Book excerpt: Why was heraldry so important to the families for whom houses were built? How does the layout of a house reveal the values of the people who lived in it? By reading the architectural features of a house - even simple items such as windows, doors, chimneys and staircases - we can learn so much about the past. Interiors, as well as exteriors, have a story to tell, with floor layouts and contents of rooms revealing much about the people who built and lived in them. We can also read the iconography of a house: its symbols and images, spanning subjects such as classical mythology, religion and British history. Heraldry too is an essential tool for understanding much of the details found in country houses, from coats of arms to crests, or fireplace decorations and ceiling bosses. Through all this, we gain a glimpse into the social world of the families who lived there - and discover that the stories of many country houses are inextricably linked by marriage, royalty or political or military service. Richly illustrated with stunning photographs from the unique archive of Country Life magazine, this book is a joy for all those who want to learn more about our heritage, art and architecture, and the essential characteristics of a classic country house.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reference guide to hundreds of surnames that reveal the story of the United Kingdom across generations and centuries. To some extent, we are all products of our family history, the many generations before us. So it is with nations. The history of Great Britain has been largely defined by powerful and influential families, many of whose names came down from Celtic, Danish, Saxon or Norman ancestors. Their family names fill the pages of history books, indelibly written into events we learn about at school. Family names like Wellington, Nelson, Shakespeare, Cromwell, Constable, De Montfort, and Montgomery reflect the long, checkered history of Britain, and demonstrate the assimilation of the many cultures and languages that have migrated to the British isles over the centuries. This book is a snapshot of several hundred such family names and delves into their beginnings and derivations, making extensive use of old sources, including translations of The Domesday Book and The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, as well as tracing many through the centuries to the present day.

This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historic houses that open to the public in England and Wales - particularly those owned by the National Trust - preserve their contents rather than restore them to a particular period. The former owners of these houses often retained objects from various periods and this layering of history produces interiors that look aged and patinated. Although the reason for this preservation and lack of fashionable renewable can be attributed to declining economic fortunes in the twentieth century, there are many examples of families practising this method of homemaking over a much longer period. Taking National Trust properties as its central focus, this book examines three interlocking themes to examine the role of historic textiles. Firstly it looks at houses with preserved contents together with the reasons for individual families choosing this lifestyle; secondly the role of the National Trust as both guardian and interpreter of these houses and their collections; and finally, and most importantly, the influence of textiles to contribute to the appearance of interiors, and their physical attributes that carry historical resonances of the past. The importance of preserved textiles in establishing the visual character of historic houses is a neglected area and therefore the prominence given to textiles in this project constitutes an original contribution to the study of these houses. Drawing upon a range of primary sources, including literature produced by the National Trust for their sites, and documentary sources for the families and their houses (such as diaries, letters and household accounts), the study takes a broad approach that will be of interest to all those with an interest in material culture, heritage, collecting studies and cultural history.

Book excerpt: The Garden of Ideas tells an inspiring and engaging story of Australian garden design. From the imaginings of emigrant garden-makers of the late eighteenth century to the concerns of twenty-first-century gardeners, this book charts its way across four centuries through a handsome and satisfying fusion of images and text. The Garden of Ideas is embellished with an unparalleled array of images - paintings, drawings, prints, plans, and photographs - each richly evocative of their time and most never previously published. Unearthed from around Australia, and many from overseas, these images carry the story of Australian garden style down the years, in the process criss-crossing social and cultural history across the wide extremes of our continent. Richard Aitken, whose book Botanical Riches was published in 2006 to popular and critical acclaim, brings a lifetime of experience to The Garden of Ideas. He achieves fresh insights and presents our passion for garden-making with wit and flair. The Garden of Ideas is a valuable source book for the sophisticated gardener and an indispensable companion for the garden lover.
