Book excerpt: Walter Pater poses to criticism the challenge of how to approach a writer who is neither entirely a novelist, entirely a critic, nor entirely a historian, but each by turn. This book demonstrates the unity of all Pater's roles through the crucial concept of 'linguistic consciousness'. This idea enables the author, in a manner unique within contemporary criticism, to combine phenomenological and post-structural methodologies - that is to say, attention to details of language as registers of qualities of mind with a more recent linguistic and historical emphasis. The result is an attempt to present a full autobiography of the linguistic consciousness of Walter Pater. This requires that the author observe Pater from the inside, that he trace, even replicate, the motions of Pater's consciousness. the author shows how fragments of language, specific images and phrases, link up by means of figurative and rhetorical echoes into patterns that reveal a topographic, rather than a narrative or conceptual, structure as the 'under-texture' of Pater's writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Double Homicide offers an autobiographical work in which the author seeks to relay a journal of memories of unexplained events, and deaths related to sorcery practices in and around his home village, Bossou in the Ivory Coast. He opens with an introduction of the disguised crimes in which the victims do not see their assailants, as opposed to the open crime where the criminal uses a weapon. He asserts that God made some of his power available to human, to be utilized positively and creatively for the good of all. It was not meant to be used negatively and deviously by associating it with evil spirits, and transforming it into sorcery, and witchcraft, and using it to kill and destroy others' properties and blessings like it is today. He sites bibliographical references from the book of Genesis to back his idea that, evil that we are victims of, or the practice of sorcery that we are experiencing today, is not new; it all evolved when mankind fell into sin after being induced into it by the devil, taking advantage of man's naivete; then corrupting the world henseforth. "But there is hope, and I am optimistic that, in the name of Jesus, the world will get back its mormacy" He continues and explains how a driver named Goubo was thwarted in his marriage plans with the chief's daughter by unseen forces and mistaken events. The story unfolds and shows how Kolongou, one of the chief's sons was sacrificed, and sent to go hunting with Goubo. Kolongou was prepared mystically to be transformed into a deer once in the bush, and be killed, such as; using a small fish to catch a trout. In the Double Homicide, the author's tale reveals that death, no matter where and how it occurs, is ever perceived naturally as the end of life cycle. His descriptions of rituals, ceremonies, and ideologies, central to West African Culture, are designed to augment the scope and tone of this chronicle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR From Pulitzer Prize finalist Elliott Currie comes a devastating exploration of the extreme levels of violence afflicting Black communities, and a blueprint for addressing the crisis About 170,000 Black Americans have died in homicides just since the year 2000. Violence takes more years of life from Black men than cancer, stroke, and diabetes combined; a young Black man in the United States has a fifteen times greater chance of dying from violence than his white counterpart. Even Black women suffer violent death at a higher rate than white men, despite homicide’s usual gender patterns. Yet while the country has been rightly outraged by the recent spate of police killings of Black Americans, the shocking amount of “everyday” violence that plagues African American communities receives far less attention, and has nearly disappeared as a target of public policy. As acclaimed criminologist Elliott Currie makes clear, this pervasive violence is a direct result of the continuing social and economic marginalization of many Black communities in America. Those conditions help perpetuate a level of preventable trauma and needless suffering that has no counterpart anywhere in the developed world. Compelling and accessible, drawing on a rich array of both classic and contemporary research, A Peculiar Indifference describes the dimensions and consequences of this enduring emergency, explains its causes, and offers an urgent plea for long-overdue social action to end it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By investigating thousands of descriptions of epidemics reaching back before the fifth-century-BCE Plague of Athens to the distrust and violence that erupted with Ebola in 2014, Epidemics challenges a dominant hypothesis in the study of epidemics, that invariably across time and space, epidemics provoked hatred, blaming of the 'other', and victimizing bearers of epidemic diseases, particularly when diseases were mysterious, without known cures or preventive measures, as with AIDS during the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, scholars and public intellectuals, especially post-AIDS, have missed a fundamental aspect of the history of epidemics. Instead of sparking hatred and blame, this study traces epidemics' socio-psychological consequences across time and discovers a radically different picture: that epidemic diseases have more often unified societies across class, race, ethnicity, and religion, spurring self-sacrifice and compassion.
