Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature survey digest of hydrogen-air combustion fundamentals presents data on flame temperature, burning velocity, quenching distance, flammability limits, ignition energy, flame stability, detonation, spontaneous ignition, and explosion limits. The data are assessed, recommended values are given, and relations among various combustion properties are discussed. New material presented includes: theoretical treatment of variation in spontaneous ignition lag with temperature, pressure, and composition, based on reaction kinetics of hydrogen-air composition range for 0.01 to 100 atmospheres and initial temperatures of 0 degrees to 1400 degrees k.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new apparatus for the study of bunsen burner flames at pressures up to 100 atmoshperes is described. With hydrogen-oxygen mixtures the flames at elevated pressures are always turbulent unless burner tubes with an inner diameter much smaller than 0.03 cm are used. The flash-back conditions of turbulent hydrogen-oxygen flames at atmospheric pressure and at 14.6 atmospheres are given by the critical velocity gradient at the wall of the burner tube. The temperature of the burner tip has a large effect on the flash-back tendency of the flame. For tubulent flames the critical flash-back gradient is larger than for laminar flames. The limit between stable flame and flash-back was found to be very sharp. From measurements of the flame pressures and from photographs of the flame cones it is concluded that the burning velocity of turbulent flames to not larger than that of laminar flames. Depending on mixture ratio the burning velocities of hydrogen-oxygen flames at 14.6 atmospheres are 2 to 3 times as large as those of atmospheric flames. From a theoretical consideration it is concluded that the burning velocities of hydrogen-oxygen flames increase with pressure because the flame temperatures increase with pressure, and thus also the heat conduction from the burning zone into the unburned gas. The intensity of the emission spectrum of hydrogen-oxygen flames recorded with a 21 ft. grating spectrograph is greatly increased with pressure. The iso-intensity method is used for the measurement of flame temperatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion, Flames, and Explosions of Gases, Second Edition focuses on the processes, methodologies, and reactions involved in combustion phenomena. The publication first offers information on theoretical foundations, reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, and reaction between carbon monoxide and oxygen. Discussions focus on the fundamentals of reaction kinetics, elementary and complex reactions in gases, thermal reaction, and combined hydrogen-carbon monoxide-oxygen reaction. The text then elaborates on the reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen and combustion waves in laminar flow. The manuscript tackles combustion waves in turbulent flow and air entrainment and burning of jets of fuel gases. Topics include effect of turbulence spectrum and turbulent wrinkling on combustion wave propagation; ignition of high-velocity streams by hot solid bodies; burners with primary air entrainment; and description of jet flames. The book then takes a look at detonation waves in gases; emission spectra, ionization, and electric-field effects in flames; and methods of flame photography and pressure recording. The publication is a valuable reference for readers interested in combustion phenomena.

But this finite resource is also responsible for 80 percent of the CO2 emissions from power production, and its continued use will require improved processing techniques that are less damaging to the environment and l

Book excerpt: This book presents new data on combustion processes for practical applications, discussing fire safety issues in the development of flame arresters and the use of noble metals in hydrogen recombiners for nuclear power plants. It establishes the basic principles of production of metal nanostructures, namely nanopowders of metals and compact products made of them, with the preservation of the unique properties of nanoproducts.
