Book Synopsis Preventing Child Trafficking by : Jonathan Todres
Download or read book Preventing Child Trafficking written by Jonathan Todres and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can a public health approach advance efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to child trafficking? Child trafficking is widely recognized as one of the critical issues of our day, prompting calls to action at the global, national, and local levels. Yet it is unclear whether the strategies and tools used to counter this exploitation—most of which involve law enforcement and social services—have actually reduced the prevalence of trafficking. In Preventing Child Trafficking, Jonathan Todres and Angela Diaz explore how the public health field can play a comprehensive, integrated role in preventing, identifying, and responding to child trafficking. Describing the depth and breadth of trafficking's impact on children while exploring the limitations in current responses, Todres and Diaz argue that public health frameworks offer important insights into the problem, with detailed chapters on how professionals and organizations can identify and respond effectively to at-risk and trafficked children. Drawing on the authors' years of experience working on this issue—Diaz is a doctor at a frontline medical center serving at-risk youth, victims, and survivors; Todres is a legal expert on legislative and policy initiatives to address child trafficking—the book maps out a public health approach to child trafficking, the role of the health care sector, and the prospects for building a comprehensive response. Providing readers with advice geared toward better understanding trafficking's root causes, this revelatory book concludes by mapping out a "public health toolkit" that can be used by anyone who is interested in preventing child trafficking, from policymakers to professionals who work with children.

Download or read book The Health of Human Trafficking Victims in San Diego, California written by Noelle Lipkin Leveque and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background/Purposes/ Aims: Human trafficking (HT) is a threat to human rights globally. Studies indicate between 28% and 87% of HT victims encountered a health care professional during their trafficking period. Nonetheless, little is known about the health care needs of victims of HT. The purpose of this study was to examine the health care needs of a self-identified group of trafficked women in San Diego County, California. Conceptual Basis: The Model of Human Trafficking and Health by Zimmerman et al. (2011) was used to identify multiple determinates of health following the trafficking period including demographic factors (age at assessment, age at entry into trafficking, ethnicity, history of homelessness, history of foster care), exploitation factors (motivation for trading sex), needs assessment (drug rehabilitation, methadone maintenance, counseling), sexual health factors (use of condoms), and mental health factors (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder). Method: Retrospective, descriptive study of previously collected data (2012-2015) from first-time offenders arrested for prostitution participating in a law-enforcement diversion program. 191 were interviewed, 31 (16.6%) self-identified as HT victims. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to describe the sample and examine the relationships between the variables. Results: All HT victims were women, significantly younger (M=23.3, SD 6.67), versus (M=26.95, SD 9.21); t(55) = 2.51, p = .015, more likely to have a history of homelessness, x2(1, N = 188) = 11.18, p = .001, been in the foster care system x2(2, N = 191) = 5.93, p = .048, "feeling depressed" [x2(2, N =31) = 13.205, p = .001], "difficulty concentrating" [x2(2, N =31) = 10.809, p = .004], "hopelessness/desperation" [x2(2, N=31) = 15.556, p
Book Synopsis Developing Community Awareness by : Elizabeth Velazquez
Download or read book Developing Community Awareness written by Elizabeth Velazquez and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal activity in the United States (U. S. Department of State, 2014). The majority of victims of human trafficking globally originate from the United States. In the Unites States, California leads in economic growth and job creation. This strong economy makes California’s businesses, communities and people’s targets for transnational organized crime (Harris, 2014). Nationally, California has become the leader in regards to the import and export of narcotics, weapons and human trafficking. Los Angeles is one of the main points of entry into the United States for victims of sex trafficking and San Francisco is among the cities that are experiencing an increase in the number of sex trafficking cases (retrieved from HumanTrafficking.org, 2006). San Joaquin County is centrally located along this critical corridor that traffickers use to transport women across California. This project was developed in response to the above statistics in order to increase awareness and education among the general public of San Joaquin County in regards to the growing problem of human trafficking. This population includes high school aged students, parents, non-profit organizations, educators, government employees, and community members.
