Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting in Many Countries IN the following pages the author has attempted a double task: he has gathered from the experience of many years recollections of runs with packs of hounds whose names are familiar to all, and he has complied with the wishes of friends in the North of England and elsewhere in giving particulars of certain packs which have hitherto been neglected by fox-hunting historians. He has not aimed in all these cases at giving the details which should be presented in every complete history of a hunt, but has relied rather on his own personal knowledge of countries with which he can claim to be fairly well acquainted. Some of the runs belong to recent days, others to hunting history. Three great runs, which may rightly be called historical, took place more than fifty years ago, and the author's descriptions Of them have since been confirmed and corroborated in the Field by others who had been present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Hunting Trips in British North America All the best years of my life, from youth till middle age, were spent as a hunter of African game. During that time the love of the free wandering life in countries still well stocked with the richest and most varied fauna to he found on the face of the earth, grew with the years, till it seemed to me that I could never be content to live any other life than that of a nomadic hunter. But as time went on the game that was of value became ever scarcer and scarcer, civiliza tion gradually spread over the old hunting grounds, and the old hunters either died or had to turn their energies in other directions. It is now a good many years since I ceased to make my living by my rifle, but in view of the length of time during which I did so, and the eventful character of the life I then led, it is not, perhaps, remarkable that my thoughts still often wander back to a past of stirring and glorious memories. Nor is it surprising that I sometimes grow restless and dissatisfied with life in this highly civilized country, and long with an irresistible longing to taste the joys of a hunter's life once more. Those to whose lot it will fall to criticise this book, will possibly find it more surprising that I should have had the hardihood, after having already written so much on the subject of sport and travel, to publish the record of the few unimportant hunting trips which have been the outcome of my restlessness during the last few years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Foxhunter It may be asked, Who wants to hunt in the suburbs of any large and Of course there can be only one answer to such a question; but none the less it is a fact that many once good hunting countries have been curtailed owing to the extension of suburban districts. The result of this extension has been that all sorts of people have migrated from the inner to the extreme outer circles of London and of all large provincial towns, and have in their new abodes found themselves within reasonable touch of hunting. Many of these migrants, of course, are in no wise concerned when they happen to see hounds or hunting folk on the road; but others have been attracted, at first probably by the panoply of the chase, and afterwards by the sport itself. The possessors of these - I may say gifts - live and are formed for excitement. If not satiated in one way, and that an innocent, manly, and useful one, your boys may take to the gaming-table, or to an excess of feasting, rioting, or debauchery. Excitement they must have or die. Let them, therefore, become bold riders, cunning hunters, rifiemen of the woods. Inure them to toil while they are young, and a green Old age shall reward them for their choice, and they shall be thankful to you for your encourage ment and advice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hunting Countries of England, Their Facilities, Character, and Requirements, Vol. 1: A Guide to Hunting Men; Parts I., II., And III Army men especially are often puzzled to fix upon the scene of their two or three months' sport. They would frequently prefer to vary their sphere of action; but as their term of leave is limited, they cannot afford the risk of disappointment in trying new ground. Often, too, their stud is weak in numbers; they wish to make the most of it, but do not care to throw their lot in where, if unable to hunt every day, they would find themselves left more or less in the lurch. For this reason they must follow the chase either within reach of their own neighbourhood and connections, or within reasonable distance of their Club and the resources of Town. City men in the same way can Seldom afford to devote themselves for long together to the more isolating phases of the sport. They are fain to divide their time, in such proportion as they may, between the two rival divinities whom they serve. The dusty shrine in Lombard-street has as strong a claim upon them as the sylvan grove of Faunus 3 and for each hour in the merry company of the goat-like deity they must devote two to the golden calf. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Scenes of a Hunter's Life, or the Hunting and Hunters of All Nations: Including Cumming's and Girard's Adventures The subject of hunting is one which has a peculiar interest for the people of this country. So large a portion of our territory, even in the most thickly settled States, is still covered with forests abounding in game and beasts of the chase, that almost every citizen occasionally becomes a sportsman or a hunter; and those who never engage in any sport of the hunt ing kind, nevertheless, are interested in the narratives of those who have distinguished themselves in forest and field. Nevertheless he has some h0pe that, with the powerful aid of Mr. Giberne's pencil, he may give strangers some faint notion of what the chase of the wild red deer is, and of the reasons why the west countrymen are so enthusiastic over it. We have acres of woodland and oceans of grass, We have game in the autumn and cubs in the spring.' once it was the fashion to decry the York and Ainsty country, and not so many years ago the late Mr. Bromley Davenport, whose spirited writings are well known to most sportsmen, wrote, with somewhat questionable taste, in my humble opinion, about a man deserving to be condemned to hunt for the rest of his days with the York and Ainsty. Even when it was purely a plough country, when the little grass there was in it was mainly confined to riverside meadow, the York and Ainsty was a happy hunting ground, as many a gallant soldier will testify who had his early hunting when quartered at York, Coma/e Planco, and from its earliest history good runs have been as prevalent as with other, and at one time, more fashionable packs. The Duchess of Buck ingham's gentlemen-at-arms lent me a horse. I wished many a time when I rode by him, that I might have had the privilege to have altered (sic) my mind to him. We hunted the fox, and the King rides very hard, as any one almost in the field. He got two falls, but received no harm. After hunting, the King and his nobles drink a cup of wine and eat a piece of bread under any old hedge, and after the King I assure you I had the honour to do the same out of his gilt cups. After that we go to the house where the King takes coach, and eat some hot soft beef, and burnt ale. The place is about five or six miles out of town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Hunting Through Wild Europe In the opening chapter of my Pictures of Bird-Life, written in 1903, I indicated roughly, in the following words, what a splendid field there was for the photographic ornithologist in various parts of Europe: 'A most interesting expedition could be made now in pursuit of the Eagles and Vultures of Southern Europe. In Spain alone there are still to be found, in the big pine-woods and rugged sierras, five different kinds of Eagles and four kinds of Vultures. Some of these are yearly decreasing in numbers, and in a few more years will be extremely rare. Hungary and the country round the Danube is also particularly rich in raptorial and marsh birds.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in the Western Land IN the following pages I have endeavoured to record the recollections of a few months' wanderings in North America, spent chiefly in hunting in the Rocky Mountains. My principal objects in making the trip were to obtain a thorough change of scene, and to see something of a country of which we have all heard so much. I make no claim to having done or seen more than any one else could have done, having the same time and means at their disposal, and possessed of the same keenness for sport as myself. I believe, however, that I was in luck on the hunt; at least, I am told so by some well able to judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
