Book Synopsis The Incomplete Book of Running by : Peter Sagal
Download or read book The Incomplete Book of Running written by Peter Sagal and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Sagal, the host of NPR’s Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! and a popular columnist for Runner’s World, shares “commentary and reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a runner or not, it will move you” (Susan Orlean). On the verge of turning forty, Peter Sagal—brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew with a disposition towards heft, and a sedentary star of public radio—started running seriously. And much to his own surprise, he kept going, faster and further, running fourteen marathons and logging tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails all over the United States and the world, including the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he crossed the finish line moments before the bombings. In The Incomplete Book of Running, Sagal reflects on the trails, tracks, and routes he’s traveled, from the humorous absurdity of running charity races in his underwear—in St. Louis, in February—or attempting to “quiet his colon” on runs around his neighborhood—to the experience of running as a guide to visually impaired runners, and the triumphant post-bombing running of the Boston Marathon in 2014. With humor and humanity, Sagal also writes about the emotional experience of running, body image, the similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, the legacy of running as passed down from parent to child, and the odd but extraordinary bonds created between strangers and friends. The result is “a brilliant book about running…What Peter runs toward is strength, understanding, endurance, acceptance, faith, hope, and charity” (P.J. O’Rourke).

Book Synopsis Sparse representation of visual data for compression and compressed sensing by : Ehsan Miandji
Download or read book Sparse representation of visual data for compression and compressed sensing written by Ehsan Miandji and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing advances in computational photography have introduced a range of new imaging techniques for capturing multidimensional visual data such as light fields, BRDFs, BTFs, and more. A key challenge inherent to such imaging techniques is the large amount of high dimensional visual data that is produced, often requiring GBs, or even TBs, of storage. Moreover, the utilization of these datasets in real time applications poses many difficulties due to the large memory footprint. Furthermore, the acquisition of large-scale visual data is very challenging and expensive in most cases. This thesis makes several contributions with regards to acquisition, compression, and real time rendering of high dimensional visual data in computer graphics and imaging applications. Contributions of this thesis reside on the strong foundation of sparse representations. Numerous applications are presented that utilize sparse representations for compression and compressed sensing of visual data. Specifically, we present a single sensor light field camera design, a compressive rendering method, a real time precomputed photorealistic rendering technique, light field (video) compression and real time rendering, compressive BRDF capture, and more. Another key contribution of this thesis is a general framework for compression and compressed sensing of visual data, regardless of the dimensionality. As a result, any type of discrete visual data with arbitrary dimensionality can be captured, compressed, and rendered in real time. This thesis makes two theoretical contributions. In particular, uniqueness conditions for recovering a sparse signal under an ensemble of multidimensional dictionaries is presented. The theoretical results discussed here are useful for designing efficient capturing devices for multidimensional visual data. Moreover, we derive the probability of successful recovery of a noisy sparse signal using OMP, one of the most widely used algorithms for solving compressed sensing problems.

Download or read book Soulmates written by Jyoti Gupta and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It took me a couple of hours to gain the energy to get up. Reluctantly, I left my bed and headed to the shower. I closed my eyes, enjoying the warmth of the hot water running down my skin. Blood pooled on the bathroom floor, washing off from my body. I gasped loudly as a bullet whizzed past me, missing my head by a very slight margin. Somebody close by screamed loudly, jolting me awake. I had slumped against the wall and dozed off because of the heavy doses. The shower was still on and clear water ran down. I looked around, dazed. There were no signs of blood or bullets. I hurriedly got out of the bathroom. I need to get out of the house as soon as possible to remain sane. Everybody has a past; everyone lies; there’s a secret love hidden in every heart. But it looks like Veronica has more than her mysterious smile. How far are you willing to go for your love? How much would you deceive? What can you do to be with the love of your life? Can you die? Can you kill?
Book Synopsis The Story of a Marriage by : Helena Wayne

Book excerpt: Much has been written about the work of Bronislaw Malinowski but little is available about his personal life and thoughts. These letters, available for the first time, were written by him and Elsie Masson from 1916 to her death in 1935. They chronoicle their meeting and subsequent extraordinary marriage in a highly accessible and revealing way, also telling the story of his remarkable, courageous and largely unknown wife and personalise Malinowski, not just as a teacher and scientist, but as a husband, father and friend. There is a tremendous variety in the correspondence. The Malinowskis lived in half a dozen countries and visited many more and their gypsy lifestyle, his brilliant successes in his professional life, the tragedy of her illness, as well as their continuing love story are all recorded. The letters bring in luminaries such as Sir James Frazer, and Malinowski's students, many of whom went on to become famous anthropologists themselves. There are also fascinating glimpses of attitudes and day-to-day life in the twenties and thirties, including the rise of Nazism and Fascism. Volume I presents the letters written between 1916 and the beginning of 1920 in Australia and New Guinea. They start with a retrospective diary letter from Elsie Masson to Bronislaw Malinowski and detail their first meeting and eventual falling in love. Malinowski describes his third, and final, time of fieldwork in New Guinea, in the Trobriand Islands, 1917-1918. He then returns to Australia where, despite opposition from Elsie's parents, they marry and then spend a year there. At this time they both succumb to the Spanish 'flu epidemic but, having recovered, then move to England.

Book Synopsis The Black, The White, and The Grey by : J.M. Taylor
Download or read book The Black, The White, and The Grey written by J.M. Taylor and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you proud of where you come from, Are you proud of what you’ve done? Do you linger alone, living in your past, Or are you proud of how far you’ve come? (“Proud,” p. 123) For some of us, life is not easy, right from the jump. What seems so natural and easy to others can become hard—hard as ice, stifling as quicksand—when our own minds seem to plague us. Perhaps it’s because of something we haven’t been able to process—some trauma, heartbreak, grief. Or perhaps life has never been easy to metabolize—dealing with the pain we inevitably must face. Striking, forceful, and animated by intense feeling, The Black, the White, and the Grey is a tripartite poetic journey through mental illness—from the black of depression to the white of manic euphoria, through the grey numbness that lies between. The poems speak to difficult feelings many of us encounter, but which are rarely given voice, from the despair of addiction to the suffocating pain of a loved one’s death. For those of us who do identify with mental illness, we may see ourselves especially reflected in first-time author Taylor’s dauntlessly honest poems, which speak to the darkest corners of human experience—heartbreak, grief, substance abuse, self-harm, addiction, suicide—as well as the love and faith that can (sometimes) manage to carry us through. Ultimately, though, no matter the weight we must bear, as the book’s final section, the white, affirms, there is hope and healing at the end of the tunnel we travel.
