Book excerpt: Kingston writer Richard Cumyn’s second book of short stories is a remarkable collection of fiction about the curse of modernity–displacement. In striking scenes Cumyn subtly explores our own sense of abandonment and loneliness in the face of change, movement and loss. Cumyn’s prose is sparse and direct, the violence supressed beneath the surface casual and foreboding. His characters are at once familiar and eerily distinct, their relationships a tender blend of heartbreak and affection. Separations achieved through illness, betrayal, aging, necessity, choice or dismissal represent an emotional x-ray of a society looking for permanence in an increasingly fluid and precarious world. This collection will haunt you like a shadow creeping over a suburban street– all the landmarks appear familiar but each door leads to unimagined worlds. Great stories await there.

Book excerpt: The increased movement of people globally has changed the face of national and international schooling. Higher levels of mobility have resulted from both the willing movement of students and their families with a desire to create a better life, and the forced movement of refugee families travelling away from war, famine and other extreme circumstances. This book explores the idea that the complex connections created by the forces of globalisation have led to a diminishing difference between what were once described as international schools and national schools. By examining a selection of responses from students attending international schools in Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Philippines and Switzerland, the book discusses key issues surrounding identity and cosmopolitan senses of belonging. Chapters draw from current literature and recent qualitative research to highlight the concerns that students face within the international school community, including social, psychological, and academic difficulties. The interviews provide a rich and unique body of knowledge, demonstrating how perceptions of identity and belonging are changing, especially with affiliation to a national or a global identity. The notion that international students have become global citizens through their affiliation to a global rather than a national identity exhibits a changing and potentially irreversible trend. Global Identity in Multicultural and International Educational Contexts will be of key interest to researchers, academics and policy makers involved with international schooling and globalised education.

Four women priests have found God in the most unexpected places: in a dive bar, at the drugstore, and even at the grave. As we go about our everyday lives, the divine can feel elusive: grappling with the realities of cancer, infertility treatments, searching for a birth story, and honoring the divine in a child with autism. Yet God was there all along. This book is a guide to help you name God's presence in your own history. Reflection questions and instructions are included for writing and sharing your spiritual autobiography in the hope that you, too, discover grace in the rearview mirror.

Book excerpt: History of Plymouth Plantation is regarded as the most authoritative and authentic account of the Pilgrims and the early years of the colony they founded. Written between 1630 and 1651, the journal describes the story of the Pilgrims from 1608, when they settled in the Dutch Republic on the European mainland, through the 1620 Mayflower voyage to the New World, until 1647. The book ends with a list, written in 1651, of Mayflower passengers and their whereabouts. William Bradford (1590-1657) was an English Separatist, one of the signatories to the Mayflower Compact and the second Governor of the Plymouth Colony.

Book excerpt: There are hundreds of travel guides that tell you all the good things about a place and gloss over the not-so-good. This guide acts as an antidote to that and tells you what you really want to know. What are the chances of leaving the place alive? Will the food or water kill you? How friendly or violent are the locals? Most of the time you don't get to know this until you are actually there - but by then it is too late. 101 Places Not to Visit takes you through a selection of cities and countries that any wise traveller should avoid. Its tongue-in-cheek, laugh-out-loud humour outlines the not-so-attractive elements of each place. A star rating of Boredom, Likelihood of Fatal Visit, Friendliness of People, and Ease of Travelling is included at the start of each entry to give the reader a taster. This is followed by an outline of the history of the place, its culture (or lack of it), and what culinary delights you can hope to endure. Arranged by continent, the spreads are alphabetical and concentrate on cities. Each city's History, Climate, Visas etc. is discussed. There are also special spreads devoted to whole countries.
