Book Synopsis Ismaili Hymns from South Asia by : Zawahir Moir
Download or read book Ismaili Hymns from South Asia written by Zawahir Moir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aga Khans have long played a prominent part on the international stage, but much less tends to be understood about the most important group of their followers, the Khoja Ismailis of South Asia, who are now also settled in many other parts of the world. Even less is generally known about the hymns, called ginans, which have historically formed so central an element in the religious life and rituals of the Ismaili community. The principal aim of this anthology is to fill this gap by providing a sympathetic introduction to this still largely unexplored tradition of South Asian devotional literature, and to draw attention to the many features of remarkable interest which it contains.

Book Synopsis Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 1 by : Mark A. Lamport
Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 1 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the, central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a 60-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing--yet important--in accessible formats for the current literature.
Book Synopsis Identity in Conflict by : Johannes Aagaard
Download or read book Identity in Conflict written by Johannes Aagaard and published by Munshiram Manoharlal. This book was released on 1998 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: This book, while consisting of a number of articles written by various scholars in honour of Prof. Johannes Aagaard, concerns itself with the problem of occult as well as with the question of religious identity both at the macro and micro levels. The major portion of the book tries to investigate as to how the theme of the occult has been dealt with by both the revealed and non-revealed religions, and how it is manifesting itself currently over the world. The conclusion that most of the scholars arrive at concerning the occult is this: Occult is that which is manipulative in nature, i.e., it is power which destroys the individual's power of choice. In addition to it, occultism preaches divinization of man, and thereby is seen to be responsible in causing destruction to that which God has given rise to. It is this view of occultism which most of the scholars, who have written articles for this book, adhere to. The other theme with which the book concerns itself is as to how the particular can maintain its identity in the context of the universal. The universal is something abstract, whereas the particular is concrete. If the particular is allowed to merge its identity within what is known as the universal, then the particular ceases to exist. The particular can maintain its particularity to the extent it resists the universal. It is this conflict between the universal and the particular which is discussed in the context of as to how the national or local churches could relate themselves to what is called the universal church. Finally, the book focuses its attention on the question of mission, that is, should the church adopt the Peter principle or the Pauline method of dialogue in its mission activities? The conclusion that is arrived at tells us that it is the context or the situation which should determine the nature of the mission of the church. Since we are no more living in mono-cultural societies, it means that the mission of the church too must be varied and relative to the situation in which the mission activities are being carried out.
Download or read book Hymn to Old Age written by Hermann Hesse and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Steppenwolf and The Glass Bead Game, Hermann Hesse's Hymn to Old Age (Mit der Reife wird man immer jünger) is a collection of his most beautiful short works, including intimate memories of his final years. Hermann Hesse not only lived well into his eighties, but as a compulsive writer he also kept a record through his notebooks, letters, stories, poems and novels of his reactions to every phase of life that he passed through. This anthology traces his thoughts and experiences over several decades, capturing the problems, delights and very frequently the humour of old age. Shining through all these literary gems is a deep love of life, an acceptance of death, and an exhilaratingly youthfulness that Hesse himself would argue is characteristic only of the very young and the very old.

Book Synopsis Hymnal Companion to Sound the Bamboo by : I-to Loh
Download or read book Hymnal Companion to Sound the Bamboo written by I-to Loh and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, highly authoritative reference for all things related to Asian Christian hymnody, this tome examines the hymns of "Sound the Bamboo "in their historical, cultural, and spiritual contexts of 22 countries. Noted hymnologist I-to Loh has gathered and assembled his studies and experiences and that of many colleagues relating to the history and practice of hymnody in a part of the world that comprises many cultures and countries, not to mention spiritual influences. Few resources, especially ones accessible to Western readers, have delved into the Christian sacred music of Asia, and those that have tend to give only minimal examples, attempt to somehow combine all of Asia under a single umbrella, or examine only a few countries. This book, on the other hand, includes in-depth, all-encompassing information in addition to the usual background stories of texts and tunes of specific hymns in the related hymnal and biographies of their contributors.

Book Synopsis Ludwig Strauss: An Approach to His Bilingual “Parallel Poems” by : Julia Matveev
Download or read book Ludwig Strauss: An Approach to His Bilingual “Parallel Poems” written by Julia Matveev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of the bilingual “parallel poems” of Ludwig Strauss (Aachen 1892 ˗ Jerusalem 1953) created between 1934 and 1952 in Palestine/Israel and which exist in two variants, a Hebrew and a German version, one of which is the original and the other a self-translation. The aim of this study is to compare the versions and their interpretation based on Strauss’s theoretical essays on poetry and translation, his political writings and works of literary criticism. Special attention is paid to Strauss’s concept (linked with the idea of messianic redemption) of poetry as a “fore-image” of a future true community of men and as “the earthly expression of the Absolute” directed at interpreting divine revelation and its “translation” into human language. In examining Strauss’s experiments with self-translation, by which he aimed at establishing a dialogue between languages, and between people and nations, this study considers the two processes of translation: from divine speech into human language and from one human language into another.

Book excerpt: "[This book] is a contribution of considerable substance because it takes a holistic view of the field of folk music and the scholarship that has dealt with it." -- Bruno Nettl "... a praiseworthy combination of solid scholarship, penetrating discussion, and global relevance." -- Asian Folklore Studies "... successfully ties the history and development of folk music scholarship with contemporary concepts, issues, and shifts, and which treats varied folk musics of the world cultures within the rubric of folklore and ethnomusicology with subtle generalizations making sense to serious minds... " -- Folklore Forum "... [this book] challenges many carefully-nurtured sacred cows. Bohlman has executed an intellectual challenge of major significance by successfully organizing a welter of unruly data and ideas into a single, appropriately complex but coherent, system." -- Folk Music Journal Bohlman examines folk music as a genre of folklore from a broadly cross-cultural perspective and espouses a more expansive view of folk music, stressing its vitality in non-Western cultures as well as Western, in the present as well as the past.
Book Synopsis Musicians from a Different Shore by : Mari Yoshihara
Download or read book Musicians from a Different Shore written by Mari Yoshihara and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musicians of Asian descent enjoy unprecedented prominence in concert halls, conservatories, and classical music performance competitions. In the first book on the subject, Mari Yoshihara looks into the reasons for this phenomenon, starting with her own experience of learning to play piano in Japan at the age of three. Yoshihara shows how a confluence of culture, politics and commerce after the war made classical music a staple in middle-class households, established Yamaha as the world's largest producer of pianos and gave the Suzuki method of music training an international clientele. Soon, talented musicians from Japan, China and South Korea were flocking to the United States to study and establish careers, and Asian American families were enrolling toddlers in music classes. Against this historical backdrop, Yoshihara interviews Asian and Asian American musicians, such as Cho-Liang Lin, Margaret Leng Tan, Kent Nagano, who have taken various routes into classical music careers. They offer their views about the connections of race and culture and discuss whether the music is really as universal as many claim it to be. Their personal histories and Yoshihara's observations present a snapshot of today's dynamic and revived classical music scene.
