Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When their Ukrainian grandmother is lost on a trans-Atlantic Flight, two sisters are swept into a quest across eastern Europe to find the woman who had always told more tales than truths. From Poland to Slovakia to Hungary and beyond, Larissa and Ira navigate the steps of Ukrainian folk dance, the cliff-side paths of Slovak Paradise National Park, and the stark realities of war, folktales, and feminism, all for the sake of chasing who they're starting to believe is a true Baba Yaga. Understanding their family's roots has never been more clear. The setting's mythic properties drift like ghosts in the humid air, hinting of the folktales the sisters whisper like codes of bravery. The nesting dolls they discover reveal how each woman becomes stronger when tucked one, within another, within another-forgetting lies and truths to seize upon history, love, and the familial traditions that have shaped them into who they are together. Author and professional editor Kris Spisak has been spotlighted in Writer's Digest and The Huffington Post for her work to helping other writers. Her previous non-fiction books include Get a Grip on Your Grammar: 250 Writing and Editing Reminders for the Curious or Confused, The Novel Editing Workbook, and The Family Story Workbook. Spisak's background and her own family experience in the Ukrainian diaspora add weight to her fiction debut.

Book Synopsis The Annie F. Downs Teen Collection by : Annie F. Downs
Download or read book The Annie F. Downs Teen Collection written by Annie F. Downs and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Downs is honest. She’s sincere. And she’s funny. In this two-book ebook bindup of her bestselling titles Perfectly Unique and Speak Love, Annie takes on two topics central to every teen’s life: how we see ourselves when we look in the mirror, and how we use our words in everyday life to either build someone up or take them down. In Perfectly Unique, Annie focuses on the you that everyone sees. Perhaps you are struggling with your body image or are trying to make sense of why God made you as you are. Maybe you are looking for new ways to understand Scripture or to love God more fully. Either way, this book will take you on a thoughtful, funny, and spirit-filled exploration of the way you were designed and will help you better honor the Creator by learning to value his perfectly unique creation (yourself!). In Speak Love, Annie turns the focus to the you that sometimes slips out via your tongue. Because everything you say—from what tell your friends, whisper about your enemies, post online, mutter to yourself, or even say to the celebrity you ran into at the coffee shop—carries a whole lot of power. Through very funny stories, Scripture, and a real understanding of the good, bad, and ugly ways we can use our words, Annie Downs explores the difference you can make when you speak love to others, to God, and even to yourself. Because when you speak love, you speak life. And that's what matters.

Book Synopsis Strategize Your Way to Success by : Charles D. Patton
Download or read book Strategize Your Way to Success written by Charles D. Patton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book teaches you how to succeed in every aspect of your life through the intelligent use of strategy. Strategy is the essence of getting what you want. A child talks her grandpa into buying an ice cream cone. One spouse tries to convince the other that a new set of golf clubs is a necessity. A salesperson tries to displace his or her competitor’s products on a retailer’s shelves. Strategies are in use everywhere and affect the success of whatever you are trying to do. The first eight chapters lay out the structure of strategy. Some people think strategy is something mystical and only understood by born leaders. In this book, you will find strategy is eminently learnable and the structure easy to understand. When you learn how to strategize by following the structure, your chances of success in any endeavor will be greatly improved. The next four chapters spell out the specifics of offense and defense and provide over 300 actual offensive and defensive strategies that can be used in different real life situations. The remaining two chapters cover what to expect when you succeed or fail, detailing the consequences of victory or defeat, and conclude with a condensed summary of the process. This book is the result of over twelve years of interviews; research that included a wide variety of business, academic, military, and other written works, the analysis of the strategic actions taken by top executives in many businesses; in-depth study of military strategies and their application to life’s other problems; and general observations of people going about their everyday lives. The subject matter of this book can be applied to all aspects of life and is timeless.
Download or read book The Wise Advocate written by Art Kleiner and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is the habit of making good choices. Even in difficult and uncertain circumstances, the most effective leaders focus their attention and overcome entrenched patterns of behavior to push an organization to new heights of success. This capability is no fluke: the latest research on the brain shows that we can pinpoint the mental activity associated with it—and cultivate it for our benefit. In this book, Art Kleiner, a strategy expert; Jeffrey Schwartz, a research psychiatrist; and Josie Thomson, an executive coach, give a transformative explanation of how cutting-edge neuroscience can help business leaders set a course toward better management. Mapping the functions of a manager onto established patterns of mental activity, they identify crucial brain circuits and their parallels in organizational culture. Strategic leaders, they show, play the role of wise advocates: able to go beyond day-to-day transactional behavior to a longer-term, broader perspective that articulates their organization’s deeper purpose. True leaders can play this influencer role in an organization because they have cultivated similar self-reflective habits in their own minds. Providing a powerful guide to decision strategies and their consequences, The Wise Advocate helps managers find their own inner voice and then make that voice ring out loud and clear, with a four-step program for practice and catalytic implications for management strategy, executive education, and business results.
Book Synopsis Come Again to the Circle by : William B. Kincaid
Download or read book Come Again to the Circle written by William B. Kincaid and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come Again to the Circle features the wisdom and reflections of forty diverse Christian leaders from around the US. These leaders are working to faithfully facilitate the conversations that broke open during the pandemic and to leverage the learnings from the era of COVID for what lies ahead. Their stories, perspectives, and actions will provide reference points and first steps for congregations discerning the commitments and contours of their own futures. COVID-19 pulled the curtain back on the realities in the church and the broader society. Grief and massive uncertainty of recent years especially have created a pervasive, albeit misguided, nostalgia that has sent many congregations scurrying to return to the congregational life of pre-March 2020. At the same time, many people are evaluating the value added by their church participation and whether and how they will resume their religious activities. Come Again to the Circle focuses on the church transcending COVID, on being the church beyond COVID rather than a church defined by it. These leaders name themes, opportunities, and strategies to show us the way.

