Book excerpt: A study of the hydrogeologic framework of the Little Spokane River Basin was conducted to identify and describe the principal hydrogeologic units in the study area, their hydraulic characteristics, and general directions of groundwater movement. The Little Spokane River Basin includes an area of 679 square miles in northeastern Washington State covering parts of Spokane, Stevens, and Pend Oreille Counties. The groundwater system consists of unconsolidated sedimentary deposits and isolated, remnant basalt layers overlying crystalline bedrock. In 1976, a water resources program for the Little Spokane River was adopted into rule by the State of Washington, setting instream flows for the river and closing its tributaries to further uses. Spokane County representatives are concerned about the effects that additional groundwater development within the basin might have on the Little Spokane River and on existing groundwater resources. Information provided by this study will be used in future investigations to evaluate the effects of potential increases in groundwater withdrawals on groundwater and surface-water resources in the basin. The hydrogeologic framework consists of eight hydrogeologic units: the Upper aquifer, Upper confining unit, Lower aquifers, Lower confining unit, Wanapum basalt unit, Latah unit, Grande Ronde basalt unit, and Bedrock. The Upper aquifer is composed mostly of sand and gravel and varies in thickness from 4 to 360 ft, with an average thickness of 70 ft.

Book excerpt: "The Spokane Indian Reservation is located in northeastern Washington state in the southwestern part of Stevens County. The trust area is bordered by the Spokane River on the south and Lake Roosevelt on the west, while Chamokane Creek forms the eastern boundary. Four major drainage basins lie on the Spokane Reservation, including Little Chamokane Creek in the eastern part, Blue Creek and Sand Creek in the central region, and the internally drained McCoy Lake basin in the west. Only a portion of the downstream portion of the Chamokane Creek basin is on the reservation. The definition of the geomorphology of the watersheds on the reservation is exclusively based on the topographic information on the 7.5 minute quadrangles sheets of the area. Drainage divides have been outlined, and the stream order of the creeks determined according to the surface water networks shown on the maps. The smallest characterized watersheds are second order basins. All the drainage basins and associated streams have been assigned a code and are entered into a database. Drainage basins and streams have been digitized to determine their area and length respectively, and based on this information drainage density, relief, and gradient of the watersheds have been calculated. Local climate data and river discharge records have also been compiled in a database. The Spokane Indian Reservation area can be subdivided into several groundwater provinces based on the geology. Aquifers are found in: a) Quaternary-age flood deposits, glacial outwash and lacustrine sediments in the Chamokane Creek valley, parts of the Little Chamokane Creek valley, in the McCoy Lake area, and along the Spokane and Columbia River; "b) Miocene-age basalts in the northeastern and the western part of the reservation; c) Eocene- age andesites in the McCoy Lake area; and d) crystalline rocks composed of Cretaceous and lower Tertiary intrusive rock, and Paleozoic/Precambrian metasediments, in the central part of the reservation. The determination of aquifer properties is based on the 1:100,000 scale geologic maps (Joseph, 1990a; 1990b; Waggoner, 1990a; 1990b), of the region and on information in water well log reports. Subsurface information in the logs, and the lithologic description included in the geologic maps delineate the aquifer systems on the reservation. A database has been compiled that lists the location, depth, water level, water-bearing strata, and well discharge rate for water wells on the reservation. A hydrogeologic characterization of each of the aquifer types has been made so that parameters for areas with little or no direct information can be extrapolated from similar regions with better known hydrogeologic properties. The extent of each individual aquifer has been delineated and an aquifer map has been compiled. The Spokane Indian Fish Hatchery is located in the eastern part of the reservation in the Chamokane Creek valley west of Ford, Washington. A high discharge well has been developed to supply the fish hatchery with a suitable volume of water for its generation, but during the last two years the discharge has become significantly lower than expected. To recommend a future course of action to increase the yield of groundwater at the site, the history of the operation of the well and the hatchery, and all pertinent hydrogeologic data have been gathered. A groundwater flow model is used to simulate the groundwater system in the vicinity of the well head. The results indicate that the discharge of the Metamooteles Springs is significantly influenced by the fish hatchery well."--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Lake Coeur d’Alene to its confluence with the Columbia, the Spokane River travels 111 miles of varied and often spectacular terrain—rural, urban, in places wild. The river has been a trading and gathering place for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. With bountiful trout, accessible swimming holes, and challenging rapids, it is a recreational magnet for residents and tourists alike. The Spokane also bears the legacy of industrial growth and remains caught amid interests competing over natural resources. The contributors to this collection profile this living river through personal reflection, history, science, and poetry. They bring a keen environmental awareness of resource scarcity, climate change, and cultural survival tied to the river’s fate.
