Book Synopsis Manned Systems Design by : Krais Moraal
Download or read book Manned Systems Design written by Krais Moraal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Freiburg, West Germany, September 22-25, 1980, entitled "Manned Systems Design, New Methods and Equipment". The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panel on Human Factors of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, and supported by Panel VIII, AC/243, on "Human and Biomedical Sciences". Their sponsorship and support are gratefully acknowledged. The contributions in the book are grouped according to the main themes of the conference with special emphasis on analytical approaches, measurement of performance, and simulator design and evaluat ion. The design of manned systems covers many and highly diversified areas. Therefore, a conference under the general title of "Manned Systems Design" is rather ambitious in itself. However, scientists and engineers engaged in the design of manned systems very often are confronted with problems that can be solved only by having several disciplines working together. So it was felt that knowledge about newly developed methods and equipment, applicable in the design process, is of common and increasing interest for all those who are engaged in the design of manned systems, from the earliest con ceptual design phases until operation under real circumstances. This seems to be particularly true in view of restricted resources of manpower and energy.

Book Synopsis Human Factors in Simple and Complex Systems, Second Edition by : Robert W. Proctor
Download or read book Human Factors in Simple and Complex Systems, Second Edition written by Robert W. Proctor and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of simple and complex systems, it is a whole new world out there. At the initial publication of this book, fourteen years ago, the web was in its infancy, DVDs did not exist, cell phones were few and far between, and the information superhighway was just a blip upon the horizon. If you used the terms "social engineering," you were most likely a political scientist, and if you were "phishing" you might be listening to a rock band. The second edition of a bestseller, Human Factors in Simple and Complex Systems provides the necessary understanding of the breadth and depth of human factors issues that influence the design, implementation, and evaluation of products and systems. Emphasizing the close relationship between basic theory and application, the authors delineate a framework for the research process, present an integrated view of the current state of knowledge, and examine how these factors can be applied to system design. The new edition addresses such concepts as situation awareness and highlights topics of interest, with a special focus on computer applications and human-computer interaction. See what’s new in the Second Edition New topics, such as situational awareness, that capture the tremendous changes in human factors and ergonomics Tightly integrates basic research and application, strengthening the link between knowledge and practice Each chapter includes a separate box that discusses a topic of current interest related to human interaction with computers and recent technology Demonstrating a general approach to solving a broad range of system problems, the book provides coverage of the theoretical foundation on which the discipline of human factors is built. Structured around human information processing, it covers the full range of contemporary human factors and ergonomics, then shows you how to apply them.
Book Synopsis Manufacturing: Engineering, Management and Marketing by : M. T. Lilly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a developing country like Nigeria, the available land is plentiful but is relatively more expensive in city areas like Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. Hence, to reduce cost, land outside the cities is often sought. In Nigeria, labor is cheap per hour, but it becomes more expensive as one moves toward the cities. Nevertheless, to reduce overall costs, transportation costs should be reduced, so the site of the factory should be close to a large market for its products. In developed countries, government policies influence significantly the locations of factories. For instance, factories are set up in high-unemployment areas to comply with the national development policy for the country. In Nigeria, the sitting of a factory is often based on political rather than management considerations. Therefore, many government-owned companies exist in economically nonviable locations, for example, the refinery and the fertilizer plant at Kaduna. However, private investors prefer to start companies in their own localities. Reliable electricity supplies and an adequate transportation infrastructure are essential for most companies. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, companies too often have to provide standby generators, thereby increasing production costs. This is one of the reasons why made in Nigeria goods tend to be more expensive than the corresponding imported ones, despite far lower local labor costs. This textbook which provides desirable service to students, engineers, managers and politicians covers an extensive range of topics that includes but not limited to essentials of management, optimal maintenance of equipment, financial management, cost/benefit analysis, creative thinking, entrepreneurship, operation research, queuing theory, the factory environment, depreciation replacement theory, marketing, automation and motivation.
