Book excerpt: Can a hurricane threatening the Georgia coast reunite the once high school sweethearts? With her disgruntled teenage daughter in tow, Anna, a recently divorced paramedic, returns to Magnolia Hill to heal and to prove to herself she is capable of providing for them on her own. Soon her old small-town life she had left behind catches up with her-but not all in a good way. Only by facing her fears and the people who've told her she's not worthy can she make room in her heart to love again. Two years after a car accident that claimed his wife, Chief Meteorologist Jason Morrison is still grieving. However, when he collides with Anna at a community event, memories of his senior year resurface, and he can't get her out of his mind. He invites her to tag along on an opportunity of a lifetime-to cover Hurricane Gerard's landfall at Tybee Island-just as friends. Nothing ever goes as planned, though. Spending time together rekindles the familiar feelings they had for each other when they dated in high school nearly two decades ago. But they can't be together. Too much has changed. He's made a sacred promise. She has to learn to trust again. Will they find a way? If you enjoy clean romances with charming characters and a small-town feel, stories about second chances, and the excitement of stormy weather, then you'll love Lexie Nicholas's debut novel.

Book excerpt: "Sea level is rising, and yet Americans continue to develop beaches with little regard. In this volume, a group of coastal geologists discusses the startling saga of ten U.S. East and Gulf Coast shoreline communities (plus Puerto Rico and some western Europe strands) and the problems created by their inevitable interaction with natural processes in this highly dynamic geologic environment. The authors discuss the geologic context of the hazards of each site as the history of societal responses and their environmental impacts. Response to the natural coastal processes that threaten lives and buildings is carried out in a context of local, state and national politics with fixed short-term engineering solutions (beach replenishment, seawalls) generally favored over longer-term approaches (moving back, prohibition of seawalls). This essential GSA Special Paper foreshadows the impending rise of sea level and the myriad of shoreline responses and political controversies it will provoke."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of a task force review of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Shoreline Protection and Beach Erosion Control Program. The assessment of the program was in response to Fiscal Year 1994 "Passback Language" from the Office of Management and Budget. The report responds to concerns about the shoreline protection program, particularly concerning costs, benefits, environmental effects and the related influences on shoreline development. The study was performed in two phases. The initial phase was completed in January 1994 and published as IWR Report 94-PS-1, Shoreline Protection and Beach Erosion Control Study. Phase I: Cost Comparison of Shoreline Protection Projects of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The purpose of the first phase report was to provide early input to the Office of the Management and Budget regarding the scope and cost of Federal Civil Works shore protection. This second and final phase of the study incorporates: additional analysis of project costs and sand emplacements; and overview of risk management in the coastal zone; a comparison of actual versus anticipated benefits; a discussion on environmental considerations; and an analysis of any induced development effects associated with the Federal shore protection and beach erosion control program. Also, included is a summary of study findings and conclusions. The basis of this report and the data compiled by the task force reflects conditions as of 1 July 1993.

Book excerpt: From killer storms to their implications for the insurance premiums of U.S. residents, this much-awaited update explores the ecological, social, and economic consequences of hurricanes and their effects on both coastal and inland areas. In September 1776 the so-called "Hurricane of Independence" hit Canada and the northeastern United States, leading to 4,170 deaths. In 1900 around 8,000 perished in the Galveston Hurricane and the resulting tidal surge. Coastal defenses, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures have improved enormously. However, hurricanes still pose a potentially devastating threat to life and property, especially in coastal regions of the United States and the Caribbean. What causes these extreme storms? How can we best defend ourselves? Hurricanes: A Reference Handbook explores the historical, ecological, economic, and social dimensions of hurricanes in North America. Synthesizing literature from a wide range of authoritative sources, this book is an invaluable guide to hurricanes and their impact and is essential reading for students, scientists, mariners, and coastal residents alike.

Book excerpt: This report was prepared as an independent assessment of the coastal physical processes occurring along Brevard County, Florida. The study was conducted for the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, in its involvement with the lawsuit Applegate et al. versus the United States of America. Long-term regional beach change is evaluated by analysis of survey data on shoreline position, bathymetry, and beach profiles taken through time. In addition, analysis is specifically made for the properties of two test plaintiffs selected by the Court. Estimates of beach and dune erosion, if any, are calculated for the two test plaintiffs from date of purchase of the properties. Erosion of the beaches and dunes, principally attributed to storms, was estimated at the properties of the two test plaintiffs by compiling storm data and calculating beach and dune change with a numerical model.
