Book excerpt: This fast paced and well documented analysis of the government's steady march away from God will either thrill or anger you - depending on your worldview. For those of us who acknowledge the Creator of the Universe as our God, Savior, and Lord, this document tends to stir up both the sadness at the exponential slippage from our foundations as a Country, and a challenge to stand strongly and openly against the growing intensity of those who would remove "religion" from America. The "nations rage" sometimes and "imagine a vain thing," but "he who sits in the heavens shall laugh." Mr. Frater has done a wonderful job of tracing the Humanist movement from its early inception and its subtle and damaging impact on our nation over the decades. All serious students of history and those of Kingdom concern should avail themselves of his work. Henry M. Morris III Chief Executive Officer Institute for Creation Research George Frater, B.S., M.S., M.A., Ed.S., retired Quality Assurance/Quality Control Coordinator, Air Monitoring Department, Environmental Protection Commission, Hillsborough County, Florida. Education: Wisconsin State, B.S./Agriculture, Biology and Chemistry minors; Iowa State, M.S./Poultry Nutrition; and Vanderbilt, M.A. and Ed.S., Biology. Taught science in Brandon High School in Hillsborough County, and in Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, Minnesota. Ran the Cancer Research Center Tissue Culture Lab at Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville. Served: Bible-Science Association on the National Board of Directors. B-SA Middle Tennessee Chapter as President. Floridians for the Accurate, Complete Teaching of Science as President. Current membership: Creation Research Society, an organization of scientists. Creation Studies Institute, contributing writer. Frater became alarmed at the number of Christian students lured into believing the Humanistic teaching in public schools and decided to arm them with facts from the past that would help them remain steadfast in their faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has postwar Japanese abortion policy been relatively progressive, while contraception policy has been relatively conservative? The Japanese government legalized abortion in 1948 but did not approve the pill until 1999. In this carefully researched study, Tiana Norgren argues that these contradictory policies flowed from very different historical circumstances and interest group configurations. Doctors and family planners used a small window of opportunity during the Occupation to legalize abortion, and afterwards, doctors and women battled religious groups to uphold the law. The pill, on the other hand, first appeared at an inauspicious moment in history. Until circumstances began to change in the mid-1980s, the pharmaceutical industry was the pill's lone champion: doctors, midwives, family planners, and women all opposed the pill as a potential threat to their livelihoods, abortion rights, and women's health. Clearly written and interwoven with often surprising facts about Japanese history and politics, Norgren's book fills vital gaps in the cross-national literature on the politics of reproduction, a subject that has received more attention in the European and American contexts. Abortion Before Birth Control will be a valuable resource for those interested in abortion and contraception policies, gender studies, modern Japanese history, political science, and public policy. This is a major contribution to the literature on reproductive rights and the role of civil society in a country usually discussed in the context of its industrial might.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanists are quick to defend threats to the separation of church and state, but they have not always been consistently unified in engaging with pressing issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality—namely, those linked to economic, environmental, and social justice. Drawing on his tenure as executive director of the American Humanist Association, Roy Speckhardt calls for humanists everywhere to center justice in their humanism by promoting public policy based on ethical humanist principles. Acknowledging the challenges inherent to this type of advocacy and activism—such as balancing short-term needs with long-term goals, and espousing a common humanity without erasing differences—he makes a compelling case for championing justice-centered humanism. He also provides guidance for doing so, whether on the local, state, or federal level. Precisely because there is no such thing as cosmic justice in an afterlife, he reminds, it's especially important that humanists everywhere combat injustice in this life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanists have been a major force in British life since the turn of the 20th century. Here, leading historians of religious non-belief Callum Brown, David Nash, and Charlie Lynch examine how humanist organisations brought ethical reform and rationalism to the nation as it faced the moral issues of the modern world. This book provides a long overdue account of this dynamic group. Developing through the Ethical Union (1896), the Rationalist Press Association (1899), the British Humanist Association (1963) and Humanists UK (2017), Humanists sought to reduce religious privilege but increase humanitarian compassion and human rights. After pioneering legislation on blasphemy laws, dignity in dying and abortion rights, they went on to help design new laws on gay marriage, and sex and moral education. Internationally, they endeavoured to end war and world hunger. And with Humanist marriages and celebration of life through Humanist funerals, national ritual and culture have recently been transformed. Based on extensive archival and oral-history research, this is the definitive history of Humanists as an ethical force in modern Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanism is “the radical idea that you can be good without a god.” That’s how Roy Speckhardt, the longtime executive director of the American Humanist Association, defines it. His new book, Creating Change Through Humanism, lays out how and why people can lead moral and ethical lives without belief in a higher power. While surveys show that more and more Americans are giving up on religion, merely abandoning traditional religious faith is just one step on a path to a better way of thinking. Speckhardt explains how to take the next steps with the empathy and activism that characterize humanism today. Humanism has inspired generations of individuals to improve themselves, their communities and their country. Creating Change Through Humanism describes how a humanist lifestance has influenced and can continue to advance acceptance, diversity and equality. Humanist ideals pervaded the U.S. from its founding, starting with the innovative idea of separating church and state to maintain a religiously-neutral government. Humanism has continued to propel our nation toward social progress by promoting basic human rights and dignity. The humanist movement, with its forward-thinking outlook and emphasis on critical thinking and self-reflection, has been at the forefront of such pressing social issues as civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ equality, responsible scientific freedom, and the environment and population dynamics. Speckhardt interweaves personal stories, including his own, of individuals who have journeyed from organized religion to humanistic convictions. He encourages his readers to be open about their own lack of belief and to become active in social and political causes, so they can put their positive values into action and combat the anti-humanist prejudice propagated by the religious right.

Recent events that have revealed critical economic and social turmoil resulting from worldwide policies on birth control have helped to resurface this issue. This book does not deal with the looming crises which tend to shift with time. Rather, it gets right to the root theological underpinnings. This book is for those unwilling to let the shifting winds of time direct their step. It is for those who are not afraid to dig deep beneath the surface and face uncomfortable issues that have been buried for the sake of convenience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of social, political, economic, and religious rupture. Ideologies polarise to fuel confrontation within communities, nations and regions of the world. At this point in the twenty-first century, humanism's focus on reason, ethics and justice offers the potential to rethink and re-engage in new ways. "What Is Humanism, and Why Does It Matter?" brings together leading humanist thinkers and activists to examine humanism and how it can work in the world. Humanism is often misunderstood. The movement includes both atheists and agnostics, who seek to make ethical sense of the world based on shared human values and a concern for human welfare, happiness and fulfillment. "What Is Humanism, and Why Does It Matter?" presents an overview and exploration of the meaning and nature of humanism, both as a philosophy and as a way of engaging with the challenges of the world.
