(Greek Ιωαννης ο Δαμασκηνος) - reverend saint, one of the Church Fathers, theologian and hymnographer. He bore the hereditary nickname Mansur ("victorious"). His father Sergius (Ibn-Serjun) served at the caliph’s court in Damascus with the title of “great dogofet,” a tax collector. Subsequently, he was replaced by John himself. According to legend, he studied with Cosma (later of Mayumsk) with a captive monk from Calabria (also named Cosma). About 736 he was tonsured at the monastery of St. Sava near Jerusalem. Known as the largest systematizer of Christian dogma; he owns the fundamental work "The Source of Knowledge", which includes the philosophical ("Dialectics"), accusatory ("On heresies") and dogmatic ("Exact exposition of the Orthodox Faith") sections. During the period of iconoclasm, he advocated the veneration of icons, the author of “Three Defensive Words in Support of Icon veneration,” in which iconoclasm is understood as a heresy of heresy, and for the first time there is a distinction between “service”, befitting only to God, and “worship”, provided to created things, icons included. The Iconoclastic Council of 754 anathematized John four times, Church tradition ascribes to John a number of canons that changed the course of Matins, the compilation of the Octoichus and many troparia, kontakia and stichera(s) dedicated to various saints and festive events. The fundamental work "Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith" is the first systematic exposition of the Orthodox faith. The work of John of Damascus is still the main symbolic book of Orthodoxy, the main source of the foundations of Christian teaching for the Orthodox Church. This work is the statements of the Monk John concerning the general principles of faith, the Church, morality, morals, a consistent and harmonious examination of the doctrine of God, the Trinity, the creation of the world, angels and demons, visible nature and paradise, about man, his attributes and providence. St. John of Damascus is venerated on December 4 (17). Barth’s unique coupling together of anhypostasis and enhypostasis provides the ontological grounding, flexibility, and precision that so uniquely characterizes his Christology. As such, Barth expresses the Word became flesh as the revelation of God that flows out of the coalescence of Christ’s human nature with his divine nature as the mediation of reconciliation. This ontological dynamic provides the impetus for Barth’s critique of Chalcedon’s static definition of the union of divine and human natures in Christ from which Barth transitions to an active definition of these two natures. Not only does anhypostasis and enhypostasis explain the dynamic union between the divine and human natures in Christ, but also the dynamic union between Jesus Christ and his Church, which reaches its apex in the reconciliation of humanity with God, in Christ. The ontological foundation of anhypostasis and enhypostasis in Christ’s union with his Church explains the importance of the royal man in understanding genuine human nature, the exaltation of human nature, and the sanctification of human nature.

Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica. It seeks to describe the relationship between God and man and to explain how man’s reconciliation with the Divine is made possible at all through Christ. To this end, Aquinas cites proofs for the existence of God and outlines the activities and nature of God. Approximately one-half of the Summa Theologica then examines the nature and purpose of man. Finally, Aquinas devotes his attention to the nature of Christ and the role of the Sacraments in effecting a bridge between God and man. Within these broad topical boundaries, though, Aquinas examines the nature of God and man in exquisite detail. His examination includes questions of how angels act on bodies, the union of body and soul, the cause and remedies of anger, cursing, and the comparison of one sin with another. Aquinas is attempting to offer a truly universal and rational view of all existence. Thomas Aquinas, O.P. (1225 – 1274), also Thomas of Aquin or Aquino, was an Italian Dominican priest, and an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the "Doctor Angelicus", "Doctor Communis", and "Doctor Universalis". He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy was conceived in development or refutation of his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory.
