radtke masterfully shines a light on some of our most vulnerable and sublime moments, and asks how we might keep the spaces between us from splitting entirely.

Book excerpt: Blending his riveting personal story with innovative ideas about how to win the war on terror, former marine turned Al Jazeera reporter Josh Rushing addresses all the issues he was not allowed to talk about when he was in uniform. If we are to win the war on terror, Rushing explains, we have to interact with the media at home and abroad in order to control the way we are perceived. By refusing to appear on Al Jazeera, Western leaders allow people who disagree with the current administration to represent the West to the Arab world in a skewed, negative way. By taking readers inside Al Jazeera, Rushing offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at the controversial news channel and shows how the West can harness it to its advantage, relay a positive message to the Arab public, and hear what it has to say in return.

Book excerpt: If you long to draw nearer to the Creator, crave to feel the Spirit’s comfort, or yearn to follow Jesus along the journey of faith, you will treasure the humble wisdom that has crossed your path. Seek, Wait, Trust: Poems for Navigating the Spiritual Journey contains the pensive, poetic voice of Mary Morgan Brown and the compelling prayers of Rev. Dr. Gregg Brown. “These are not just literary offerings, but also testimonies of what God can do and will do,” Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. observes in his Foreword. “In many of these poems, scripture verses have morphed into direct advice not so much to be quoted, but actions to be taken. Listen not so much for rhymes or meter, literal or symbolic intent. Listen with your heart to hear the voice of God. God has heard the interrogatives, intercessions, petitions, and gratitude of your soul and has lovingly placed an answer in your spirit...If you do not discern the meaning on your first reading, read again and again. When you are finally ready, say ‘Speak Lord, your servant child is ready to hear!’” This book is a boat of wisdom for those on a quest for deeper meaning and purpose in life. The foreword is the bow; the poetry, the hull; and the prayers, the stern. Take the helm. Seek and chart a steady spiritual course. Wait for God’s navigating guidance. Trust your entire destination to the living Lord. • “Mary’s pensive, piercing insight and Gregg’s vigorous, Heaven-bound prayers will leave the reader revitalized and transformed for a closer walk with God and more loving interactions with people.” – Jackie Wright, publicist, President of Wright Enterprises • “Ms. Brown’s poignant, tender, and always relatable poems render new insight to scripture, bridging the peaks and valleys of an ongoing spiritual search.” – Robin Fletcher, writer, Founder of RdF Consulting Services • “It is a poetic dance and masterpiece of movement through self-discovery...it is the essential traveling case required of believers.” – Rev. Dr. Clarence L. Johnson, Senior Pastor, Mills Grove Christian Church, Disciples of Christ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who am I? My relationship with myself answered that question. Self awareness on an intimate level helped me find unconditional love. I had to first develop a closer relationship with myself. This personal experience helped me to stop judging and criticizing myself, therefore I stopped doing it to others. My relationships began to improve with others, even if I did not like the person. I realized that my personal relationship with myself affected others and created my reality. Am I gentle, ashamed, or merciful towards myself, am I overly critical of myself, or do I hide my true feelings from myself? I used to be unconscious of how I really felt about myself. I had to accept everything about me, positive and negative, even my past mistakes, love all of me even when I was broke. I believe a good relationship with ourselves is equivalent to a personal relationship with God, the higher self, and the universe within. This allowed me to trust myself. A healthy relationship with ourselves can only be possible through self-reflection, looking inwards into our darkness. Unconditional love changed my perception of myself, and that everyone matters regardless of my personal feelings. We are who we are. This way we can love others as they are, this does not mean we have to like them. My relationship with my wife was still not perfect, I don't believe that there is such a situation, I am still learning and growing. I believe that external relationships are a direct reflection of who we are internally. Intimacy which is (into me I seek). Breakups can be one of the toughest things to overcome when we do not learn why it had to end. The stability of a relationship begins in infancy, psychological anguish is the reason why most of my relationships fail. I became aware of spirit within, I started to see my old perception of myself unfold in front of my eyes. I then saw how my strengths and weaknesses due to insecurities affected my relationships with others. I noticed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Dubose provides a good starting point for those seeking the truth of Christianity and its evidence. In the introduction, he introduces Pascal's Wager and explains why one's heart should be open to the possibility of a God existing. He then starts with science, going through several scientific findings that suggest a God is real. Following this, he delves into philosophy, explaining that through philosophical reasoning, one can know that God exists. After this, he explores history, specifically as laid out in the Bible. He explains how prophecies not only show that a God exists but that the God of the Bible is that God. He discusses how Jesus's miracles and resurrection are so well attested that they should be believed. Dubose also addresses objections to God in each category and provides responses to these challenges. Lastly, he examines phenomena such as near-death experiences, prayer studies, and modern-day miracle reports to argue for the existence of the supernatural. At the end of each section on the evidence for God, he offers a short list of recommended books for readers interested in furthering their studies.
