Book excerpt: Hydrothermal synthesis of transition metal oxide containing organic-inorganic hybrid materials has attracted great attention recently. Two novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials (4,4ʼ-bipy)3[HPW12O39] and [Cu(4,4ʼ-bipy)4][HPW12O40] were hydrothermally synthesized as green and purple crystals respectively, from the reaction of Na6[H2W12O40], CuCl2.2H2O, 4,4ʼ- bipyridine and H3PO4 in a 23 ml autoclave at 170°C for 72 hours. The compound (4,4ʼ-bipy)3[HPW12O39] crystallizes in the space group P21/n of the monoclinic system with four formula units in a cell with dimensions a = 13.503(3) Å, b = 26.726(5) Å, c =15.169(3) Å and V = 5397.3(19) Å3. [Cu(4,4ʼ-bipy)4][HPW12O40] crystallizes in the space group Pbcn of the tetragonal system with eight formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 20.236(4) Å, b = 25.635(5) Å, c = 20.236(4) Å; V = 10497(4) Å3 . Both of the compounds are Keggin polyoxometalate structures. (4,4ʼ-bipy)3[HPW12O39] contains free 4,4ʼ-bipy groups among the clusters while in [Cu(4,4ʼ-bipy)4][HPW12O40] 4,4ʼ-bipy ligands are coordinated to Cu2+ ions. A novel compound (H2NC4H8NH2)[(VO)2(PO4)2] was synthesized hydrothermally from the reaction of NaVO3, V2O5, ethylenediamine and H3PO4 at 170 C for 72 hours. The compound crystallizes in the space group P-1 of the trigonal system with five formula units in a cell of dimensions a= 6.3345(13) Å, b= 6.3353(13) Å, c= 15.940(3) Å, V=639.6(2) Å3. (H2NC4H8NH2)[(VO)2(PO4)2] displays a layered structure with protonated piperazine groups between layers. In addition to the novel compounds, several known compounds were synthesized as well. Blue crystals of (VO)(H2PO4)2 were obtained hydrothermally from the reaction of NaVO3, ethylenediamine and H3PO4 at 170C for 72 hours (C5NH6)4.5(H3O)1.5[P2W18O62] , a known compound also, was synthesized from the reaction of Na2WO4 .2H2O, CuCl2.2H2O, pyridine and H3PO4 at 170C for 72 hours.

In an attempt to synthesize vanadium oxides at low temperature, we were able to obtain needle shaped yellow crystals of PbVO3Cl. In the nature, there is a kombatite mineral, Pb14(VO4)2O9Cl4, with the same composition of elements. A new lead chlorovanadate, PbVO3Cl, was obtained from the reaction of NaVO3 and PbCl2 in aqueous solution of B(OH)3. The compound was prepared in an autoclave that was filled with aqueous solution of B(OH)3 and heated at 170oC for 3 days. The compound crystallizes in the space group Pnma of the orthorhombic system with formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 10.022(2)

In this thesis, two families of materials were explored as candidate cathode materials: the dirutile and rutile polymorphs of LiMnF4, and layered lithium-excess . . . Dirutile LiMnF4 was identified from high-throughput computation as a promising conversion cathode. The dirutile polymorph was synthesized through a new low temperature route, and the rutile polymorph was discovered upon mechanical milling. With simple synthesis and electrode preparation methods, both dirutile and rutile polymorphs of LiMnF4 showed electrochemical activity. Electron diffraction confirmed both polymorphs to convert upon lithiation along different reaction paths. As with other fluorides, specific capacity was strongly linked with processing conditions. The layered lithium-excess . . . compounds were designed from recent understanding of diffusion channels in lithium-excess materials. Increasing lithium content was found to improve both discharge capacity and capacity retention. Book excerpt: "In this thesis, lithium iron orthosilicate, Li2FeSiO4 (LFS), is synthesized, characterized, and evaluated electrochemically to investigate its capability as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries. Hydrothermal synthesis is employed to produce LFS particles with tailored properties aiming to meet the specifications of Li-ion cathodes. Compositional engineering via doping and non-stoichiometry is exploited on the pursuit of preferable electrochemical performance. Crystallization mechanism behind hydrothermal formation of LFS is revealed from time-resolved information on structure, composition and morphology via extensive ex situ characterizations. X-ray diffraction refinement combined with compositional analyses indicate a gradual transformation from amorphous hydrolysis products of Fe and Si to LFS crystallized in orthorhombic crystal system with space group Pmn21. Particle size can be varied effectively in the nanometer- to micrometer-range by changing the precursor concentrations, which is attributed to the role of Li activity in adjusting supersaturation and thus kinetics of nucleation and crystal growth. The addition of a complexing agent EDTA is utilized to regulate the activity of Fe, which consequently helps to avoid forming iron oxides and reduce Li-Fe antisite defects in LFS matrix. EDTA is also found to promote the formation of unique hollow mesocrystals that show promise in enhancing Li storage capacity. Electron microscopical characterizations suggest that after initial crystallization, LFS nanoparticles undergo self-assembly via nearly-oriented attachment and evolve to hollow mesocrystals following the Ostwald ripening rule.The viability of partial substituting into Fe several divalent cations in Pmn21 LFS is investigated using both first-principles calculations and hydrothermal synthesis. The formation of Co2+-doped Li2Fe0.94Co0.06SiO4 (CoLFS) is predicted to be energetically favorable, confirmed by successful hydrothermal synthesis. Electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations on pristine and cycled electrodes are applied to investigate the effect of Co doping on electrochemical properties of LFS. Substitution of Co in LFS is found to enable faster phase transformation to the electrochemically induced phase (inverse Pmn21) and forms a less resistant and more uniform fluorine-rich cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer that protects the bulk particle from detrimental reactions with the electrolyte. As a result, Co2+-doped LFS displays enhanced reversibility with 95% capacity retention after 50 cycles as compared to the undoped LFS with only 80% retention. In the meantime, Mg2+, although can be incorporated into LFS lattice, results in even worse capacity retention. Ni2+ or Sr2+-substituted Pmn21 LFS could not be synthesized due to their high formation energies compared to their competing solid phases. The effect of non-stoichiometry on crystal structure, electronic structure and Li transport kinetics of LFS is investigated through a combined experimental and computational study. Non-stoichiometric Pmn21 LFS with up to 8% Fe excess are successfully synthesized by controlled hydrothermal synthesis. In addition to the higher electron capacity from the accessible Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couple, the presence of excess Fe enhances the intercalation kinetics compared to the stoichiometric composition. The enhanced kinetics are rationalized by the introduction of the Fe_Li^• + V_Li^' defect pair and new electron conducting states from the creation of local Fe–O–Fe configurations. Moreover, the Fe-rich structure facilitates Fe migration to Li-site due to lower energy barrier than stoichiometric LFS, hence leading to faster phase transformation from Pmn21 towards the cycled inverse Pmn21. Galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show that Fe-rich LFS delivers higher capacity than the stoichiometric LFS from low to high current rates, for example 161.8 mAh g-1 versus 128.9 mAh g-1 at 0.02 C"--
