Book excerpt: This book is an invitation to join Jesus in an exciting journey of financial discipleship. A disciple is a person who has an ongoing, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ and who gladly shares what he or she has learned with others. Financial discipleship is so important because what we do with our money reflects our heart's priorities. Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart shall be also." A financial disciple has a clear vision, to see every follower of Christ in every nation faithfully living by God's financial principles in every area of their lives, both personally and in their work, family and community. He or she desires to know Christ more intimately, to be free to serve, and to help fund the work of the church. Join us in the journey of financial discipleship!

Book excerpt: Jesus depended on the Holy Spirit. Jesus was born by the Spirit, filled by the Spirit, led by the Spirit, empowered by the Spirit, and offered Himself as a sacrifice on the cross by the eternal Spirit. Then at His ascension, He prayed to the Father that His followers would have the same power available to them. However, as modern believers, we have worked very hard to minimize our dependence on the Holy Spirit. In Spirit-Filled Jesus, Vladimir Savchuk presents the life of Jesus as an example for us to follow into living an abundant life full of the Holy Spirit and His power. We are called to pick up our cross and follow Him, but we can't do that unless we rely on the Holy Spirit the same way He did. Find out more in Spirit-Filled Jesus! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-selling author Andrew Wommack shares his personal story of when he was young and strapped financially. God taught him how to have abundance in the area of finances. Andrew discusses the influence of money in our lives and how it is very real. He teaches that Jesus taught more about managing resources than He did on prayer or even faith. He exposes the manipulation that sometimes goes on with Christian ministers and how you can be immune from it. Andrew Wommack's message is clear that even though there are abuses in the body of Christ regarding money, that you can still benefit from the truths in God s Word about finances. He believes that by fixing your heart that you deal with the root cause of financial situations and then money will take care of itself. Once your heart is right, using wisdom in how you spend your money comes naturally.

Book excerpt: Henry Duncan was a man of many parts: parish minister, savings bank founder, political lobbyist, anti-slavery campaigner, educator, geologist, poet, author. He restored the Ruthwell Cross, a medieval monument of international importance. He also played a major role in the Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843 – the most significant social event in nineteenth-century Scotland. But his lasting legacy is as founder of the worldwide savings bank movement. He first opened a parish bank in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, in 1810, to encourage the 'industrious poor' to save for times of hardship. It was run by local voluntary trustees, and the idea spread to become the basis of trustee savings banks across the world. Duncan was a product of the Enlightenment and his Christian faith. While these were often uneasy bedfellows, he found ways to reconcile them by addressing the economic and social problems of his parishioners as well as their spiritual needs. A man of vision and compassion, Duncan believed fundamentally in the dignity of ordinary working people. From its beginnings in a small cottage on the shores of the Solway, his community savings bank went on to influence and inspire generations all over the world.

A personal and vocational memoir, Will Willimon’s Accidental Preacher portrays the adventure of a life caught up in the purposes of a God who calls unlikely people to engage in work greater than themselves. Beginning with his childhood in a segregated South and moving through his student years, Willimon gives candid, inspiring, and humorous testimony to his experiences as a seminary professor, rural pastor, globe-trotting preacher, bishop, and popular theologian and writer. Above all, he shows how God has constantly had a call on his life. By turns poignant, hilarious, and thought-provoking—but always irresistibly engaging—Accidental Preacher is sure to join the well-remembered, classic memoir of our time.

Book excerpt: The Ministry of Justice delivers its services through a wide range of arm's length bodies and agencies, including the courts, prisons and probation services. The Ministry's Spending Review settlement requires a 23% reduction to its resource budget over the next four years. The Ministry has a range of financial management processes in place but lacks a consistent approach across its business, and to date it has not integrated financial management into its policy and operational workings. The Ministry needs to implement its Spending Review settlement on the basis of a full understanding of the cost and value of its services, so that financial cuts are best targeted to minimise the impact on frontline services. The Ministry and its arm's length bodies currently lack the detailed information they would need to do this. A comprehensive understanding of the costs and value of services must be a priority. For its arm's length bodies, having a clear direction, the details of which are formally agreed by both parties, is essential as is strong leadership and a shared sense of purpose. The Ministry now needs to oversee the performance of its arm's length bodies, such as framework documents, operational reviews, and accountability meetings. Fee recovery and fines collection have to be priority areas for improvement and the need to improve recovery rates where it does not currently recover the full cost of services provided. On fines collection, there was little sign of the sustained improvement promised when the Committee last took evidence in 2006.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how women in Guinea articulate themselves politically within and outside institutional politics. It documents the everyday practices that local female actors adopt to deal with the continuous economic, political, and social insecurities that emerge in times of political transformations. Carole Ammann argues that women’s political articulations in Muslim Guinea do not primarily take place within women’s associations or institutional politics such as political parties; but instead women’s silent forms of politics manifest in their daily agency, that is, when they make a living, study, marry, meet friends, raise their children, and do household chores. The book also analyses the relationship between the female population and the local authorities, and discusses when and why women’s claim making enjoys legitimacy in the eyes of other men and women, as well as representatives of ‘traditional’ authorities and the local government. Paying particular attention to intersectional perspectives, this book will be of interest to scholars of African studies, social anthropology, political anthropology, the anthropology of gender, urban anthropology, gender studies, and Islamic studies.
