Book excerpt: This book provides an explicit description of the interface fracture behavior of FRP bonded concrete that is subjected to temperature and moisture effects. Extensive characterization of each constituent material is performed. Measured properties, in conjunction with peel and shear fracture load data, are used to calculate joint toughness by means of a newly developed tri-layer fracture model. Computed toughness, along with outputs of a fracture mode-mix analysis and a 3D moisture diffusion simulation are synergistically analyzed. Results suggest that moisture can physically change the property of a bond, and that of the adjoining materials. Joint toughness can degrade as much as 60% due to moisture ingress alone. Debonding mode will also shift from material decohesion to interface separation, which is rarely detected in short-term tests. Interface fracture analysis reveals why an initiated crack prefers to propagate along a debonded interface as opposed to bifurcating into concrete even though it appears to be the weakest link. This book aims to provide valuable test data and useful insights to structural engineers to design tougher retrofitted systems.

Results have shown that moisture affected debonding is a highly complex phenomenon that involves physical changes in the bond as well as in its constituent materials. In particular, moisture can initially enhance or reduce the interface fracture toughness, depending on the epoxy formulation being used. The toughness can, however, decrease by as much as 60% and become asymptotic upon reaching a certain moisture concentration threshold, which can be attained in as short as 2 weeks in case of peel fracture. While various debonding modes have been observed for dry specimens, epoxy/concrete interface separation, which has generally been considered an unlikely debonding mode, is observed consistently in all wet fracture specimens. Interface fracture analysis indicates that this newly discovered interfacial debonding mode is attributed to various interfacial material toughening or weakening mechanisms, and has also hinted on the possible interphase formation as a consequence of moisture diffusion. The new knowledge and results obtained from this research provide a basis for further analysis directions and for design of FRP bonded concrete systems against moisture affected debonding.

Book excerpt: This book is very useful in giving insight to the moisture related durability issues in bonding between Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and concrete. The experimental study is divided into two parts. The first part includes test mechanical properties of the resin and the concrete under the influence of water. In the second part, single lap shear bond test was conducted to compare the ultimate bond strength, failure modes, fracture energy, bond stress-slip curves with and without water immersion at different exposure periods. Finally, using the experimental results, a simple unified bond stress-slip relation was proposed ignoring the immersion duration and resin type which could address both non-immersion and immersion case. The proposed model showed good agreement with the experimentally observed local bond stress-slip relations for normal/high strength bond specimens with and without water effect.

Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

Book excerpt: The recently developed experimental fracture approach known as the Single Contoured-Cantilever Beam (SCCB) was used to characterize the interface bonds between concrete substrates and two varieties of FRP: glass and carbon (abbreviated GFRP and CFRP, respectively). Limited research has been performed concerning the FRP-concrete interface bond relative to three surface-roughness grades: low- (10 ?m), moderate- (? 10-50 ?m), and high- (50 ?m), to establish the optimal formation for bonding. By use of the SCCB approach, Mode I critical strain energy release rate results are measured and quantified. Finally, considering that a majority of externally strengthened FRP concrete structures involves bridges and girders that are subjected to repeated (as opposed to static) loads, a preliminary study is conducted on cyclically fatigued FRP-concrete interfaces under varying load-ratio and frequency effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inevitable flaws in the concrete-FRP interface govern plate debonding, and are not amenable to finite element analysis because the models require far more detail than will ever be available for the interface. This thesis describes a global-energy-balance based fracture-mechanics model for the debonding mechanism of externally bonded FRP plates attached to concrete beams. The model investigates the possible propagation of an existing interface crack by considering the energy balance of the beam during a small potential crack extension. The crack will extend if the energy release rate is greater than the interface fracture energy. Despite the fact that the crack-tip stress field is not amenable to precise analysis, its influence on the energy balance of the beam is insignificant because of the small volume of the 'uncertain zone', whereas the crack tip stress field would solely govern an analysis based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. The plate end and the locations where the widening of flexural and flexural/shear cracks cause interface flaws are the most likely locations for the initiation of debonding. The model analyses debonding that initiates from either location. With the small extension of the interface crack the compatibility between the beam and the FRP alters, consequently causing changes in the stress states, and hence the energy states, of zones in the vicinity of the crack. The change in energy state of a beam section upon interface crack extension is determined from a modified version of Branson's model. The strain state when the FRP is fully or partly debonded needs to be considered. The mechanics of stress transfer from the concrete to the FRP differs from that with conventional steel reinforcing bars for which the accuracy of the original Branson's model was validated. So, the moment-curvature model considers the force in the FRP as an external compressive force on the concrete beam section; the separation of the effects of the axial force and the moment is achieved by defining an equivalent centroid. Debonding will propagate in whichever of the concrete, adhesive, or at an interface that provides the least resistance; thus, the interface fracture energy is that of the weakest phase. Experimental observations confirm that the concrete substrate just above the interface is most likely to fail, in particular when the FRP manufacturer-recommended adhesives are used with appropriate curing procedures. Fracture energy of concrete is determined from Hillerborg's cohesive-crack-model-based experimental and approximate theoretical models. Premature debonding propagation within the adhesive layer can also be analysed but the knowledge of that fracture energy is required. The energy release rate is calculated for assumed interface crack lengths and locations, from which the critical state is determined when it equals the interface fracture energy. Comparisons with test data reported in the literature demonstrate that the model is accurate for all modes of plate debonding. The analysis gives the critical plate curtailment location and the critical crack length which trigger debonding at the plate end and in the high moment zone respectively. The model allows for the inclusion of all properties of the concrete beam, adhesive, FRP and the loading arrangement and hence can be used as an optimisation tool in design. The model also provides a framework for the design of more complex real -life applications, and highlights subjects that require further research.

Strengthening Reinforced Concrete (RC) members using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites through external bonding has emerged as a viable technique to retrofit/repair deteriorated infrastructures. The interface between the FRP and concrete plays a critical role in this technique. This study proposes a life-cycle analytical framework on the integrity and long-term durability of the FRP-concrete interface through a combined analytical, numerical, and experimental approach. A novel three-parameter elastic foundation model (3PEF) is first established to provide a general tool to analyze and evaluate the design of the FRP strengthening system. This model correctly predicts the location where debonding can occur. To simulate the interface stress redistribution and creep deformations accumulated during service life due to the strong time dependent features of the adhesive layer, linear viscoelastic analytical solutions are then developed for the FRP-strengthened RC beams. Small cracks usually exist within the FRP-concrete interface, making fracture mechanics a more appropriate tool to evaluate the integrity of the FRP-concrete interface. Analytical solutions of energy release rate (ERR) and its phase angle at the tip of a crack along the FRP-concrete interface are obtained. Under the synergistic effects of the service loads and environments species, these small cracks can grow slowly even if the ERR at the crack tip is lower than the critical value. This slow-crack growth process is known as environment-assisted subcritical cracking. A series of subcritical cracking testing are conducted using a wedge-driven testing to gain the ability to accurately predict the long-term durability of the FRP-concrete interface. It has been found that water, deicing salt and alkaline solutions can substantially reduce the ERR at the crack tip needed to drive the subcritical crack growth along the epoxy-concrete interface. Once the small cracks grow to the critical length, critical debonding will occur, leading to the premature failure of the structure. A nonlinear fracture mechanics model using a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) is finally developed to simulate this final failure phase of the FRP-concrete interface.

Several applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composites, nano-structured reinforcements, morphing structures, can be found in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The necessity of lightweight structures, smart and adaptive systems, high-level strength, have led both the academic research and the manufacturing development to a recurring employment of these materials. Many journal papers and technical notes have been published extensively over the last seventy years in international scientific journals of different engineering fields. For this reason, the establishment of this second edition of Mechanics of Composites International Conference has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the first edition occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA). MECHCOMP wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.
