Book excerpt: Helene Tursten's explosive new series features Detective Inspector Embla Nyström, a sharp, unforgiving woman working in a man's world. When one of her peers is murdered during a routine hunting trip, Embla must track down the killer while confronting a dark incident from her past. Twenty-eight-year-old Embla Nyström has been plagued by chronic nightmares and racing thoughts ever since she can remember. She has learned to channel most of her anxious energy into her position as Detective Inspector in the mobile unit in Gothenburg, Sweden, and into sports. A talented hunter and prizewinning Nordic welterweight, she is glad to be taking a vacation from her high-stress job to attend the annual moose hunt with her family and friends. But when Embla arrives at her uncle’s cabin in rural Dalsland, she sees an unfamiliar face has joined the group: Peter, enigmatic, attractive, and newly divorced. And she isn’t the only one to notice. One longtime member of the hunt doesn’t welcome the presence of an outsider and is quick to point out that with Peter, the group’s number reaches thirteen, a bad omen for the week. Sure enough, a string of unsettling incidents follow, culminating in the disappearance of two hunters. Embla takes charge of the search, and they soon find one of the missing men floating facedown in the nearby lake. With the help of local reinforcements, Embla delves into the dark pasts of her fellow hunters in search of a killer.

Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Formatted for e-reader Illustrated About Hunted Down by Charles Dickens Hunted Down is an unique collection of Dickens stories, establishing him as one of the masters of the detective genre. Charles Dickens was one of the pioneers of detective fiction. While the larger-than-life characters in his novels have settled themselves in the public imagination, his detectives have had a profound effect on the development of crime fiction, and Dickens is now seen as the first major publicist for the police detective. Hunted Down has a fascinating selection of Dickens's detective stories. Added to these are extracts from the novels in which the men of the law make their mark, including Mr. Nadgett from Martin Chuzzlewit, the first serious detective in an English novel, and the Inspector Bucket from Bleak House.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunted Down, The Detective Stories by Charles Dickens (1859).A fascinating selection of Charles Dickens' detective stories. Added to the stories are extracts from the novels in which the men of the law make their mark. These law officers and the circumstances in which they work were based on Dickens' observations of the fledgling police detective force when he was a solicitor's clerk and reporter. He accompanied detectives on their nightly patrols of the streets of London, witnessed the day-to-day running of police stations, attended magistrates' courts, and was present at murder trials and public executions. Out of these eyewitness experiences grew Mr. Nadgett in Martin Chuzzlewit--the first serious detective in an English novel--and Inspector Bucket in Bleak House, who solves the murder of an unscrupulous lawyer. The assorted cast of inspectors, sergeants, and constables also include an amateur detective, a river policeman, and the prototype of all undercover policemen.AuthorCharles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. Cliffhanger endings in his serial publications kept readers in suspense. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens improved the character with positive features. His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives.

Book excerpt: A freak plane crash sets off a chase for a little girl with strange powers in this “stay-up-all-night” thriller from an Edgar Award–winning author (USA Today). Amanda is playing in the backyard when the plane explodes overhead. As metal, fire, and bodies rain down on her small town, the little girl wanders off. Houses on either side explode as she toddles away from the carnage, across the park, and into the woods. When her mother finds her, Amanda is asleep in the arms of a mysterious man. Carol takes her daughter and flees for her life, afraid not of the hell their town has become, but of what might happen if her daughter is found. Little Amanda is blessed with the power to heal the sick, and there are powerful people who want to find out where her mysterious ability comes from. After the crash, Carol and her daughter flee to New York, where one mother’s love is all that stands between Amanda and the forces of evil.

Book excerpt: Writer Kevin Weeks was top Lieutenant to James "Whitey" Bulger, head of the South Boston Irish Mob, who was on the run for more than 16 years before his capture on June 22, 2011. Hunted Down is a story of murder, friendship and loyalty within the mob. It includes additional information and stories that Weeks omitted from his memoir, Brutal: The Untold Story of My Life Inside Whitey Bulger's Irish Mob. While Hunted Down is fiction, its insider knowledge makes it all the more intriguing and depicts an exciting, realistic story of the FBI's global hunt and eventual capture of Whitey Bulgerand his companion of Catherine Greig."
