Hydrogen attack on steels is manifest as decarburization, intergranular fissuring, or blistering. These conditions result in lowered tensile strength, ductility, and impact strength. The reaction of hydrogen with iron carbide to form methane is probably the most important chemical reaction involved in the attack on steel by hydrogen. Attack of steel at elevated temperatures and pressures is limited or prevented by the following measures: (1) use of steel alloyed with strong carbide-forming elements, (2) use of liners of resistant alloy steels, and (3) substitution of resistant nonferrous alloys.

The 14 keV gamma-rays were used for observation, penetrating a cadmium plating that slowed out-diffusion of the hydrogen. Standard 'around-the-corner' backscatter geometry was used. AISI 4340 steel, heat treated to strength levels of 260 - 280 ksi was used. Samples were in the form of C-rings with a notch located to permit destructive testing as a cross-check. Computer fitting was used to reduce the data. No correlation was observed between embrittled and unembrittled specimens. All variations in the data were within the standard deviation observed. Book excerpt: Dopper broadening measurements of the gamma-ray spectra produced by positron annihilation have been made on an AISI 4340 (Unified Numbering System [UNS] G43400) steel as a function of both isochronal tempering over the temperature range of 150 to 700°C and isothermal tempering at 250°C for times ranging from 1 to 1100 min. Changes in the positron annihilation line shape parameter S are correlated with the corresponding structural transformations that accompany tempering of the as-quenched steel. Of particular significance is the increase in the S parameter in the temper embrittlement regime. This increase in S parameter is postulated to be related to the precipitation of a transition iron carbide that alters the defect structure of the surrounding ferrite phase.
