Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Diseases: A Manual of the Diseases of Warm Climates A manual on the diseases of warm climates, of handy size, and yet giving adequate information, has long been a want; for the exigencies of travel and of tropical life are, as a rule, incompatible with big volumes and large libraries. Book Synopsis The Principles of Hygiene as Applied to Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates (Classic Reprint) by : William Simpson
Download or read book The Principles of Hygiene as Applied to Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates (Classic Reprint) written by William Simpson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Hygiene as Applied to Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates Two reasons have induced me to publish my lectures on Hygiene and Public Health in an extended form. One is that I have been frequently asked to do so, and the other is that a greater interest in hygiene and sanitation is being manifested in the Tropics, than ever was the case before. There is the same spirit abroad in tropical regions in relation to sanitary matters as existed in the early Victorian era in England, and it is likely that a book of this kind will be useful to medical men and officials interested in guiding and controlling the move ment. There are many branches of the subject omitted or dealt with inadequately, but it was thought best to avoid delay, and not at present to issue a bulky volume. The hygiene of the Tropics and of warm climates is the same in principle as the hygiene of colder climates, but the differences of temperature, food, mode of life, environment, and civilization to be found in the Tropics modify to a considerable extent the conditions under which those principles have to be applied; consequently the practice of hygiene in the Tropics differs in many respects from that pursued in colder climates, and that which is suitable to the latter is not always suitable to the former. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 3 The exigencies Of tropical practice require most medical men to be practical sanitarians as well as clinicians. It is with this in View that in the present work, while due attention has been paid to the clinical features, treat ment and nursing of tropical diseases, special prominence has been given to their etiology and prevention. Owing to the recent advances in the knowledge Of the etiology of many tropical diseases the subject of their prophylaxis is a very promising one, since the general principles on which efficient and economical preventive measures should be based are now well understood. In the application of such general principles local conditions must be carefully considered, and thus in describing the various methods to be adopted those suitable for certain localities have been given as types. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Climate: Its Influence on Health and Disease, Serving as an Hygienical Guide Highly interesting as Rome is from whatever point of view we consider it, it is also worthy of marked attention with regard to its hygienic conditions, which form the object of these pages. Situated at a short distance from the sea, on a plain intersected by hills, bountifully supplied with good water, and enjoying a mild temperature, Rome has ever deserved the attention of the invalid, though, on the other hand it is surrounded by an almost deserted and uncultivated country, which at certain times exhales miasmata the influence of which extends to the city itself. The difficulty of determinating the climatic conditions of this remarkable place is yet greater when we consider the variety which Rome presents in every point, its existence during so many ages, the great changes which have taken place at different periods in its inhabitants, in the physical condition of the town and its various institutions.
