Die Studien zeigen die enge Verknüpfung der konzeptionellen Überlegungen Gebhardts mit den konkreten historischen Untersuchungen. Sie umfassen die Auseinandersetzung mit den Werken einzelner Denker ebenso wie die Analyse breiterer soziopolitischer und -kultureller Prozesse und Konstellationen. Die konzeptionellen Fragen, die Gebhardt im Rahmen seiner historischen Studien behandelt, reichen von der im Neukantianismus des 19. Jahrhunderts wurzelnden Werte-Problematik, die das Wissenschaftsverständnis im 20. Jahrhundert nachhaltig geprägt hat, über die Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten in der Geschichte des Republikanismus bis hin zu Fragen des Verhältnisses von Religion und Politik.Zusätzlich wurde in den zweiten Teil je ein Aufsatz zu Hannah Arendt, Leo Strauss und Eric Voegelin aufgenommen, also zu drei der wichtigsten Vertreter einer philosophisch-hermeneutischen und kritischen Politikwissenschaft im 20.
