Book excerpt: First published in 1971, The Country of Marriage is Wendell Berry's fifth volume of poetry. What he calls "an expansive metaphor" is "a farmer's relationship to his land as the basic and central relation of humanity to creation." "Similarly, marriage is the basic and central community tie; it begins and stands for the relation we have to family and to the larger circles of human association. And these relationships are in turn basic to, and may stand for, our relationship to God and to the sustaining mysteries and powers of creation." Each of the thirty–five poems in this collection is concerned with this metaphor. The long sequence that is itself entitled "The Country of Marriage," perhaps the finest single work in the book, is a grave, moving, and beautifully wrought love poem. But the shorter lyrics have an equal grace and beauty—writing that contains the exhilarating lucidity of mountain spring water. And there are most notably, several more poems about the "Mad Farmer," who advises us here to 'every day do something that won't compute.' Berry has here perfected a work that is immediately accessible but that becomes, as we read it again, always more satisfying, reverberant with manifold meanings.

Book excerpt: A masterful work by a master poet, this brilliant summation of poetry and human nature will speak to all readers who long to place poetry in their lives. How to Read a Poem is an unprecedented exploration of poetry and feeling. In language at once acute and emotional, National Book Critics Circle award-winning distinguished poet and critic Edward Hirsch describes why poetry matters and how we can open up our imaginations so that its message can make a difference. In a marvelous reading of verse from around the world, including work by Pablo Neruda, Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens, and Sylvia Plath, among many others, Hirsch discovers the true meaning of their words and ideas and brings their sublime message home into our hearts. "The answer Hirsch gives to the question of how to read as poem is: Ecstatically."—Boston Book Review

Book excerpt: "If poetry is a tantalizing invitation - into the world the poem conjures, the interior life of the poet, our own interior lives - then How to Read a Poem ... and Start a Poetry Circle is a means of accepting that invitation. In gathering a potent group of poems she calls her "talismans" into this slender volume, Molly Peacock presents us with a book of ways to explore the romance we have with words we can't quite hold." "Like a friend, she introduces us to her friends; she shows us how to form poetry circles of our own to share our private pleasures within the rounded borders of a communal reading group. Finally, Peacock provides us with the recommendations of fellow poets with which to begin our own poetry-reading experience - and the rich, enthralling, and endlessly rewarding search for talismans of our own."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public and Parlor Readings: Prose and Poetry for the Use of Reading Clubs In my position as teacher of elocution, I have been the recipient of numerous letters from amateur Readers, members of literary clubs, and others, asking me to name some piece appropriate to a given occasion. Teachers have desired choice readings for school exhibitions. My own public entertainments have been followed by verbal or written requests for copies of selections which excited the interest of hearers. Such appeals were usually for pieces which were not common or familiar, and of which I possessed perhaps but a manuscript copy. I was therefore put to the task of transcribing the desired pieces over and over again, 0 or forced to the ungracious duty of denying the very proper request, for want of time to comply with it. These solicitations were very frequently accompanied by offers of compensation; but manifestly no price could be set on what - though costing much time and trouble when so multiplied was in any individual case a mere courtesy. I was led, therefore, to think that a book made up in the main of selections which had proved entertaining to public audiences, or literary or social circles, might be acceptable to the public at large. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid competing claims about who first developed the theories and practices that became known as New Criticism - the critical method that rose alongside Modernism - literary historians have generally given the lion's share of credit to William Empson and I.A. Richards. In The Birth of New Criticism Donald Childs challenges this consensus and provides a new and authoritative narrative of the movement's origins. At the centre stand Robert Graves and Laura Riding, two poet-critics who have been written out of the history of New Criticism. Childs brings to light the long-forgotten early criticism of Graves to detail the ways in which his interpretive methods and ideas evolved into the practice of "close reading," demonstrating that Graves played such a fundamental part in forming both Empson's and Richards's critical thinking that the story of twentieth-century literary criticism must be re-evaluated and re-told. Childs also examines the important influence that Riding's work had on Graves, Empson, and Richards, establishing the importance of this long-neglected thinker and critic. A provocative and cogently argued work, The Birth of New Criticism is both an important intellectual history of the movement and a sharply observed account of the cultural politics of its beginnings and legacy.
