During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603), England was still a small and untested country, fighting for its place among the European nations. It was guided by strict laws and customs that dictated how a person lived, worked, and worshiped. There were even laws that determined what kind of clothes people could wear! Find out about the sometimes treacherous life in the queen's court, how the navy defeated invaders, and what kind of witch you'd visit if you were suffering from a cold. Discover how Elizabethan farming, shopping, building, bathing, and holidays compare to those of today. Life may have been a little smellier back then—but was it all that different?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces every important aspect of the Elizabethan music world. In ten scrupulously researched yet accessible chapters, Lord examines the lives of composers, the evolution of musical instruments, the Elizabethan system of musical notation, and the many textures and traditions of Elizabethan music. Biographical entries introduce the most significant and prolific composers as well as the members of royal society who influenced Elizabethan musical culture. Both familiar and obscure instruments of the era are described with focus on their musical and social contexts. Various types of music are defined and illustrated, along with an explanation of the musical notation used during this era. Chapter bibliographies, glossaries, and an index provide additional tools for both the novice and the experienced student of music and music history. When Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1558, England was undergoing tremendous upheaval. Power struggles between Protestants and Catholics shaped the English music world as musicians' livelihoods were directly linked to their religious allegiances. Music became a form of strategy within court politics, and secular music evolved through the musical and poetic influences of the Italian Renaissance. Events of the day were told and retold through music, class and social differences were sung with relish, and rituals of love and life were set to story and song. When England defeated the vaunted Spanish Armada in 1588, a victorious nation expressed its jubilance through music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the sixteenth century roman type face replaced blackletter as the standard and most widely used face in printed English books. The most widely used size of type was pica. The aim of Professor Ferguson's book is to show the reader how to identify the printers of books and also how the types of a single common size and face are differentiated. The book starts in the early 1550s, because this was when punchcutters first came to England, and it ends at 1610, for soon after that date the shops were flooded with new Dutch faces which give an entirely different appearance to later seventeenth-century printing.Professor Ferguson's clear explanations and comprehensive tables provide the reader with an invaluable tool with which to identify individual printers and the date of books by known printers, thus countering a number of problems facing the student of Elizabethan texts.Professor W. Craig Ferguson teaches at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. He is the author of 'Valentine Simmes' (1968) and articles in 'Studies in Bibliography' and 'The Library'.

This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manuscript of the Elizabethan play Sir Thomas More has intrigued scholars for over a century because three of its pages may have been written by Shakespeare. The Elizabethan Theatre and "The Book of Sir Thomas More" sets aside the timeworn question of authorship and considers the play in a new framework, one which by focusing on questions of the theatre attempts to free Elizabethan theatre history from the grip of its most famous author. Bringing to bear on the manuscript the perspective of a theatre historian and the resources of textual scholarship, Scott McMillin departs from most critical accounts, which have judged Sir Thomas More unfinished. Rather, McMillin addresses the manuscript as a coherent and finished work that achieves its intended purpose: to serve as a prompt book in the Elizabethan playhouse. His systematic analysis of the Sir Thomas More manuscript shows that the company for which it was written was unusually large, that it had a lead actor of outstanding capability, and that in its staging of the play it probably made use of visual repetition as an ironic device. He concludes that the theatre company of the period that most closely matched this description was Lord Strange's men, a company, incidentally, for which Shakespeare himself was known to have written in the early 1590s. Textual scholars, theatre historians, and students and scholars of Elizabethan drama will welcome The Elizabethan Theatre and "The Book of Sir Thomas More."
