Sell your short fiction or nonfiction to the newest markets. Anyone who publishes your compiled short stories, novels, or nonfiction is looking for more opportunities to market your work. If you have published your stories or nonfiction with a mainstream or print-on-demand publisher, that firm cooperates with online booksellers. They probably want to leverage serial rights opportunities with your short stories, articles, or nonfiction excerpts from your books. After publication, you need to drive people to online booksellers' Web sites and your own to create visibility. The revolution is in virtual book tours and online marketing with booksellers. Another hidden market is short story publishing rights' auctions online to create visibility. You sell your writing as you'd sell a product at one of the online auctions. Long before finding any publisher or after the "face-out shelf life" of your book is over, sell or pre-sell your creations online. Offer short stories or articles to the public for a small fee to download. The music and movie industry do it. So can you. Online booksellers already are famous for a targeted community of readers that buy online. That's only one hint of hidden markets for authors that want to be well-paid for short stories or brief nonfiction. Here's how to write, customize, and market precisely what these merchants want. Here's how to pose the least financial risk to them.

Download or read book H. Beam Piper written by John F. Carr and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Beam Piper is one of science fiction's most enigmatic writers. In 1946 Piper appeared seemingly from out of nowhere, already at the top of his form. He published a number of memorable short stories in the premier science fiction magazine of the time, Astounding Science Fiction, under legendary editor John W. Campbell. Piper quickly became friends with many of the top writers of the day, including Lester Del Rey, Fletcher Pratt, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp. Piper also successfully made the turn from promising short story writer to major novelist, authoring Four-Day Planet, Cosmic Computer, Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and Little Fuzzy, which was nominated for a Hugo award. Even those who counted Piper among their friends knew very little about the man or his life as a railroad yard bull in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This biography illuminates H. Beam Piper, both the writer and the man, and answers lingering questions about his death. Appendices include a number of Piper's personal papers, a complete bibliography of Piper's works, and an essay on Piper's Terro-Human Future History series.

Book Synopsis The Culture and Commerce of the American Short Story by : Andrew Levy
Download or read book The Culture and Commerce of the American Short Story written by Andrew Levy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Culture and Commerce of the Short Story is a cultural and historical account of the birth and development of the American short story from the time of Poe. It describes how America - through political movements, changes in education, magazine editorial policy and the work of certain individuals - built the short story as an image of itself and continues to use the genre as a locale within the realm of art where American political ideals can be rehearsed, debated and turned into literary forms. While the focus of this book is cultural, individual authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Edith Wharton are examined as representative of the phenomenon. As part of its project, this book also contains a history of creative writing and the workshop dating back a century. Andrew Levy makes a strong case for the centrality of the short story as a form of art in American life and provides an explanation for the genre's resurgence and ongoing success.

Book Synopsis Architectures of Occupation in the Australian Short Story by : Patrick West
Download or read book Architectures of Occupation in the Australian Short Story written by Patrick West and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrick West’s Architectures of Occupation in the Australian Short Story cultivates the potential for literary representations of architectural space to contribute to the development of a contemporary politics of Australian post-colonialism. West argues that the predominance of tropes of place within cultural and critical expressions of Australian post-colonialism should be re-balanced through attention to spatial strategies of anti-colonial power. To elaborate the raw material of such strategies, West develops interdisciplinary close readings of keynote stories within three female-authored, pan-twentieth century, Australian short-story collections: Bush Studies by Barbara Baynton (1902); Kiss on the Lips and Other Stories by Katharine Susannah Prichard (1932); and White Turtle: A Collection of Short Stories by Merlinda Bobis (1999). The capacity of the short-story form to prompt creative and politically germinal engagements with species of space associated with architecture and buildings is underscored. Relatedly, West argues that the recent resurgence of binary thought—on local, national, and international scales—occasions an approach to the short-story collections shaped by binary relationships like a dichotomy of inside and outside. Concluding his argument, West connects the literary and architectural critiques of the story collections to the wicked problem, linked to ongoing colonial violences, of improving Australian Indigenous housing outcomes. Innovative and interdisciplinary, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Literary, Architectural, and Postcolonial Studies. .
