Book excerpt: How a reluctant soldier and ranger, excelling in reconnaissance, intelligence, and covert operations, details his journey post-Cold War training to the War on Terror. I am a soldier and a ranger a specialist in reconnaissance, intelligence, and covert operations. I never wanted to be a soldier, but I found that I excelled at it. I have fired my weapons in anger, infiltrated terrorist groups, and made and burnt sources. Number 788 is my story. Being good at doing bad things is not always a blessing. You cant be the judge, only the executioner. The concept of for the greater good always has a flip side. You are moving and living in the shadows. The ones in control grant you the ultimate power of life, but a life lived in the shadows is never your own. My development was slow and meticulous; it was improvised and innovative. Now, I write about what it was like to be pushed past the brink of what I thought was humanly possible. I aim to share my flawed path, lessons learned, relationships forged, revelations of self and the workings of others, with the very small hope of inspiring a few new generation warriors. I was trained at a unique time, as I joined the forces after the Cold War but just before the attacks of 9-11. During my formation, the lack of controls and regulation came with tremendous risks but also significant opportunities I seized them. I am the product of brave officers who took action with great personal risk to save a regiment without permission and by asking for forgiveness later. Officers who believed in the saying, Who Dares Wins. I share my small place as a silent mediator between the light and shadows in the long and flawed history of Western and Nordic fighters. The end of the Cold War and subsequent peacekeeping missions caught the Swedish military flatfooted when the War on Terror came around. The need for special operations forces was in high demand, but for the most part, Sweden lacked this niche capability. While still in its conceptual form, the International Ranger Platoon, an elite force that became a Special Purpose Unit within the Ranger Battalion, was used to fill the gap. Newly recruited, I was drawn to the challenge and adventure of it all; I took on the tough selection course the reward was to be part of something new the Special Purpose Units.
Download or read book Viper Force written by and published by Zenith Imprint. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilot of the F-16 Viper, which is the U.S. Air Forces frontline fighter and attack aircraft, is at the pinnacle of combat aviation. Viper Force tells the story of what it takes to become an F-16 pilot and what its like to fly and fight the Viper in combat. Because the F-16 is a dual-purpose combat aircraft, its pilot must master two widely divergent disciplines: air-to-air flying against enemy fighters to maintain control of the air over the battle field and air-to-ground flying in support of ground forces, soldiers, and marines, in contact. The crucible for creation of the Viper pilot is the air forces 56th Fighter Wing, the successor to World War IIs 56th Fighter Group, the legendary Zemkes Wolpack, which also flew a fighter/attack aircraft, the P-47 Thunderbolt. Viper Force also provides an up-close and personal look at the F-16 Viper squadron at war with information on its missions, command and control in the air, and the crucially important but often overlooked maintenance and ordnance ground crew.

Book Synopsis The Sporting Statesman - Novak Djokovic and the Rise of Serbia by : Chris Bowers
Download or read book The Sporting Statesman - Novak Djokovic and the Rise of Serbia written by Chris Bowers and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novak Djokovic is not just one of the world's great tennis players - he is the defacto ambassador for his homeland, Serbia. Not an easy job, given the lingering resonance in the world's news bulletins of Serbia's role in the 1990s Yugoslav wars. To this day, the words 'Serbia' and 'atrocities' are linked in the minds of many.In this study of both Djokovic and Serbia, Chris Bowers paints two powerful portraits. He traces the story of the boy from modest surroundings, telling of how he met the woman who not only taught him tennis but how to deal with life as a high-profile icon, charts his battle with illness and his relationship with a volatile father, and how his on-court deeds have made his country proud. But he also tells the story of Serbia, pulling no punches about its role in the 1990s wars but offering a sensitive interpretation of the hopes and aspirations of a people with a troubled past.Bowers, biographer of Swiss tennis star Roger Federer and the British deputy-prime-minister Nick Clegg, weaves together these sporting and geo-political strands to present a sensitive portrait of a man and his people, and how determination married to sensitivity can create a sporting statesman.

