Book Synopsis Modeling Magnetospheric Plasma by : T. E. Moore
Download or read book Modeling Magnetospheric Plasma written by T. E. Moore and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1988 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 44. Existing models of the plasma distribution and dynamics in magnetosphere / ionosphere systems form a patchwork quilt of different techniques and boundaries chosen to define tractable problems. With increasing sophistication in both observational and modeling techniques has come the desire to overcome these limitations and strive for a more unified description of these systems. On the observational side, we have recently acquired routine access to diagnostic information on the lowest energy bulk plasma, completing our view of the plasma and making possible comparisons with magnetohydrodynamic calculations of plasma moments. On the theoretical side, rising computational capabilities and shrewdly designed computational techniques have permitted the first attacks on the global structure of the magnetosphere. Similar advances in the modeling of neutral atmospheric circulation suggest an emergent capability to globally treat the coupling between plasma and neutral gases. Simultaneously, computer simulation has proven to be a very useful tool for understanding magnetospheric behaviors on smaller space and time scales.

Book Synopsis Space Plasmas by : Maha Ashour-Abdalla
Download or read book Space Plasmas written by Maha Ashour-Abdalla and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1995-01-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 86. This volume addresses the issue of achieving agreement between space observations and that body of plasma theory that attempts to account for the interrelations of plasma behavior and electromagnetic inhomogeneities and fluctuations. It is difficult to assign a single name to this area of research, because most of the terms that might be used have specific and limiting technical connotations. However, though a single name has not yet been found, we can say that the space plasma phenomena considered in this volume may all be characterized as fluctuating, nonequilibrium, or turbulent, and that the processes which play important roles in determining the plasma behavior are stochastic, quasilinear, nonlinear, inhomogeneous, or nonlocal.

Book excerpt: The 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science was held as a joint conference with the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley from June 20-22, 1988. With the encouragement and support of the SES, we decided to organize a symposium in honor of A. C. Eringen: the founding president of the Society of Engineering Science who provided pioneering leadership during the critical first decade of the Society's existence. We felt that there was no better way to do this than with a Symposium on Engineering Science -- the field that A. C. Eringen has devoted his life to. Professor Eringen had the foresight, even in his own early work, to see the need for an intimate amalgamation of engineering and science (transcending the bounds of the traditional engineering disciplines) to address unsolved problems of technological importance. Sustained by the belief that there was the need to provide a forum for researchers who had embraced this broader interdisciplinary approach, Professor Eringen founded the Society of Engineering Science and the International Journal of Engineering Science in 1963. Since that time, he has made countless contributions to the advancement of engineering science through his research, educational and organizational activities. The participants in the Symposium were former students and colleagues of Professor Eringen who have been strongly influenced by his professional activities and research in engineering science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to the principles of radio sounding, a description of advances in hardware and data systems, and data processing and analysis software, including electron density profile inversions, for data from modern digital ionospheric sounders, especially the digisondes, and digisonde operation instructions. It is the most comprehensive documentation for digisondes and can serve as a master reference source for digisonde users. It also provides an overview of the international research activities using radio sounding and presents the newest scientific results from the Radio Plasma Imager on NASA’s IMAGE satellite and related plasma physics subjects.
