Book Synopsis The Sting Book by : Steven K. Frazier
Download or read book The Sting Book written by Steven K. Frazier and published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STING BOOK is designed as a comprehensive law enforcement guide to setting up and running a clandestine storefront sting operation. It is designed to instruct prospective sting managers, and participants, in all facets of creating and operating a storefront sting program. The book is organized in a step-by-step format to lead the sting manager through a logical progression for developing a sting. It identifies problems that are likely to arise and offers solutions based on the real-life experiences of other sting managers including the author. What makes this book unique is that it takes a realistic approach from the point of view of someone without experience in sting programs trying to set one up for the first time. It focuses on such issues as how to sell the program to management, how to set up and install the video and sound equipment, how to locate and acquire resources for little or no cost and how to avoid the major pitfalls that have plagued past programs. The instruction is geared toward developing a simplified flexible program that will work anywhere in the country under a wide variety of conditions. The material is based on techniques that the author has developed from stings he has designed and directed as well as those developed out of over 22 sting programs conducted statewide in California and selected others from across the nation. Though these stings have occurred in a wide variety of settings, from low-cost rural stings to large-scale big-city stings, they all share common elements. These common elements, and those specific to certain kinds of stings, are examined in detail. All instruction is based on actual hands-on experience using proven methods that work.
Book Synopsis Art of Darkness by : Sara K. Schneider
Download or read book Art of Darkness written by Sara K. Schneider and published by Art of Darkness: Ingenious. This book was released on 2008 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like Scheherazade, undercover agents talk to save their lives. If they put in a poor performance, they don't see the curtain rise again. ART OF DARKNESS pries open the virtuoso identity techniques practiced by undercover operatives, fugitives, disguise artists, pranksters, con artists, and federally protected witnesses. It draws on original interviews with undercover operators in order to show how identity artists on both sides of the law obtain fake ID, develop a disguise, build a cover story, maintain believability in street performances, and deal with threats to their identities-all without formal acting training. ART OF DARKNESS inhabits the grey areas of morality as it exposes identity roleplays at the borders of lawfulness. In it you'll find stories of: law-enforcement workers who adopt the techniques of criminals in order to catch them but somehow get caught up in their own trick identities; self-defined artists whose work also has a criminal dimension; criminal informants who masterfully play sides and roles against each other; and hoaxsters and impersonators who may perform trick identities primarily for gain but do so with tremendous inventiveness and a directorial consciousness. This book may explode any remaining notion you harbor that you are not at some level a member of the intelligence community, discerning who is "for real" and who is presenting a self for personal gain.

The ninth edition reflects the changes in advancements in forensic science, practices of criminalistics, computerization, electronic databases, and the Internet while remaining focused on the fundamentals of criminal investigation to help investigators build a solid foundation of investigative skills. The presentation of material in this book is directed to the beginning student of investigation, but experienced investigators and supervisors will find this text an excellent resource.

Download or read book True to the Blue written by D. E. Gray and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. E. Gray’s first book “The Warrior In Me” was a collective memoir of his 42 year career in Law enforcement, 28 years with the Los Angeles Police Department and 14 years with the Escondido Police Department in the North San Diego County. Even though author, D. E. Gray ́s new book titled “True to the Blue” is a work of fiction, it is based in part on a true story along with actual events that the author experienced or witnessed while on the job. Many of the characters in this story are patterned after real people who have worked or crossed paths with D. E. Gray during his 42 year career as a street cop. This story begins in early 1999 and follows the hardships of Sergio Ortega; a six-year veteran of the L.A.P.D. who is assigned to the elite C.R.A.S.H. gang unit of the Operations Central Bureau. It follows Ortega’s struggle to be the best at what he does, getting the bad guys off the streets, while staying true to his badge and the blue uniform that he wears and that represents cops in every city. With the infamous L.A.P.D. Rampart scandal about to break open and Chief Bernard Parks ́ hard-line approach with his officer accountability policy, Ortega eventually discovers that being a good cop is more than he had bargained for. When he is faced with protecting the identity of an “ELA Dukes” gang member who has turned confidential informant for an LAPD Hollenbeck division detective, he finds himself in trouble with the department. His hard work and dedication to the job would destroy his marriage and alienate his friends and partners who would abandon him in his time of need. Ortega would have to dig deep into his past to come to grips with his downward spiraling life to try to salvage it from the disaster it had come to be. Given one more chance to prove himself at the San Pasqual Police Department, Ortega would find himself investigating several murders that were made to look like drug overdoses. When his neighbors discover a large drug cache hidden in some Mexican Talavera pots they purchased, Ortega is tasked with finding the drug runner who lost the drugs to incompetence. When the neighbors are later found murdered, Ortega becomes obsessed with finding the killer who he believes may have also had a hand in the string of overdose murders as well as Sergio’s own ex-wife’s murder. Staying “True To The Blue” uniform leads Sergio on a journey that culminates into an unpredictable and shocking outcome.

Download or read book Undercover written by Gary T. Marx and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the most comprehensive and thoughtful work ever done on undercover policing. It will be the benchmark by which all further scholarship in this area will be judged."—Jerome Skolnick, University of California, Berkeley, School of Law "If you believe in undercover tactics, this book will warn you. If you are opposed to covert activities by the police, this excellent study will force you to rethink your position. . . . Undercover is indispensable for anyone who wants to understand the threat, but also the usefulness, of surveillance by law enforcement officials."—R. Drinan, Georgetown University "Gary Marx's book is one of the best of the rare species, thoughtful and analytic books about police surveillance. He has a thousand stories, most of them current . . . and he makes a solid study out of them. He has written a sociological map for surveillance, giving it a structure that it has never before had."—P. Chevigny, New York University "This is the best single treatment of the problem of undercover investigations in our literature. Gary Marx writes not only with erudition and sensitivity, he is a very sensible man as well. He has mastered a vast amount of detail while not losing sight of the big picture. I cannot praise this book too highly."—J. Kaplan, Stanford University "A tour de force on a very difficult subject. . . . This is an important, needed, well-executed book. It will be widely read and used."—D. Bayley, State University of New York, Albany "A remarkable success at weaving legal and sociological factors in an otherwise controversial and seemingly irreconcilable interplay of disciplines."—J. Wilczynski, Prosecutor's Brief "A wonderful book!"—Professor Arthur Miller, C-NBC Live "Deserves a wide audience beyond practitioners and scholars."—A. Bouza, Chief of Police, Minneapolis
Book Synopsis Advances in Research on Illicit Networks by : Martin Bouchard
Download or read book Advances in Research on Illicit Networks written by Martin Bouchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social network analysis finally reached a critical mass of scholars in the field of criminology. The proven track record of network theory and methods in fostering new advances in our understanding of crimes and criminals has extended the web of researchers willing to integrate this approach to their work. It is more than just a fad – once you adopt a network approach, it almost inevitably becomes the main lens through which you see crime. The insights learned from analysing matrices of relations among offenders, from exploiting the interdependence among actors instead of finding ways to avoid it are simply too great to ignore. This book provides a state of the art assessment into network research currently being conducted in criminology and beyond, pushing the field further in multiple ways. A series of contributions tackle themes and offending types that had yet to be previously empirically investigated, including political conspiracies, steroid distribution, methamphetamine production, illicit marketplaces on the Internet, and small arms trafficking. Advances are also found in the data sources used to extract illicit networks, and the methods used to analyse them. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Crime.