Book Synopsis The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and cross-cultural competence by : Anne Julia Hagen
Download or read book The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and cross-cultural competence written by Anne Julia Hagen and published by Universitätsverlag Potsdam. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the function that cross-cultural competence (3C) has for NATO in a military context while focusing on two member states and their armed forces: the United States and Germany. Three dimensions were established to analyze 3C internally and externally: dimension A, dealing with 3C within the military organization;dimension B, focusing on 3C in a coalition environment/multicultural NATO contingent, for example while on a mission/training exercise abroad;and dimension C, covering 3C and NATO missions abroad with regard to interaction with the local population. When developing the research design, the cultural studies-based theory of hegemony constructed by Antonio Gramsci was applied to a comprehensive document analysis of 3C coursework and regulations as well as official documents in order to establish a typification for cross-cultural competence. As the result, 3C could be categorized as Type I – Ethical 3C, Type II – Hegemonic 3C, and Type III – Dominant 3C. Attributes were assigned according to each type. To validate the established typification, qualitative surveys were conducted with NATO (ACT), the U.S. Armed Forces (USCENTCOM),and the German Armed Forces (BMVg). These interviews validated the typification and revealed a varied approach to 3C in the established dimensions. It became evident that dimensions A and B indicated a prevalence of Type III, which greatly impacts the work atmosphere and effectiveness for NATO (ACT). In contrast, dimension C revealed the use of postcolonial mechanisms by NATO forces, such as applying one’s value systems to other cultures and having the appearance of an occupying force when 3C is not applied (Type I-II). In general, the function of each 3C type in the various dimensions could be determined. In addition, a comparative study of the document analysis and the qualitative surveys resulted in a canon for culture-general skills. Regarding the determined lack of coherence in 3C correlating with a demonstrably negative impact on effectiveness and efficiency as well as interoperability, a NATO standard in the form of a standardization agreement (STANAG) was suggested based on the aforementioned findings, with a focus on: empathy, cross-cultural awareness, communication skills (including active listening), flexibility and adaptability, and interest. Moreover, tolerance of ambiguity and teachability, patience, observation skills, and perspective-taking could be considered significant. Suspending judgment and respect are also relevant skills here. At the same time, the document analysis also revealed a lack of coherency and consistency in 3C education and interorganizational alignment. In particular, the documents examined for the U.S. Forces indicated divergent approaches. Furthermore, the interview analysis disclosed a large discrepancy in part between doctrine and actual implementation with regard to the NATO Forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANTHONY LIVINGSTON HALL COMMENTS ON: Bush's legacy of support for Africa: "I was dismayed by the number of people who refused to believe that Bush had done more for Africa than any other US president; notwithstanding testimonials I proffered from renowned crusaders for African development (like Sir Bob Geldof and Bono) to support this claim." Oprah's school for African girls: "I applaud Oprah for founding this school for the same reason I applauded Madonna for adopting that African boy: She is fulfilling a need which honors our shared humanity in a way that few of us can afford, or are even conscientious enough, to do." Native Americans ethnically cleansing blacks from their tribes: "Indeed, I do marvel at this curious thing: that they would rather be condemned as racists for expelling blacks than be criticized as niggards for hording their gambling loot." French President Nicolas Sarkozy's love affair with the US "Sarkozy displays a Blairite affinity for America that any self-respecting Frenchman must find particularly gaulling." Bungled terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow: "Wannabe suicide bombers rammed their jeep packed with explosives into Glasgow Airport on Saturday morning shouting "Allah, Allah, Allah"-no doubt hoping to go off in a blaze of glory for eternal assignations with their apocryphal 72 virgins." Steroids in baseball: "In fact, steroid use has flourished in baseball (and other professional sports) pursuant to an open conspiracy among players and team owners to feed the gladiatorial lust of fans who want to see bigger, stronger and faster cyborgs perform for their atavistic enjoyment."
