Book Synopsis Human Rights and Statistics by : Thomas B. Jabine
Download or read book Human Rights and Statistics written by Thomas B. Jabine and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective human rights advocacy and research require the use of statistics, carefully collected and objectively analyzed and presented, using the best techniques available. Statistics that lack credibility are of little value. Those that can be defended against critics can be effective in throwing the light on violations and promoting the observance of human rights for all. The contributors to this book, including experts in political science, public health, law, forensic pathology, and statistics, illustrate good statistical practice in the field of human rights and show the importance of collaboration between statisticians and other professionals. The treatment is largely nonmathematical, and the examples provide broad coverage of all features of the collection and use of statistical data on human rights violations. For readers who would like to do their own analyses, an extensive guide to human rights data sources is included. This book is the first to describe and summarize important issues associated with the collection and uses of human rights statistics.

Book excerpt: The 1994 conference of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries drew together an exceptional group of invited speakers and contributed papers. Speakers came from every part of Europe, from N. America, and even from Australia, and almost all the papers presented are collected in this volume. They represent an important summary of the state of the art in libraries and information services in the medical and health areas and are a rich source of advice, assistance and information for everyone working in related fields. Most of the themes concentrate on the important growth areas of the profession: computer-based information services, networking (especially the Internet), and CD-ROMs. More general topics are not ignored, and the book contains many interesting contributions on identifying the needs of library users and evaluating how well these are being met. There is also an important section on the history of medicine.
Book Synopsis Protecting Human Rights in Africa by : Claude Emerson Welch
Download or read book Protecting Human Rights in Africa written by Claude Emerson Welch and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book for 1996 Since the 1950s, sub-Saharan Africa has been the site of profound political changes initiated by ascendant nationalism and rapid decolonization. With this new beginning came fresh challenges involving many crucial aspects of human rights: self-determination; civil and political rights, including government legitimacy; military involvement in African politics; and unfulfilled basic needs that have cried out for economic and social development. Protecting Human Rights in Africa is the first major comparative study of the way human rights NGOs have brought revolutionary change south of the Sahara. Governments are both the most important protectors and abusers of human rights, while NGOs have become the most effective detectives in discovering abuses and the most active advocates in seeking solutions.

Book Synopsis Human Rights and Technological Change by : Michael Homberg
Download or read book Human Rights and Technological Change written by Michael Homberg and published by Wallstein Verlag. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. _____ The volume analyses the ambivalent relationship between human rights and modern technologies since 1945. Tools of suppression or agents of emancipation? Modern technologies have become a major subject of human rights policy. Surveillance technology, the military use of drones, and the possibilities of Big Data analysis pose new challenges for the international human rights movement. At the same time, these techniques offer new ways to document and denounce violations of human rights and to promote mass mobilization. The volume analyses this ambivalent relationship between human rights and technological change in a historical perspective. Showing how the spread of modern technologies both challenged and served human rights policies, the volume focuses on four key areas of technological change: 1) development politics, infrastructures and large technical systems, 2) population politics and demographical knowledge, 3) media cultures and communication technologies, and 4) the societal impact of computerization. By sketching these debates since 1945, the volume adds a historical perspective to current debates about the political and ethical challenges of new technological developments. The volume is published entirely in English.
