Book excerpt: "These innovative essays compel us to reevaluate our understanding of the Cold War as a predominantly political and military event. Their consideration of a broad range of cultural forms---from literature and film to glossy magazines and body-building---reminds us that the Cold War's influence on culture and its producers was as varied and complex as the Southeast Asian countries it touched. Lively and insightful, this rich collection is a valuable contribution to both Cold War studies and the modern histories of Southeast Asia."---Richard A. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been a number of significant developments of natural products for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, pain and gastro-intestinal ulcers and inflammation. The volume covers some of these novel developments of natural products which are of current and future interest as therapies for the above-mentioned conditions. Most available volumes cover a wide range of biological and technicological aspects of natural products and their discovery, some involving synthesis and properties of chemical compounds. The difference in this volume is that the natural products have a focus on their therapeutic effects on pain, arthritic and gastrointestinal diseases. Some of the natural products covered are either at the experimental stage of development while others are well-established clinically-used products. Each has its own unique place in therapy.

This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the soaring growth of global population and socioeconomy, energy consumption and demand has been rapidly rising, and coal would still remain a fundamental energy source for a long time into the future. Seeking deep coal resources becomes an inevitable trend due to the depletion of shallow coal resources. Deep mining of coal resources promotes socioeconomic development, whereas bringing a variety of security challenges. In deep underground, there is a significant risk increase in coal and rock dynamic disasters (CRDDs), owing to the changes in physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock. In this regard, it is of great importance and necessity to prevent and control CRDDs effectively and efficiently. As typical natural geological materials, coal and rock have evident inhomogeneity and anisotropy, and manifest differences in strength, deformation, permeability, and other mechanical characteristics due to their various mineral compositions, porosity, and weak structural plane. Considering the complexity of coal and rock, it is essential to carry out laboratory experiments on macroscopic mechanical responses and microscopic fracture characteristics to identify precursor information and reveal evolution mechanisms of dynamic disasters. Yet by far less is known about the combined physical and numerical simulation on multi-scale CRDDs, which hinders the development of corresponding prevention and control technologies. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global scientific and technological discussion on the cutting-edge advances of physical and numerical simulation in monitoring, early warning, and prevention of CRDDs. We welcome Original Research and Review articles addressing the following themes that include, but are not limited to: • Physical and numerical simulation on mechanisms of CRDDs • Numerical simulation on prediction of CRDDs • Numerical simulation on prevention and control of CRDDs collapse

Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of soil water deficiency on various aspects of physiological processes in plants. The book explains the effects under soil water deficit condition such as lowering of plant water content, disturbance in carbon metabolism such in photosynthesis, photorespiration and respiration as well as effects of soil water deficit on nitrogen metabolism. The book also educates the readers about, mineral nutrition under soil water deficit condition and roles of different nutrient to overcome water deficit. Changes in growth and development pattern of plant under soil water deficit condition and effects on growth and development are elaborated. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, scientists in botany and agriculture. Also the book serves as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, forestry, ecology, soil science, and environmental sciences. National and international agricultural scientists, policy makers will also find this to be a useful read. The in depth description of the major physiological issues in plants under soil water deficit that are presented in this book will help breeders tailoring crops for desirable physiological survival traits in the face of increasing soil water deficit. This book is an impactful addition to the library of any faculty members, researchers, agricultural policy planner, post graduate or student studying in plant physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and other subjects related to crop husbandry.
