Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hygiene of the Painters' Trade It is absolutely impossible to discover even approximately the proportion of painters in the United States who suffer injury from the use of lead paint. In the first place, we do not know how many painters there are who are exposed to this danger. The United States Census for 1900 gives painters, glaziers, and varnishers, but since the latter two classes of workmen are not exposed to lead paint this enumeration is valueless for our purpose. The Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators, and Paper Hangers also includes too many classes of workmen for their figures to be of use even for the organized branch of the trade, and of course they do not include the nonunion men.1 It is unnecessary to say that the sources of information as to lead poisoning among painters are even less trustworthy. This study is presented, therefore, as a tentative report only, a collection of what can be gleaned from the scanty sources available. In every case Where a statement is made, care will be taken to explain upon what foundations it rests and how nearly accurate it may be assumed to be. This is the most widespread of the lead-using trades, even more general in its distribution than printing or plumbing, for it is safe to say that there is no community so small that it does not include at least one painter.