Book Synopsis Perception of Human Trafficking Prevalence in Ventura County by : Katherine Rhodes
Download or read book Perception of Human Trafficking Prevalence in Ventura County written by Katherine Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: Human trafficking - the exploitation of a person for sex or labor through the use of force, fraud, or coercion - is a globally expanding criminal industry. Victims of human trafficking have a substantial and long-term need for services, but lack of data on the prevalence of the crime impairs response from law enforcement and social services. Ventura County, California currently has little to no data on the prevalence of human trafficking within its borders. Research Question: What is organizational perception of the prevalence of human trafficking within Ventura County? Method: The researcher conducted qualitative oral interviews with eleven out of sixteen steering committee members of the Ventura County Coalition Against Human Trafficking. Each steering committee member represented an organization working with victims of crime or people at risk. The researcher asked a series of seven questions regarding the organizations' experiences with trafficking victims. Results: All participants agreed that human trafficking has occurred and is continuing to occur in Ventura County. Each participant stated that prevalence of human trafficking is undoubtedly more widespread than reported but that the local scope is impossible to determine without proactive screening, outreach, and investigation. Content analysis revealed six common themes: newness of the issue, scarcity of professionals assigned to the issue, limited numbers of identified v victims, focus on sex trafficking over labor trafficking, the characteristic of "female" as the unifying victim demographic, and the primary use of professional judgement in victim identification. Discussion: Human traffickers target vulnerable people for their victims. Proactive screening, outreach, and investigations are needed to identify those victims in Ventura County. Further research is needed to quantify local prevalence of the crime.
Book Synopsis Taking Down Backpage by : Maggy Krell
Download or read book Taking Down Backpage written by Maggy Krell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insider details from the takedown of Backpage, the world’s largest sex trafficker, by the prosecutor who led the charge For almost a decade, Backpage.com was the world’s largest sex trafficking operation. Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, in 800 cities throughout the world, Backpage ran thousands of listings advertising the sale of vulnerable young people for sex. Reaping a cut off every transaction, the owners of the website raked in millions of dollars. But many of the people in the advertisements were children, as young as 12, and forced into the commercial sex trade through fear, violence and coercion. In Taking Down Backpage, veteran California prosecutor Maggy Krell tells the story of how she and her team battled against this sex trafficking monolith. Beginning with her early career as a young DA, she shares the evolution of the anti-human trafficking movement. Through a fascinating combination of memoir and legal insight, Krell reveals how she and her team started with the prosecution of street pimps and ultimately ended with the takedown of the largest purveyor of human trafficking in the world. She shares powerful stories of interviews with survivors, sting operations, court cases, and the personal struggles that were necessary to bring Backpage executives to justice. Finally, Krell examines the state of sex trafficking after Backpage and the crucial work that still remains. Taking Down Backpage is a gripping story of tragedy, overcoming adversity, and the pursuit of justice that gives insight into the fight against sex trafficking in the digital age.
Book Synopsis Life Interrupted by : Denise Brennan
Download or read book Life Interrupted written by Denise Brennan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Interrupted introduces us to survivors of human trafficking who are struggling to get by and make homes for themselves in the United States. Having spent nearly a decade following the lives of formerly trafficked men and women, Denise Brennan recounts in close detail their flight from their abusers and their courageous efforts to rebuild their lives. At once scholarly and accessible, her book links these firsthand accounts to global economic inequities and under-regulated and unprotected workplaces that routinely exploit migrant laborers in the United States. Brennan contends that today's punitive immigration policies undermine efforts to fight trafficking. While many believe trafficking happens only in the sex trade, Brennan shows that across low-wage labor sectors—in fields, in factories, and on construction sites—widespread exploitation can lead to and conceal forced labor. Life Interrupted is a riveting account of life in and after trafficking and a forceful call for meaningful immigration and labor reform. All royalties from this book will be donated to the nonprofit Survivor Leadership Training Fund administered through the Freedom Network.
