Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of hysteresis phenomena has been traditionally associated with mechanical and magnetic properties of materials. However, recent studies on the dynamics of biological processes suggest switch-like behavior that could be described by mathematical models of hysteresis. This book presents the milestones and perspectives of biological hysteresis and provides a comprehensive and application-oriented introduction to this subject. The target audience primarily comprises researchers but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteresis phenomena are common in numerous physical, mechanical, ecological and biological systems. They reflect memory effects and process irreversibility. The use of hysteresis operators (hysterons) offers an approach to macroscopic modelling of the dynamics of phase transitions and rheological systems. The applications cover processes in electromagnetism, elastoplasticity and population dynamics in particular. Hysterons are also typical elements of control systems where they represent thermostats and other discontinuous controllers with memory. The book offers the first systematic mathematical treatment of hysteresis nonlinearities. Construction procedures are set up for hysterons in various function spaces, in continuous and discontinuous cases. A general theory of variable hysterons is developed, including identification and stability questions. Both deterministic and non-deterministic hysterons are considered, with applications to the study of feedback systems. Many of the results presented - mostly obtained by the authors and their scientific group - have not been published before. The book is essentially self contained and is addressed both to researchers and advanced students.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Phenomena in Physics and Biology by : Richard H. Enns
Download or read book Nonlinear Phenomena in Physics and Biology written by Richard H. Enns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Nonlinear Phenomena-in Physics and Biology was held at the Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada, from 17 - 29 August, 1980. The Institute was made possible through funding by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (who sup plied the major portion of the financial aid), the National Research and Engineering Council of Canada, and Simon Fraser University. The availability of the Banff Centre was made possible through the co sponsorship (with NATO) of the ASI by the Canadian Association of Physicists. 12 invited lecturers and 82 other participants attended the Institute. Except for two lectures on nonlinear waves by Norman Zabusky, which were omitted because it was felt that they already had been exhaustively treated in the available literature, this volume contains the entire text of the invited lectures. In addition, short reports on some of the contributed talks have also been included. The rationale for the ASI and this resulting volume was that many of the hardest problems and most interesting phenomena being studied by scientists today ar.e nonlinear in nature. The nonlinear models involved often span several different disciplines, °a simple example being the Volterra-type model in population dynamics which has its analogue in nonlinear optics and plasma physics (the 3-wave problem), in the discussion of the social behavior of animals, and in biological competition and selection at the molecular level.

Book Synopsis Dynamical Modeling of Biological Systems by : Stilianos Louca
Download or read book Dynamical Modeling of Biological Systems written by Stilianos Louca and published by Stilianos Louca. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces concepts and practical tools for dynamical mathematical modeling of biological systems. Dynamical models describe the behavior of a system over time as a result of internal feedback loops and external forcing, based on mathematically formulated dynamical laws, similarly to how Newton's laws describe the movement of celestial bodies. Dynamical models are increasingly popular in biology, as they tend to be more powerful than static regression models. This book is meant for undergraduate and graduate students in physics, applied mathematics and data science with an interest in biology, as well as students in biology with a strong interest in mathematical methods. The book covers deterministic models (for example differential equations), stochastic models (for example Markov chains and autoregressive models) and model-independent aspects of time series analysis. Plenty of examples and exercises are included, often taken or inspired from the scientific literature, and covering a broad range of topics such as neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, microbiology, physiology, epidemiology and conservation. The book delivers generic modeling techniques used across a wide range of situations in biology, and hence readers from other scientific disciplines will find that much of the material is also applicable in their own field. Proofs of most mathematical statements are included for the interested reader, but are not essential for a practical understanding of the material. The book introduces the popular scientific programming language MATLAB as a tool for simulating models, fitting models to data, and visualizing data and model predictions. The material taught is current as of MATLAB version 2022b. The material is taught in a sufficiently general way that also permits the use of alternative programming languages.

Chapter 2 demonstrates the systems of rate equations or first-order differential equations to deal with the regulation of individual chemical processes and sequences of such processes, at both the genetic and metabolic levels. Chapter 3 discusses the application of the theory of automata to the evaluation of the concept and principles of embryology, while Chapter 4 presents some relational cell models to study the metabolism-repair cellular systems. Chapter 5 looks into the concept and systems of a compartment. This book will prove useful to mathematical and cell biologists and researchers.
Download or read book Hysteresis written by José Carlos Dias and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of complex hysteresis problems has become increasingly important in recent years, since the hysteresis phenomenon affects significantly the decisions that have to be rendered in a wide range of real-world practical applications. For example, the so-called hysteresis effects may influence substantially some fields not directly related to the natural sciences such as finance, economy, or fiscal policy. In addition, such phenomenon is also typically present in many engineering and physics applications of interest such as in magnetism, spin-valve technology, semiconductors, surface physics, aeronautical and civil engineering aerodynamics, complex battery systems, biology, etc. This book focuses on the most recent attempts for modeling a diverse variety of complex hysteresis problems faced in economics, engineering, and physics. The chapters of this book provide a self-contained, rigorous, and clear treatment of the different types and sources of hysteresis under a large spectrum of applications. The book also highlights how stochastic control and other mathematical tools as well as econometric techniques can be applied for analyzing the complex properties of hysteresis problems. This authoritative book is a definitive guide on how to understand the newest designs for modeling hysteresis in highly complex systems and thus it will be an essential reading for graduate students and researchers in economics, engineering, and physics.

Book Synopsis Electrical Double Layers in Biology by : Konrad Bach
Download or read book Electrical Double Layers in Biology written by Konrad Bach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of apparently unrelated phenomena in biological systems (e.g., biopolymer aggregation, cell-cell interactions, ion transport across membranes) arise from the special properties of charged surfaces. A sym posium entitled "Electrical Double Layers in Biology", which took place at the Toronto meeting of the Electrochemical Society, 12-17 May 1985, focused on the common features of these phenomena. The papers presented at that symposium are collected here and they illustrate ways in which an under standing of electrical double layers can elucidate a problem in Biology. An example of this approach can be seen from the paper I presented on ion transport and excitation, where the "unusual" ion flows during nerve excitation are actually expected if one includes the effects of electrical double layers at membrane surfaces. Furthermore, the selectivity of the ion channels in these membranes can be better understood on this basis. Other presentations account for such observations as the changes in spacing between muscle proteins during contraction, the interactions of red cells to form rouleaux, the electrical properties of algal cell membranes, electrokinetic potentials during blood flow in arteries, etc. I trust that these papers will indicate the value of electrochemistry in the study of biological systems, an area of research usually called Bioelectrochemistry, and will encourage biologists to use these ideas when approaching related problems.
