Book excerpt: revelatory and redemptive memoir from the lead guitarist of the legendary band Def Leppard--the first book ever written by one of its members--chronicling the band's rise to superstardom and how they've maintained it for three decades. Maybe you've heard of Phil Collen as the rock star who gave up alcohol and meat more than twenty-five years ago. Most likely you've seen him shirtless--in photos or in real life--flaunting his impeccably toned body to appreciative female fans. But it wasn't always like this. Collen worked his way up from nothing, teaching himself guitar from scratch as a teenager by imitating his heroes. He slogged it out in London-based pub bands for years, long before Def Leppard transformed from unknowns to icons, from playing openers in near-empty arenas to headlining in those same stadiums. But as Collen discovered, true overnight success is a myth. Like the other band members, he had to struggle and fight his way to the top; in the end, he says, "our work ethic saved us." This is Collen's story--an underdog tale featuring a bunch of ordinary working-class lads who rose to mega-stardom, and an account of the failures, triumphs, challenges, and rock-hard dedication it takes to make dreams come true.--Adapted from book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'We had balls - and we were naive, in a good way. We just went out there, full throttle...' - Joe Elliott Offering fans the most personal and comprehensive record of Def Leppard's history to date, Definitely: The Story of Def Leppard is narrated by the band in their own words, alongside a wealth of memorabilia from the Def Leppard vault and individual band members' private archives. Despite an average age of only 18, Def Leppard burst onto the hard rock scene in 1980 like a group of seasoned veterans. Thinking big from the very start, the blueprint for their music was, as singer Joe Elliott states, "AC/DC meets Queen". Def Leppard's story is one of stratospheric highs and crashing lows, of triumph over adversity. While becoming one of the world's best-selling music artists with blockbuster albums Pyromania and Hysteria, the band overcame drummer Rick Allen's accident, where he lost an arm, and the death of bandmate Steve Clark. But despite tragedy plaguing the group during its 45-year history, Def Leppard never thought about quitting, and continued to write and record, finding success with every release and tour. With brand new text derived from several in-depth interviews with members of the band, as well as archive text from past members, Definitely chronicles Def Leppard's incredible story, from their humble beginnings rehearsing in a spoon factory in Sheffield, to recording ground-breaking multi-platinum albums and touring sell-out stadiums around the world. 'In the summer of 1988 we shifted 4 million copies of Hysteria in the US alone. We were outselling U2, Michael Jackson, Guns 'n' Roses... For about six weeks we were the biggest band in the world.' - Joe Elliott Alongside the book's text are hundreds of items from the band's combined and personal archives, presenting over four decades of Def Leppard history. Granted unlimited access to the Def Leppard vault, the book includes handwritten correspondence, rare vinyl pressings, tour memorabilia, music video storyboards, draft album artwork, press cuttings, previously unpublished photographs and much more. Part memoir, part scrapbook, Definitely: The Story of Def Leppard is the ultimate record of Def Leppard's legendary career.

The band's greatest success came between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. Their 1981 album, High 'n' Dry, was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who helped them begin to define their style, the L.P's standout track "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" becoming one of the first rock videos played on MTV in 1982. The band's next studio album, Pyromania, was released in January 1983, with "Photograph" and "Rock of Ages" as the lead singles, the L.P. being certified diamond (10× platinum), in the U.S.. In 2003, the album was ranked # 384 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Def Leppard's 4th L.P., Hysteria, released in 1987, topped the UK and U.S. album charts. The following year's, Retro Active, included the acoustic hit single "Two Steps Behind" then their greatest-hits album Vault, issued in 1995, featured the UK hit "When Love & Hate Collide". Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, Thomas Edison proclaimed that he could record a live performance and reproduce it perfectly, shocking audiences who found themselves unable to tell whether what they were hearing was an Edison Diamond Disc or a flesh-and-blood musician. Today, the equation is reversed. Whereas Edison proposed that a real performance could be rebuilt with absolute perfection, Pro Tools and digital samplers now allow musicians and engineers to create the illusion of performances that never were. In between lies a century of sonic exploration into the balance between the real and the represented. Tracing the contours of this history, Greg Milner takes us through the major breakthroughs and glorious failures in the art and science of recording. An American soldier monitoring Nazi radio transmissions stumbles onto the open yet revolutionary secret of magnetic tape. Japanese and Dutch researchers build a first-generation digital audio format and watch as their "compact disc" is marketed by the music industry as the second coming of Edison yet derided as heretical by analog loyalists. The music world becomes addicted to volume in the nineties and fights a self-defeating "loudness war" to get its fix. From Les Paul to Phil Spector to King Tubby, from vinyl to pirated CDs to iPods, Milner's Perfecting Sound Forever pulls apart musical history to answer a crucial question: Should a recording document reality as faithfully as possible, or should it improve upon or somehow transcend the music it records? The answers he uncovers will change the very way we think about music.

Book excerpt: Brian Wheat is far from your typical rock star. As bassist for the multi-platinum band, Tesla, he’s enjoyed the spoils of success and lived the sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll lifestyle to the hilt. But it came at a cost, one that took years to repair. In this deeply honest and utterly revealing memoir, Wheat sheds light on the many challenges he faces, including bulimia, weight issues, and the crippling anxiety and depression caused by his conditions. Just like the songs his legendary band made, this is no-nonsense, blue-collar storytelling at its best. While revealing the vulnerable human behind the bass guitar, this autobiography also offers tremendous stories of life on the road, and collaborations and encounters with legendary figures like his pals in Def Leppard, David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper, and Paul McCartney. Son of a Milkman will entertain, surprise, and inspire longtime fans of this enduring band.

Book excerpt: "[An] accomplished debut. . . . The novel is narrated entirely in the second person, a stylistic choice that produces moments of intense intimacy.—The New Yorker "Geary enters the literary arena with a bang: this debut about an unconventional love affair between a teenage boy and an older woman is unassuming but gorgeously rendered."—Publishers Weekly, starred and boxed review Montpelier Parade is just across town, but to Sonny it might as well be a different world. Working with his father in the garden of one of its handsome homes one Saturday, he sees a back door easing open and a beautiful woman coming down the path toward him. This is Vera, the sort of person who seems destined to remain forever out of his reach. Hoping to cast off his loneliness and a restless sense of not belonging—at high school, in his part–time job at the butcher shop, and in the increasingly suffocating company of his own family—Sonny drifts into dreams of a different kind of life. A series of intoxicating encounters with Vera lead him to feel he has fallen in love for the first time, but why does her past seem as unknowable as her future? Unfolding over a bright, rain–soaked Dublin spring, Montpelier Parade is a rich, devastating debut novel about desire, grief, ambition, art, and the choices we must make alone.
