Book excerpt: This is a highly illustrated book that looks deeply into the myths, legends and folk-tales of dragons. The first part of the book examines twenty-two accounts of dragons in Somerset, such as the 'Gurt-Vurm' of Shervage Wood, who, when cut in half by a woodsman, had the half with the fire-breathing hewad running off to Kingston St. Mary. In the next part of the book dragon stories are examined from all continents, in some cases going back into far antiquity. The Somerset dragons are then compared with dragons from around the World, under different headings such as: - eats people - has two legs - has many heads - kills hero - etc. to see if the Somerset beasts are part of a World-wide pattern. Finally, the meaning behind the dragon stories and what they reveal about Man's psyche and understanding of Life is examined. We look at such things as a possible race memory of dinosaurs, the serpent Satan in the Bible, and Jung's theories of Man's symbols and archetypes in the collective unconscious. The book contains numerous photos, drawings, map and timeline. A reading delight for young and old alike, It would make an ideal Christmas or birthday present

Defending people from monsters simply doesn't pay well enough to make it a good career move. As for hunting dragons... well, the money is usually good, but the job really bites. A group of five professional heroes goes into the lair of the dragon. Who will win? Spoiler: The dragon. But that's only the first chapter. It turns out killing a hero might make him even more determined. Sometimes, heroes are never more dangerous than when they're dead!

Book excerpt: An informative springboard from which to dive deep into the rich and illustrious heritage of the county steeped in the legend of King Arthur. Every inch of legendary Somerset is imbued with history, from the towns of Dunster and Taunton in the west, to those of Shepton Mallet and Frome in the east; while also contained within its county boundaries are the cities of Bath and Wells and the mystical and magical Isle of Avalon: Glastonbury. The county, located in southwest England and part of the Ancient Kingdom of Wessex, has played a significant role in many of the nation’s most formative events. These include the Roman occupation, Alfred the Great’s rise to power, the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion. And all this epoch-making activity has been played out against a landscape of dramatic and breathtaking beauty, from vast tracts of land such as Exmoor, hill ranges such as Mendip and Blackdown and an abundance of incredible rivers, lakes and streams; many situated within the famous Somerset Levels. Wordsworth, Coleridge and Austen, among many others, have immortalized the county in literature, while everyone from the Celts, Cavaliers and Saxons, to the Roundheads, Romans and rebels have fought over its sought-after resources. The authors, both living in Somerset, guide you on a fascinating and illuminating trip into the past of this most historical and legendary of counties, which boasts among its attractions the last battle fought upon English soil, the scene of the Bloody Assizes and the final resting place of King Arthur.

Book excerpt: When you are in Somerset you are never far from mysterious caverns, whispering woods, hidden valleys and places which can't decide whether they are seascapes or landscapes. The ancient Kings Arthur and Alfred hid amongst Somerset's secret waterways, waging the wars and making treaties that forged Britain's history. Outlaws and highwaymen lived on the wildest of moors that plummet into the sea. Ordinary people farmed the land and fished the waters alongside the Little People, the Fair Folk, the fairies and goblins that were as tricksy and unchancy to meet as any smuggler... In this collection, professional storyteller Sharon Jacksties has selected and reworked tales for children aged 7–11 to discover.

Book excerpt: Once a year on Dragon Day the fabled Dragon Gate is raised to let a sea dragon pass from the Southern Wastes into the Sabian Sea. There, it will be hunted by the Storm Lords, a fellowship of powerful water-mages who rule an empire called the Storm Isles. Alas, this year someone forgot to tell the dragon which is the hunter and which the hunted. Emira Imerle Polivar is coming to the end of her tenure as leader of the Storm Lords. She has no intention of standing down graciously. She instructs an order of priests called the Chameleons to infiltrate a citadel housing the mechanism that controls the Dragon Gate to prevent the gate from being lowered after it has been raised on Dragon Day. Imerle hopes the dozens of dragons thus unleashed on the Sabian Sea will eliminate her rivals while she launches an attack on the Storm Lord capital, Olaire, to secure her grip on power. But Imerle is not the only one intent on destroying the Storm Lord dynasty. As the Storm Lords assemble in Olaire in answer to a mysterious summons, they become the targets of assassins working for an unknown enemy. When Imerle initiates her coup, that enemy makes use of the chaos created to show its hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raphael's St. George and the Dragon is the work of a genius -- an exquisitely rendered vision of heroism and innocence by one of the greatest painters of all time. Yet the painting's creation is only the beginning of its fascinating story, which spans centuries of power play and intrigue, and has made it a witness to the rise and fall of the great powers of the Western world as it seduced its owners to ever greater heights of corruption and greed. Raphael's masterpiece was commissioned by Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, the ruler of Urbino, in 1506. Raphael was only twenty-three years old, but he had already begun to acquire a reputation as a painter who was as ruthless in his pursuit of money as he was talented. The duke sent the painting to England's King Henry VII as a thank-you for naming him a knight in the Order of the Garter. The painting then mysteriously disappeared for one hundred years until King Charles I saw it hanging in the collection of the Earl of Pembroke and acquired it for a book of Holbein drawings. After Charles was beheaded in 1649, his collection was broken up and the painting made its way to the private gallery of the third-richest man in France, where it was ensconced in its own special room. Thirty years later, the philosopher Diderot was instructed by Catherine the Great of Russia to buy it for her vast collection at the Hermitage. The heroic curators of the Hermitage protected St. George and the Dragon from fire, water, and the anarchists of the Russian Revolution, until Joseph Stalin sold it in 1930 to raise cash. The secret buyer was Andrew Mellon, Treasury Secretary of the United States, who in doing so blatantly violated a U.S. sanction against doing any business with Soviet Russia. Mellon eventually founded The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., where St. George and the Dragon rests to this day. Exceptionally written and breathlessly paced, The Dragon's Trail is a microhistory that touches on the rise of the Tudors, the downfall of a Stuart, the twilight of the French aristocracy, the terrors of the Bolshevik revolution, and the depths of the Cold War -- all witnessed by one painting that inspired the best and the worst instincts in its owners.
