Book Synopsis Rally Round the Flag--Uniforms of the Union Volunteers Of 1861 by : Ron Field
Download or read book Rally Round the Flag--Uniforms of the Union Volunteers Of 1861 written by Ron Field and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines what the citizen soldiery of the New England States wore when they marched off to save the Union in 1861. An exhaustive search of thousands of newspapers yielded a myriad of reports and personal accounts from soldiers' letters, which together offer a hitherto unpublished view of the stirring events during the first few months of the Civil War. Combined with fascinating detail from numerous diaries and regimental histories, the author is able to describe the appearance of the Union volunteers of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine. The narrative is enhanced by photographs of original uniform items from private collections, plus imagery of the day showing the great variety of clothing and headgear worn. Accepted by The Company of Military Historians, this is an essential reference for collectors, living historians, modelers, and curators, as well as anyone with a general interest in the Civil War.
Book Synopsis No Fire Next Time by : Patrick D. Joyce
Download or read book No Fire Next Time written by Patrick D. Joyce and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Black-Korean tensions result in violent clashes in Los Angeles but not in New York City? In a book based on fieldwork and on a nationwide database he constructed to track such conflicts, Patrick D. Joyce goes beyond sociological and cultural explanations. No Fire Next Time shows how political practices and urban institutions can channel racial and ethnic tensions into protest or, alternately, leave them free to erupt violently. Few encounters demonstrate this connection better than those between African Americans and Korean Americans.Cities like New York, where politics is noisy, contentious, and involves people at the grassroots, have seen extensive Black boycotts of Korean-owned businesses (usually small grocery stores). African Americans in Los Angeles have sustained few long-term boycotts of Korean American businesses—but the absence of "routine" contention there goes hand in hand with the large-scale riots of 1992 and continuous acts of individual violence. In demonstrating how conflicts between these groups were intimately tied to their political surroundings, this book yields practical lessons for the future. City governments can do little to fight widening economic inequality in an increasingly diverse nation, Joyce writes. But officials and activists can restructure political institutions to provide the foundations for new multiracial coalitions.
Book Synopsis Tombs, Temples & Ancient Art by : Joseph Lindon Smith
Download or read book Tombs, Temples & Ancient Art written by Joseph Lindon Smith and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From book cover: Tombs Temples And Ancient Art: When Joseph Lindon Smith went out to Egypt as a young artist in 1898, archaeology was beginning to uncover some of the fabled treasures of an ancient land. For the next half-century, he devoted himself to the great "finds" as they were excavated from the encroaching sands, depicting them in countless paintings for the leading museums of the world. He became the friend of Flinder Petrie, the greatest of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Egyptologists, and the co-worker of the best-known archaeologists down to 1950; he explored and painted at Petra, Persepolis, Ur Palmyra, and Baalbek; he also did work with Sylvanus Griswold Morley in the ancient Maya centers of America, and painted in the Far East. His personal account of what transpired under his eyes and of the chronology and relations of ancient art over a wide area is at once exciting narrative and important history. The many illustrations chosen from his painting provide visual accompaniment to his story of classical civilizations and reveal the literal quality of his own art, which has in notable instances preserved for us the likeness of things that have since crumbled or faded on exposure to light and air after being buried for centuries. Tombs, Temples, And Ancient Art gains strength for its informality, for while the initiated will discover facts and interpretations of high importance to science, all readers will recognize in it the work of a man alive to adventure.
