Book excerpt: A brief survey is made on the basic principles, current designs and economic advantages of salinity-gradient solar ponds as solar collectors and reservoirs. Solar ponds are well-suited for various AIPH (agricultural and industrial process heat) applications, and as annual storage devices for space heating and cooling. The benefit of an efficient pond is demonstrated via a preliminary economic analysis which suggests the idea of energy farming as a profitable alternative for land usage in the face of rising fuel cost. The economy and reliability of solar-pond operation depend crucially on the stability of the nonconvective gradient zone against disturbances such as generated by a severe weather condition. Attention is focused on the subject of stability, and pertinent existing results are summarized and discussed. Details of the derivation of three-dimensional stability criteria for thermohaline convection with linear gradients are presented. Ten key questions pertaining to stability are posed, whose answers must be sought through extensive analytical and numerical studies. Possible methods of approach toward enhancing solar-pond stability are also discussed. For the numerical studies of pond behavior and stability characteristics, a double-diffusive convection model is proposed. The model can be constructed by extending the three-dimensional thermohydrodynamic computer code COMMIX-SA, following the necessary steps outlined; computational plans are described. Similarities exist between the halothermocline and the thermocline storage systems, and an extended COMMIX-SA will be a valuable tool for the investigation of both.

Book excerpt: The diffusion equation for salt gradient solar ponds has been modified to include the Soret effect (a thermal cross-effect due to the temperature gradient). The contribution of the Soret effect to the diffusion flux of salt is shown to be on the order of 4% in the winter and 28% in the summer for the UNM NaCl solar pond. The traditional stability criterion for solar ponds remains practically unchanged by the Soret effect. However, the contribution of non-constant properties (diffusion coefficient, thermal diffusivity and viscosity) - which have been neglected so far - seems to be significant. Saturated solar ponds are described by a system of differential equations which include the Soret effect, the formation and redissolving of crystals. The analytical solutions of this system are given for the steady-state and constant properties. A laboratory experiment using KNO/sub 3/ confirms the existence of a stable saturated gradient. Temperatures of up to 90/sup 0/C and temperature gradients of up to 2/sup 0/C/cm were used in the experiment without any sign of convective layers. A saturated gradient at steady state includes a super saturated region close to the surface which results in the fallout of crystals in that region. The diffusion flux of salt is thus balanced by a flux of crystals downwards and the net flux of salt is zero in a steady state.

In Libya, the demand for freshwater is soaring, but the supply is limited. Freshwater is intrinsically linked to energy where the paramount consideration for its sustainability is the amount of energy required to guarantee sufficient supplies of freshwater through seawater-desalination. This emphasises two paramount needs that should be promptly sought as a national priority, first stringent water conservation, and second the employment of sustainable energy sources to power desalination. Salinity Gradient Solar Pond (SGSP) can be one of a mix of technologies leading to a future based on sustainable energy. This study models the potential and operation of SGSPs as a source of thermal energy in Libya. The study makes an original contribution to knowledge by explaining the essence (when, how,and where) of the SGSP operational instability. It also investigates the optimum zone thicknesses ratio of the three different salinity zones constituting the SGSP; Upper Convective Zone (UCZ), middle Non-Convective Zone (NCZ), and Lower Convective Zone (LCZ) while implementing the double-diffusive convection (DDC) phenomenon. One-dimensional and two-dimensional numerical studies are conducted. The results indicate that SGSP has the potential to provide hot saline-water at a temperature exceeding 70°C for multi-effect desalination thermal vapour compression units which require a minimum top brine temperature of 60 - 65°C. At a SGSP thermal output of 55 W m−2, 46.8 m2 of land is required for the production of 1 m3 per day of distillate. The two-dimensional study explains the nature of the operational instability where the occurrence and expansion of convective cells at the interfaces of the NCZ due to DDC leads to instability. This study also gathered evidence on the effect of buoyancy ratio. Salt concentration differences separating the UCZ and the LCZ should be sustained at 300 kg m−3 to maintain stability. The optimum zone thicknesses for an average SGSP of 2 m height are 0.4, 1.2, and 0.4 meters for the UCZ, the NCZ, and the LCZ, respectively.

Book excerpt: The primary reference for the modeling of hydrodynamics and water quality in rivers, lake, estuaries, coastal waters, and wetlands This comprehensive text perfectly illustrates the principles, basic processes, mathematical descriptions, case studies, and practical applications associated with surface waters. It focuses on solving practical problems in rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters, and wetlands. Most of the theories and technical approaches presented within have been implemented in mathematical models and applied to solve practical problems. Throughout the book, case studies are presented to demonstrate how the basic theories and technical approaches are implemented into models, and how these models are applied to solve practical environmental/water resources problems. This new edition of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality: Modeling Rivers, Lakes, and Estuaries has been updated with more than 40% new information. It features several new chapters, including one devoted to shallow water processes in wetlands as well as another focused on extreme value theory and environmental risk analysis. It is also supplemented with a new website that provides files needed for sample applications, such as source codes, executable codes, input files, output files, model manuals, reports, technical notes, and utility programs. This new edition of the book: Includes more than 120 new/updated figures and 450 references Covers state-of-the-art hydrodynamics, sediment transport, toxics fate and transport, and water quality in surface waters Provides essential and updated information on mathematical models Focuses on how to solve practical problems in surface waters—presenting basic theories and technical approaches so that mathematical models can be understood and applied to simulate processes in surface waters Hailed as “a great addition to any university library” by the Journal of the American Water Resources Association (July 2009), Hydrodynamics and Water Quality, Second Edition is an essential reference for practicing engineers, scientists, and water resource managers worldwide.

Solar technologies already provide energy for heat, light, hot water, electricity, and cooling for homes, businesses, and industry. Because solar energy only accounts for one-tenth of a percent of primary energy demand, relatively small increases in market penetration can lead to very rapid growth rates in the industryâ??which is exactly what has been projected for coming years as the world moves away from carbon-based energy production. Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Third Edition provides the latest thinking and practices for engineering solar technologies and using them in various markets. This Third Edition of the acknowledged leading book on solar engineering features: Complete coverage of basic theory, systems design, and applications Updated material on such cutting-edge topics as photovoltaics and wind power systems New homework problems and exercises
