Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dimension theory of dynamical systems has progressively developed, especially over the last two decades, into an independent and extremely active field of research. Its main aim is to study the complexity of sets and measures that are invariant under the dynamics. In particular, it is essential to characterizing chaotic strange attractors. To date, some parts of the theory have either only been outlined, because they can be reduced to the case of maps, or are too technical for a wider audience. In this respect, the present monograph is intended to provide a comprehensive guide. Moreover, the text is self-contained and with the exception of some basic results in Chapters 3 and 4, all the results in the book include detailed proofs. The book is intended for researchers and graduate students specializing in dynamical systems who wish to have a sufficiently comprehensive view of the theory together with a working knowledge of its main techniques. The discussion of some open problems is also included in the hope that it may lead to further developments. Ideally, readers should have some familiarity with the basic notions and results of ergodic theory and hyperbolic dynamics at the level of an introductory course in the area, though the initial chapters also review all the necessary material.

Book excerpt: The origins of dynamical systems trace back to flows and differential equations, and this is a modern text and reference on dynamical systems in which continuous-time dynamics is primary. It addresses needs unmet by modern books on dynamical systems, which largely focus on discrete time. Students have lacked a useful introduction to flows, and researchers have difficulty finding references to cite for core results in the theory of flows. Even when these are known substantial diligence and consultation with experts is often needed to find them. This book presents the theory of flows from the topological, smooth, and measurable points of view. The first part introduces the general topological and ergodic theory of flows, and the second part presents the core theory of hyperbolic flows as well as a range of recent developments. Therefore, the book can be used both as a textbook - for either courses or self-study - and as a reference for students and researchers. There are a number of new results in the book, and many more are hard to locate elsewhere, often having appeared only in the original research literature. This book makes them all easily accessible and does so in the context of a comprehensive and coherent presentation of the theory of hyperbolic flows.

Entitled "On Some Aspects of the Theory of Anosov Systems", it uses ergodic theoretic techniques to study the distribution of periodic orbits of Anosov flows. The thesis introduces the "Margulis measure" and uses it to obtain a precise asymptotic formula for counting periodic orbits. This has an immediate application to counting closed geodesics on negatively curved manifolds. The thesis also contains asymptotic formulas for the number of lattice points on universal coverings of compact manifolds of negative curvature. The thesis is complemented by a survey by Richard Sharp, discussing more recent developments in the theory of periodic orbits for hyperbolic flows, including the results obtained in the light of Dolgopyat's breakthroughs on bounding transfer operators and rates of mixing.

Book excerpt: This volume collects a set of contributions by participants of the Workshop Partially hyperbolic dynamics, laminations, and Teichmuller flow held at the Fields Institute in Toronto in January 2006. The Workshop brought together several leading experts in two very active fields of contemporary dynamical systems theory: partially hyperbolic dynamics and Teichmuller dynamics. They are unified by ideas coming from the theory of laminations and foliations, dynamical hyperbolicity, and ergodic theory. These are the main themes of the current volume. The volume contains both surveys and research papers on non-uniform and partial hyperbolicity, on dominated splitting and beyond (in Part I), Teichmuller dynamics with applications to interval exchange transformations and on the topology of moduli spaces of quadratic differentials (in Part II), foliations and laminations and other miscellaneous papers (in Part III). Taken together these papers provide a snapshot of the state of the art in some of the most active topics at the crossroads between dynamical systems, smooth ergodic theory, geometry and topology, suitable for advanced graduate students and researchers.Non-specialists will find the extensive, in-depth surveys especially useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust chaos is defined by the absence of periodic windows and coexisting attractors in some neighborhoods in the parameter space of a dynamical system. This unique book explores the definition, sources, and roles of robust chaos. The book is written in a reasonably self-contained manner and aims to provide students and researchers with the necessary understanding of the subject. Most of the known results, experiments, and conjectures about chaos in general and about robust chaos in particular are collected here in a pedagogical form. Many examples of dynamical systems, ranging from purely mathematical to natural and social processes displaying robust chaos, are discussed in detail. At the end of each chapter is a set of exercises and open problems (more than 260 in the whole book) intended to reinforce the ideas and provide additional experiences for both readers and researchers in nonlinear science in general, and chaos theory in particular./a

In broad terms, the goal of Dynamics is to describe the long term evolution of systems for which an "infinitesimal" evolution rule is known. Examples and applications arise from all branches of science and technology, like physics, chemistry, economics, ecology, communications, biology, computer science, or meteorology, to mention just a few. These systems have in common the fact that each possible state may be described by a finite (or infinite) number of observable quantities, like position, velocity, temperature, concentration, population density, and the like. Thus, m the space of states (phase space) is a subset M of an Euclidean space M . Usually, there are some constraints between these quantities: for instance, for ideal gases pressure times volume must be proportional to temperature. Then the space M is often a manifold, an n-dimensional surface for some n

Book excerpt: Equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of correlated many-body systems are of growing interest in many areas of physics, including condensed matter, dense plasmas, nuclear matter and particles. The most powerful and general method which is equally applied to all these areas is given by quantum field theory. This book provides an overview of the basic ideas and concepts of the method of nonequilibrium Green''s functions, written by the leading experts and presented in a way accessible to non-specialists and graduate students. It is complemented by invited review papers on modern applications of the method to a variety of topics, such as optics and quantum transport in semiconductors; superconductivity; strong field effects, QCD, and state-of-the-art computational concepts OCo from Green''s functions to quantum Monte Carlo and time-dependent density functional theory. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: OCo Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive synthesis of mathematician Gregory Margulis’s research brings together leading experts to cover the breadth and diversity of disciplines Margulis’s work touches upon. This edited collection highlights the foundations and evolution of research by widely influential Fields Medalist Gregory Margulis. Margulis is unusual in the degree to which his solutions to particular problems have opened new vistas of mathematics; his ideas were central, for example, to developments that led to the recent Fields Medals of Elon Lindenstrauss and Maryam Mirzhakhani. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory introduces these areas, their development, their use in current research, and the connections between them. Divided into four broad sections—“Arithmeticity, Superrigidity, Normal Subgroups”; “Discrete Subgroups”; “Expanders, Representations, Spectral Theory”; and “Homogeneous Dynamics”—the chapters have all been written by the foremost experts on each topic with a view to making them accessible both to graduate students and to experts in other parts of mathematics. This was no simple feat: Margulis’s work stands out in part because of its depth, but also because it brings together ideas from different areas of mathematics. Few can be experts in all of these fields, and this diversity of ideas can make it challenging to enter Margulis’s area of research. Dynamics, Geometry, Number Theory provides one remedy to that challenge.