Book Synopsis The Merging of Knowledge by : International Movement ATD Fourth World. University Research Group
Download or read book The Merging of Knowledge written by International Movement ATD Fourth World. University Research Group and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates the success of a seemingly impossible challenge: to have a group of academics and people living in persistent poverty conduct research together. What conditions can the knowledge drawn from poverty cross with academic rigor? What type of knowledge does this collaboration result in? This is what The Merging of Knowledge presents in terms of the processes of The Fourth World-University program and the result of its five groups of work: history, family, knowledge, work and human activity, and citizenship. The results featured in this book can be appreciated on many levels. At the level of content, this unique collaboration offers knowledge from the very poor regarding their lives that is neglected or misunderstood in fields as varied as history, family sociology, work sociology, and political science. This "voice of the voiceless" is brought to the book by collaborative writing and is presented with the academics' methodological and epistemological contribution. At the level of gathering and understanding the information collected, the very poor are often given the role as "witnesses" of poverty in interviews. Here, as researchers, they contribute to rigorously examined content that illuminates their situations.

Book Synopsis Down from the Mountaintop by : Joshua Dolezal
Download or read book Down from the Mountaintop written by Joshua Dolezal and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical coming-of-age memoir, Down from the Mountaintop chronicles a quest for belonging. Raised in northwestern Montana by Pentecostal homesteaders whose twenty-year experiment in subsistence living was closely tied to their faith, Joshua Doležal experienced a childhood marked equally by his parents’ quest for spiritual transcendence and the surrounding Rocky Mountain landscape. Unable to fully embrace the fundamentalism of his parents, he began to search for religious experience elsewhere: in baseball, books, and weightlifting, then later in migrations to Tennessee, Nebraska, and Uruguay. Yet even as he sought to understand his place in the world, he continued to yearn for his mountain home. For more than a decade, Doležal taught in the Midwest throughout the school year but returned to Montana and Idaho in the summers to work as a firefighter and wilderness ranger. He reveled in the life of the body and the purifying effects of isolation and nature, believing he had found transcendence. Yet his summers tied him even more to the mountain landscape, fueling his sense of exile on the plains. It took falling in love, marrying, and starting a family in Iowa to allow Doležal to fully examine his desire for a spiritual mountaintop from which to view the world. In doing so, he undergoes a fundamental redefinition of the nature of home and belonging. He learns to accept the plains on their own terms, moving from condemnation to acceptance and from isolation to community. Coming down from the mountaintop means opening himself to relationships, grounding himself as a husband, father, and gardener who learns that where things grow, the grower also takes root.
