Book excerpt: Sundered Muse Trilogy Book 1: A talented troupe of street performers ply the towns and kingdoms of an alternate Middle Ages, secretly fighting the Red King who, with his disarmingly handsome son, the Red Wolf, are plotting world conquest. The troupe's showmaster is one of The Thirteen, a band of mentalist leaders charged with subduing the Red Monarchy and fulfilling a centuries-old utopian prophecy. Key to that achievement is finding the Red Whelps, hidden daughters of the Red Wolf, each unknowing their true parentage and kinship. They, when found and brought together, are foretold to manifest an until now unknown power to bring about the downfall of their grandfather, the Red King. If The Thirteen succeed, will the half-sisters' power prove wieldable or be chaotic? And is the Red Wolf secretly plotting to use it for his own ends?

Feminist Folktales from Around the World collects these forgotten classics and presents them with original artwork by designer and illustrator Suki Boynton. Volume four in the series, The Hunter Maiden features an introduction by Renee Watson, the New York Times bestselling author of Piecing Me Together. In these eleven adventures, a diverse cast of female protagonists lend their daring and determination to everything from battling evil wizards in Russia to outsmarting tricky demons in South Africa. In the title story, a young member of the Zuni Native American tribe proves her resourcefulness as she confronts cultural double standards and malicious winter spirits.

Book excerpt: In 1515, Thomas Lillard gave up Knighthood and Scotland. He sailed to France where he married a beautiful French woman. It seemed that the fates had smiled upon Evett. That God had heard her prayers. The two settled on a large plot of land in the Loire River Valley. Thomas became known for his vineyard and fine wines. The English he had fought against called upon him for his vintage. But everything was not as it seemed on the surface. Thomas's real mission was one of secrecy. The vineyard was just a cover for the Scots Garde to practice the ancient arts of Scottish battle. Thomas and Evett's daughter, Rene, would change the course of history for the Scots Garde. A descendant of Joan of Arc, she would live to fight with her father's men, teach them another way of fighting, and fall in love. Rene wanted to be with Jared more than anything in the world. Fate led them back to Scotland. What was written long ago was sealed. Somewhere out in the deepest reaches of space and time, the stars were waiting. Today the words are upon the Maiden's Stone.

Book Synopsis Animism in Southeast Asia by : Kaj Arhem
Download or read book Animism in Southeast Asia written by Kaj Arhem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animism refers to ontologies or worldviews which assign agency and personhood to human and non-human beings alike. Recent years have seen a revival of this concept in anthropology, where it is now discussed as an alternative to modern-Western naturalistic notions of human-environment relations. Based on original fieldwork, this book presents a number of case studies of animism from insular and peninsular Southeast Asia and offers a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon – its diversity and underlying commonalities and its resilience in the face of powerful forces of change. Critically engaging with the current standard notion of animism, based on hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist societies in other regions, it examines the roles of life forces, souls and spirits in local cosmologies and indigenous religion. It proposes an expansion of the concept to societies featuring mixed farming, sacrifice and hierarchy and explores the question of how non-human agents are created through acts of attention and communication, touching upon the relationship between animist ontologies, world religion, and the state. Shedding new light on Southeast Asian religious ethnographic research, the book is a significant contribution to anthropological theory and the revitalization of the concept of animism in the humanities and social sciences.
